“Bring your own tent, there’s no running water, no electricity, neither gym nor swimming pool, but a river for swimming, goats for milk and cheese; an exciting vegetable garden’the West Coast’s first, yielding a generous harvest.” At best, this sounds like some kind of ecotourist destination, certainly not Rancho La Puerta, the fitness spa spread out over 3,000 acres just across the San Diego border in Tecate, Mexico, known for the most benign year-round climate in North America. It’s precisely these hardscrub, modest beginnings described in the resort’s early brochure, however, that to this day, 60 years later, make Rancho La Puerta different from other spas. The “ranch” began as a hastily assembled health camp in the summer of 1940, the brainchild of Edmond Szekely, a scholar/philosopher nurturist, and his wife, Deborah, both of whom espoused the organic food and healthful lifestyle that is preached today. Guests followed a vegetarian diet, hiked up nearby Mt. Kuchumaa and followed an exercise regime, including Hatha yoga, which was considered quite odd at that time. Szekely was known as a charismatic speaker and purveyor of the Essene philosophy, which advocates natural healing and organic food production. Although these days guests sleep in ground-level private cottages, each with its own adjacent garden patio, the essence of the Szekely spirit, which emphasizes exercise and beauty, carries on. And Deborah, still vital at 84, gives presentations, which was part exhortation, part inspiration and totally mesmerizing. Visitors are encouraged to stay a full week, Saturday to Saturday. While for me, it was an easy three-hour drive from Los Angeles, guests come from all over the United States. The ranch provides a shuttle service from the San Diego airport. I arrived Saturday afternoon in February, a cool spell at the ranch. The ranch buildings, which include a great dining hall, administration, health centers, fitness gyms and swimming pools, are nestled within a variety of native vegetation as well as Mexican, Mediterranean, Australian, South African and cottage garden species. If you like to walk, birdwatch or just sit and absorb the color and fragrances, this is heaven. The week is full-packed, offering a balance between fitness’Pilates, stretching, cardio cycling, weights, water works’and renewal’yoga, labyrinth, meditation and tai chi. Every day, there are different classes, every hour on the hour. I started my first day with the 3.5-mile hike up the foothills of Mt. Kuchumaa, that great granite mountain the Kumeyaay Indians called the “exalted high place.” I like to hike, so I began each day with a different hike. One morning, I joined a group on the Mountain Breakfast Hike, a 7-mile trek through the rolling meadows and chaparral to Rancho Tres Estrellas, the 6-acre organic farm that serves the Rancho’s kitchen. After breakfast, we walked through the rows of leafy greens and winter vegetables, and then ventured into the green house, where the lettuce seedlings are nurtured. After my morning hike, I joined the other guests for breakfast in the lodge, where all meals are served. I loved the food, which is billed as ovo-lacto vegetarian that also includes fish five to six times a week for dinner and several times for lunch. For those who would like second helpings, more fats or alternate entrees, that’s possible, although red meat, pork and chicken are verboten. My week was mellow and fun. I focused on activities that I don’t normally do, so one day it was salsa, the next, a striptease dance, taught by Demetreous, whose warm, charismatic nature creates a supportive, noncompetitive environment. I learned the sexy moves of a burlesque act, even practiced removing a flowing scarf to musical accompaniment. The other side of my brain craves the quiet of this pace. If you’re not accustomed to the contemplative, there are a number of ways you can access that inner quiet. One day at noon, before lunch, I participated in a group meditation in the beautiful Milagro Meditation Loft that looks out towards the big mountain. Our guide, Sarah Bell, who also teaches yoga at the ranch, offered us a number of comfortable seating possibilities’crossed leg on a pillow or rolled up blanket, or sitting in a chair. She briefly discussed the technique and then asked us to close our eyes and concentrate on our breathing. A half-hour later, we emerged feeling refreshed and centered. My last evening I participated in a quiet meditation dinner. This was a surprisingly rich experience and a perfect antidote for my feelings of sadness over going home. Ten guests sat around a U-shaped table in a lovely, intimate dining room. The hostess explained how the dinner would proceed in silence and offered observations on the benefits of experiencing a meal slowly, quietly, reverentially. We were served in courses’soup, salad, fish, dessert’each quietly presented by the waiters. If we needed something’water, salt, lemon, bread’we signaled another guest. You begin to enjoy the presentation, texture and flavors that pass before you. After we broke our silence we talked about the experience. It’s worth thinking about every once in a while as we race through our daily meals. I have to say a word about the spa. The amenities are beautiful. There are separate facilities for men and women, which include treatments of all kinds, plus massage and even a hair salon. I had a loofah scrub, which left me feeling like a new baby. Later, I enjoyed a Jacuzzi up on the roof as the evening was coming on. There was even a full moon rising. After all is said and done, the highlight for me at Rancho La Puerta was the camaraderie. I met a most interesting group of people. There were men and women from all over the country. I fell in with a group from the East Coast’Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York City. We met early on and liked one another, so often rendezvoused at lunch or dinner. Sometimes we’d find one another at one activity or another, or enjoy anevening program together. It’s the closest thing to summer camp I’ve experienced in a long time. Really fun. It’s not often that you go on vacation and find such a relaxed, healthy bunch of people. But, why not? Mildred “Tex” Elman, Screenwriter, Teacher
Mildred “Tex” Elman, a 46-year resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away on May 10 at UCLA-Santa Monica Hospital, of multiple organ failure. She was 85. Born January 18, 1921, in Houston, Texas, Elman was the co-head writer of the daytime television serials “General Hospital” and “Search for Tomorrow” in the 1980s. In addition, she wrote scripts for television series “The Eleventh Hour,” “The Brothers Brannagan,” “True Story,” “The Verdict Is Yours,” and the screenplay for the Israeli feature film “Redemption.” She was also an English instructor at Santa Monica College. Elman is survived by her husband of 60 years, Irving Elman, a writer-producer for stage, screen and television, and a book author; sons Jeffrey, a professor of cognitive science at UC San Diego, and Corey, a ceramic designer residing in Long Beach; grandchildren Emily and Jeremy; and sister Ava Jean Mears of Houston. Tex Elman was funny, irreverent, talented, smart, loving, and beloved. She will be missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions to animal care organizations would be preferred.
Aileen Pagen, 84, A ‘Rosie Riveter’
Aileen Pagen, a former longtime Pacific Palisades resident, volunteer and sailor, passed away on April 27 in Bend, Oregon. She was 84. Born in San Francisco on May 20, 1921, Aileen moved with her family to Southern California. She graduated from Dorsey High School, worked as a hairdresser, and was a riveter for C54’s at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica during World War II. She was known as a ‘Rosie the Riveter’ and as a person who replaced rivets that had been installed improperly. Aileen married Bill Pagen on February 22, 1946. While Bill was busy with work, she was responsible for raising their three children and did a fantastic job. They lived in the Palisades for 31 years, from 1973 to 2004, residing on Amalfi, Napoli and finally Pampas Ricas. A member of the California Yacht Club, Aileen volunteered many hours with race committee work for both power and sailboat regattas over the years. Beginning in 1982, she was a dedicated volunteer at the Palisades Woman’s Club, Palisades Garden Club, Assistance League of Santa Monica, and the Women’s Republican Committee. She had a special spot in her heart and donated to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, American Cancer Society, Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Alzheimer’s Association, Heart and Lung Association, Easter Seals, Humane Society, American Red Cross, Shriner’s Hospital for Children and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. For the last two years, she lived with her son Bob Pagen and his wife Karen, in Bend, where she was laid to rest. In addition to Bob, she is survived by her daughter, Patti Smith (husband Eric) of Gardnerville, Nevada; son John Pagen (wife Tami) of Gardnerville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bill Beckstrom. The Pacific Palisades Community Council last Thursday presented Golden Sparkplugs to four individuals who were described as “shining examples of volunteerism” at a banquet in the American Legion Hall. More than 110 people showed up for the festivities, which were successfully organized for the first time by Community Council chairman Kurt Toppel and his wife, Haldis, in the absence of a Citizen of the Year dinner hosted annually by the Palisadian-Post. ‘Citizen’ judges declined giving an award this year. Toppel read the personal accomplishment for each winner, and they received fancy proclamations from five government representatives: County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky; City Councilman Bill Rosendahl; Mayor Villaraigosa’s Westside deputy, John Brady; State Senator Sheila Kuhl’s deputy Laurie Newman; and Assembywoman Fran Pavley’s deputy, Louise Rishoff: STEVE LANTZ: “Your leadership kept the Los Angeles Department of Transportation from canceling the Commuter Express Route 430. At each step in the long process you energized your fellow bus riders to challenge the cancellation decision and you wrote strong and convincing letters to DOT and the City Councilwoman’s ffice arguing the need for continued express bus service for commuters from Pacific Palisades and Brentwood to downtown Los Angeles. When the bus service and reliability deteriorated, you paved the way for the riders to regularly report the service problems to the City and its contractor. Your tireless efforts convinced the Community Council as well as the Councilman-elect and the Mayor-elect to intervene with the City’s Transportation Committee in order to implement the community-suggested route-changes on a trial basis. Ridership increased immediately and significantly. You contacted all the organizations, researched the need for volunteer help, and published their needs and contact numbers on your Web site. In addition, you made presentations to service organizations, churches, and schools in the Palisades, explaining the project and soliciting volunteers. Last year, over 200 volunteers signed up during Volunteer Week and contributed over 1,000 hours. You solicited, coordinated and received assistance, contributions and services from many diverse organizations and individuals in the Palisades to make Movies in the Park a reality. On its debut night in July 2004, more than 400 local residents gathered and watched “E.T.” on a 15-by-20 -foot screen at the Recreation Center’s Field of Dreams. Patti Page Is Parade’s Grand Marshal
She dominated pop and country music charts in the 1950s and was the first major crossover artist to popularize country music to a mainstream audience. She was the first female vocalist to be signed to Mercury Records. She was the only singing star to ever have her own TV series on all three major networks. And now, music legend Patti Page will ride in this year’s Pacific Palisades Fourth of July Parade as the Grand Marshal. Many know Page as “The Singing Rage,” who rose to fame in the late 1940s and the 1950s with such hits as “(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window,” “Old Cape Cod” and “With My Eyes Wide Open, I’m Dreaming.” Her recording of “Tennessee Waltz” is one of the highest-selling singles ever recorded by a woman and was No. 1 on pop, country and R&B lists. Page’s music career began when she was just a teenager growing up in Claremore, Oklahoma, where she was born Clara Ann Fowler in November 1927. She was working after school in the art department at KTLU Radio in Tulsa when the girl who was Patti Page on the “Meet the Patti Page Show,” sponsored by the Page Milk Company, left to seek a career outside Oklahoma. As the story goes, a station executive who had heard Clara Ann sing at a high school function suggested that she become the “new” Patti Page. With a new name and the help of touring band manager Jack Rael, Page was signed to the fledgling Mercury Records, which released her first hit, “Confess,” in 1948. This song, in which Page sings her own harmony vocals, also made her a pioneer in the field of overdubbing, or using multiple voice techniques. Page’s first million-selling record was “With My Eyes Wide Open I’m Dreaming,” followed by “All My Love,” but it was “Tennessee Waltz” (now one of Tennessee’s official state songs) that made her famous. Her smooth Southern voice and high-cheek-boned beauty also made Page a frequent guest star on the leading variety shows. Page has sold more than 100 million records, making her one of the top female recording artists in history. She has 15 gold records, and still performs concerts throughout the country. Incoming Honorary Mayor Gavin MacLeod told the Palisadian-Post this week, “I saw Patti in a concert in Escondido last year, and she sounds as good as ever. Close your eyes and it’s like being 20 again. When you hear her songs, you’re hearing memories of your life.” Page and her husband, Jerry Feliciotto, live in Solana Beach (north of San Diego) and run a business in New Hampshire manufacturing Patti Page Pancake Mix and Maple Syrup.
Greentree Plaintiffs Sue Building & Safety Dept.
The plaintiffs in the Mehr and Vickey Beglari case filed suit in Superior Court yesterday against both the couple and the City of Los Angeles and its Department of Building and Safety for failure to comply with a Court of Appeal order issued in April 2005. The court had called for the building permits and certificate of occupancy to be revoked, as well as a portion of the residence at 909 Greentree Rd. to be demolished. The plaintiffs who have spent more than five years and close to $500,000 to force the Beglaris and the City to obey the law. Charging all three parties with engaging in a “subterfuge,” the plaintiffs are questioning why it took Building and Safety nine months to finally order the Beglaris to comply. At the center of the dispute was how the setback for their house at the corner of Greentree and Brooktree in Rustic Canyon had been originally measured. The solution was to change the prevailing setback for the street, which consists of four residences. In July, Building and Safety agreed to allow the Beglaris to build a simple wooden addition or “canopy” in front of the house they own two doors down at 921 Greentree, thereby achieving the goal of altering the prevailing setback. “It took respondents nine months to issue its one-page order to comply and then only seven days after Beglari’s application to undo it,” the plaintiffs stipulate in the filing. “It is impossible to review these facts without coming to the conclusion that respondents and Beglari engaged in a willful scheme…to violate a binding decision by the Court of Appeal.” Last week, the Beglaris demolished the canopy and the house at 921 Greentree. English Beat to Play at Rec Center May 20

“We’re doing a concert designed with kids and babysitters in mind,” joked Palisadian David Wakeling about his benefit concert with The English Beat at the Palisades Recreation Center this Saturday, May 20 at 7 p.m. All ages are invited. Many parents may be surprised to know that the dad who coached a team in last winter’s youth basketball league at the park is actually a major rock star. When park director David Gadelha explained that he needed $15,000 to build a new a handball court, Wakeling offered to help by playing a concert. Since The English Beat is playing 70 concerts between now and September, a logistical problem was finding a date when Wakeling’s band would be in town. “That’s one of the great by-products of this job,” he says. “I’ve been all over the United States and in countries all over the world.” Wakeling is the original lead singer and songwriter for The English Beat, a popular British rock band that originally broke up in 1983, but has since regrouped around Wakeling. HIs band was famous in the ’80s for such hits as “I Just Can’t Stop It” and “Special Beat Service,” and he’s amazed that another of their hits, “Save It For Later,” has been used as background music for everything from a barn raising in a Woody Harrelson movie to an HBO special about the Gulf War as bombs explode. The English Beat is famous for creating a hybrid of pop, punk and reggae. The music has a good dance beat that kids can move to. “This music is really popular at the moment,” Wakeling says. “The 80’s have become the new ’60s.” He explains that ’60s music is considered the standard of rock music, but younger listeners have discovered the music of the ’80s and are making it their own. Currently, his singles are played on all the classic rock radio stations. Of music from the ’80s, The Beat’s music in particular is not dated and Wakeling is quick to credit the producer, Bob Sergeant. “He wouldn’t let us use ‘gizmos” everything had to be classic, classic drums, pianos and amps.” Wakeling started playing guitar in Birmingham, England, when he was 12. “I kept it to myself for a long time,” he says. “I’m ambidextrous and I taught myself, which means I learned how to play a guitar upside down and back to front. I made up my own chords, which gave me an original sound.” He credits Van Morrison as an influence as well as Bob Marley and The Clash. His first guitar is now on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. “It went from an instrument to an artifact,” Wakeling muses. “Now if I ever touch it again, I have to put on a pair of gloves.” He writes his own songs. “It’s ever so lucky’ they write themselves. You get really excited or really upset and it just pulls out of you. It all splurges out, even in the shower, and sometimes you have to say it over and over so you can remember it. The job is to put yourself in the way so you can catch it.” Wakeling said that Saturday’s concert will feature “loads of old hits and a handful of new ones. It’s a delicate balance because people come to reminisce, but you have to enjoy songs in the moment. They can’t all be in the past.” He hopes that this concert will be the start of something that could mobilize and utilize the enormous talent of all the Grammy and Oscar winners who live in the Palisades, to help benefit the community. “After 9/11, the destruction of the Twin Towers helped us realize that the simple pleasures become all the more valuable. There are true family and community values in the Palisades and one of the places my family enjoys them is at the park. It’s one of the things we enjoy most in the Palisades.” Wakeling, his wife, son and daughter live in the Palisades. Three years ago, he did a benefit concert for Marquez Elementary School, where his children were attending, and asked the crossing guard at the school, Dane Calcote, to play with the band. Wakeling is hoping he can get Calcote, whom he calls a “marvelous percussionist,” to once again play with his band on Saturday. Concert tickets can be purchased (by check only) at the Rec Center front office, between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow and until 5 p.m. on Saturday ($25 for adults, $15 for kids under 16).
Her Tropical Classroom
“Ia orana!” That’s “hello” in Tahitian, and how Jeanette Mills begins e-mails she sends to her family and friends from Moorea in French Polynesia. Jeanette, 21, is on the island just west of Tahiti, with a group of 24 UCLA students for their Marine Biology Quarter (MBQ), a two-month-long field program in marine biology. Actually, she’s a dance major with a passion for marine science who grew up in the Palisades and trained at Emily Kay’s Fancy Feet Dance Studio for 12 years. She was a lead dancer in Palisades High’s spring musicals throughout high school. Though she has chosen to concentrate in dance through the World Arts and Cultures (WAC) department at UCLA, she continues to take marine biology classes and was the only non-science major accepted to the MBQ program, which is held alternating years in Bodega Bay, California, Hawaii and Moorea. In the weeks before her departure for Moorea, Jeanette attended preparatory lectures and seminars during the day and, at night, rehearsed for WAC Smash, the annual student-choreographed, student-performed showcase of the WAC department. The week after her performance, she left her tap shoes behind and boarded a plane destined for the Polynesian islands. Jeanette arrived in Tahiti on April 15 and took a ferry to Moorea, where the students, along with four professors and three teaching assistants, stay at the UC Berkeley Gump Research Station on Cook’s Bay. On April 17, she began writing e-mails back home to update everybody on her adventures and to keep as a journal for herself. First, a little bit about the research station: It’s right on the water, with beautiful views of the bay and the mountains. Basically, there is a student dorm that I live in, a wet lab, a dry lab, a library, dive lockers, and a traditional Tahitian meeting hut, complete with hammock, a dog named Chicken and a cat we call Turkey. A friendly housekeeping staff prepares our meals, which so far have been pretty good. Baguettes with every meal (this is part of France, after all). The staff here are mostly Polynesians, and they don’t speak much English, only French and Tahitian, but that doesn’t matter when they are demolishing us on the volleyball court. (I don’t play’haha, funny’but I watch.) On Monday morning we went on our first scuba dive, on the outer reef just off the bay. It was beautiful, a spur and groove area just beyond the reef crest. I love tropical water! Thin wet suit, only 8 lbs. on my weight belt, and 45 minutes in the water without getting the slightest bit chilled. The reef here is so healthy. It’s gonna be great doing research here. Moorea is a triangular island encircled by a lagoon and the reefs of the Polynesian sea. The students’ first two weeks on the island were exploratory, as they visited different sites, went snorkeling and grew accustomed to the marine life and island lifestyle. Jeanette quickly discovered the difficulty of conducting marine research in areas with strong currents, where you have to “concentrate on not getting bumped into coral or urchins.” The students completed a class project dealing with water flow and sedimentation before starting their first of two research projects. They’re testing the effects of light on demersal zooplankton (plankton that emerges out of the sediment at night and returns during the day) and how plankton emergence is related to substrate type and light vs. dark. Jeanette joked that their traps “are super high-tech, made from plastic Coke bottles and glow sticks,” but they work. “We set out a couple right on the reef in front of the station and went back to collect them a couple hours later, and they had caught a bunch of little critters, which we will be counting and sorting in the lab.” A week into the project, Jeanette wrote: After some preliminary test runs, during which we discovered lots of little problems, we’ve made a few slight adjustments to our trap design and project plan, and now we’re underway collecting data which we hope will be legit and sufficient. It’s so exciting to realize that we’re actually doing real research, doing things no one has done before and, hopefully, finding out things that no one has found out before. Even though it may seem like we’re just cutting up plastic bottles or sticking spikes in the sediment or tying Styrofoam floats to orange flags, this is real science. Even if we have to chug a 1.5L bottle of Coke in one sitting just so we have enough bottles, it’s all in the name of science. Even if I have to wade through urchin-infested waters alone at night to retrieve the plankton traps and hope that I don’t misstep or fall while I’m holding a flashlight between my legs and simultaneously trying to pick up the trap carefully so that nothing spills out, it’s exciting because we’re out here doing real things with unknown results and that’s so much more interesting than reading a book about what other people have already found out. In a separate e-mail to the Palisadian-Post, Jeanette said that she hopes to gain a better understanding of what being a field biologist entails. “So far, I’m mostly learning what it would be like to be a plankton biologist, which is probably not what I would want to pursue as a career, but it is a valuable and rewarding experience nonetheless. Even if I end up doing something unrelated, like photography or teaching dance, I will always be able to say that I did marine biology research in Moorea. (But I can’t imagine myself not doing something that is somehow related to marine science.)” Of course, Jeanette found the opportunity to dance during a Tahitian feast and party. The Polynesian housekeeping staff and their families helped cook the food, which included taro (a tropical plant), breadfruit, sweet potato, plantains, pork cooked in the ground, poi (a Polynesian staple food made from taro), a soupy chicken dish, a yogurt-like coconut dipping sauce and strong fermented raw fish. After dinner, the fun began: …Some of the Polynesians blasted some Tahitian music from the trunk of their BMW and, as soon as I heard the drumming, I was there. I had been itching to do some Tahitian dancing for two weeks, especially every time I hear drumming coming from across the bay in some live hotel show that I can’t see. A couple of the kids showed us some Tahitian dancing and then we were invited to join in. So I did, and I tried to remember as much as I could from my Polynesian dance classes [at UCLA]. When I get back home, I’m starting class again’. There was one little boy who kept running into the middle of the circle and busting some Tahitian men’s dance moves, and I went and did the women’s counterpart, and everyone laughed and it was great. Then one of the Polynesian women started doing a hula when a particular song came on, and at first I kind of followed along from the side’Because it was a hula, and quite a bit slower than the Tahitian drum dancing, it was pretty easy for me to follow along, and it was so great to be dancing hula again. While dancing is a great release from marine biology research, so is a little dose of city life. Last week, Jeanette took a break from sorting and counting plankton samples to take a ferry ride to Tahiti. The downtown area is really nice, with a combination of quaint Tahitian shops and familiar brand-name stores like Quicksilver, Billabong and, of course, McDonald’s, which made us feel a bit more at home. (What’s a big metropolitan area without the golden arches?) There is also a great, two-story open-air marketplace where we spent a long time admiring fruits, veggies, meat, fish, perfumes, vanilla beans, woven baskets, carved necklaces, black pearls, pareos [sarongs] and endless other Tahitian handicrafts and jewelry. I bought a carved shell necklace and a beautiful tan pareo with two Tahitian dancers and a drummer dyed in brown. After we had our fill of shopping, the four of us sat on a stone wall on the side of the street, just watching the cars and people pass by, breathing in the exhaust fumes, feeling at home. Usually you hear people talk about taking a break from civilization and going somewhere remote to relax, but for me it was the opposite. I needed a good dose of citification. Having just reached the halfway point of her program, Jeanette still feels that she has quite a bit of studying and research to do. She also admits she has “mixed feelings” about the thought of the program ending: “On the one hand, I’m excited to go home and to dance class again, to go to Disneyland and drink real milk and not feel dirty all the time. On the other hand, I know I’ll miss this place like crazy and have major culture shock and withdrawal when I come home.” She plans to update the Palisades community on her experiences after she returns home on June 10.
