The leadership at Palisades Charter High School will undergo a major transition with the departure of three administrators and the possible addition of a new principal this fall. Margaret Evans, director of admissions and attendance, and Charlotte Atlas director of compliance, discipline and facilities, have decided to retire. Director of Instruction Lauren Allen, who has worked at the school this year as the director of instruction, will also be leaving. Tuesday evening, the PaliHi governing board voted to offer the principal post to Martin Griffin, who currently works for the Escondido Union High School District. He would replace Marcia Haskin, who came out of retirement last year to fill the position. As of presstime, Griffin had not yet accepted the job (see story, page 4). ‘I have enjoyed my time here,’ Evans told the Palisadian-Post. ‘I used to wear a button that said ‘I love my job.” Evans has spent the past 12 years at PaliHi and 32 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Atlas has worked for the high school for eight years. The search for their replacements has begun, said Colleen McCarthy, human resources director. ‘We are trying to fill the positions as soon as possible,’ said Rene Rodman, board chair. Executive Director Amy Dresser-Held, who is in her third year and on maternity leave, will be able to provide stability this fall, Rodman said. Haskin has also agreed to stay-on as either the principal or as a part-time advisor to the new principal. ‘We are really appreciative of everyone’s contributions to date,’ Rodman said. School officials have decided to reallocate Atlas’ and Evans’ job duties. The new positions will now be called the director of student services and the manager of operations. The director of student services will report to the principal and be in charge of tasks such as attendance, admissions, discipline and student activities. The manager of operations will report to the executive director and oversee operations such as technology, parking and transportation. ‘We had some duel reporting situations,’ Rodman said. ‘We wanted to split duties that were clearly under the principal and clearly under the executive director.’ Board members Vicky Francis and Steve Klima expressed concern that the new director of student services would have too much work because he or she would have more job responsibilities than the other administrator. ‘I can see this person living here,’ Klima said. ‘This is a huge burden to whoever takes this position.’ Board member Eileen Savage, however, said that if needed, the job duties could be altered in the future. Evans started with Los Angeles School District as a long-term substitute teacher and then became a full-time business teacher at Berendo Middle School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee and two master’s degrees in business and administration at Cal State L.A. In 1986, Evans decided to pursue administration because she thought she could influence more students on campus. Since her arrival at PaliHi, she has driven students who were struggling with attendance to school in the morning. One time, she spent hours sitting inside a car comforting a depressed student who was reluctant to come into the school. She coaxed him inside and has since seen him laughing and joking with friends. Evans also helped start the teleparent computer system, where teachers create automated messages about a student’s performance or attendance that are telephoned to parents. In retirement, she plans to spend time with her husband, Edd; two children, Mia and Edward; and six grandchildren. She said she will miss her job and loves to see former students. They often thank her for the influence she had on their lives. ‘I have helped a lot of kids,’ she said, smiling and gesturing toward the many thank-you cards and gifts in her office. ‘I have had a lot I affected.’

Gavin MacLeod Signs on for Second Term as Honorary Mayor

The Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce will hold its 59th Annual Installation Dinner on Thursday, June 12, at the Riviera Country Club. The festivities, including dancing, begin at 6 p.m. During the evening, actor Gavin MacLeod (‘The Love Boat’ and ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’) will be sworn in for a second two-year term as the town’s honorary mayor. He becomes only the fourth celebrity to serve a second term, joining John Raitt, Steve Guttenberg, and MacLeod’s good pal, the late Ted Knight. Antonia Balfour, co-owner of Oasis Palisades, a new health spa in Marquez, will receive a gavel as the new Chamber president. She succeeds Palisades resident Brad Lusk of Sunrise Senior Living Santa Monica. The Mort Farberow Businessperson of the Year Award will be presented to longtime Palisadian David Williams, owner of Mogan’s Caf’ in the Highlands and the longtime (recently retired) soccer coach at Palisades High. Criteria for this award are the three C’s that the late Farberow valued dearly: ‘Community,’ ‘Chamber’ and ‘Children.’ Past recipients have been Bob Benton, Bob Sharka, Roberta Donohue, Cheryel Kanan and Sam Lagana. This year’s Beautification Award (presented by representatives of the Palisades Rotary Club) will go to Palisades Charter High School, in recognition of its $1.7-million makeover of the school’s long-neglected football field and running track. Through its addition of a synthetic track and artificial turf field, Pali has significantly improved the aesthetics along Temescal Canyon Road while expanding year-round use of the facility. The annual Best New Business Award will be given to Palisadian Nicole Howard for her Internet endeavor, ThisWeekinPalisades.com, an online calendar of upcoming events in the community. Launched in 2006, the interactive site provides local residents with a weekly e-mail update each Thursday, designed to help them with their weekend planning. Along with Balfour, Lusk and Williams, the Chamber’s new executive board will include president-elect Ramis Sadrieh (Technology for You!), vice president John Petrick (Perennial Financial Services), vice president Greg Wood (Palisades Charter High School), and past presidents Roberta Donohue (Palisadian-Post publisher and Post Printing), Sandy Eddy (The Discovery Shop), and Roy Robbins (Roy Robbins Gifts and Stationery). The new board of directors will consist of Sanda Alcaly (Coldwell Banker), Brett Bjornson (attorney), Rena Bornstein (Cognitiatives), Zara Guivi (CalNational Bank), Nicole Howard, Sam Lagana (Pepperdine University), Jennifer Lowe (Metrocities Mortgage), and Angela Parker (Body Inspired Fitness). Leaving the Board will be Dr. Robert Bornstein and Lester Wood. Sam Lagana will serve as the evening’s emcee. The invocation will be read by Brother Atmananda of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. Live musical entertainment will be performed by Ernie Hernandez and his orchestra. Ruth Purdy Hoyt, daughter of Elbert C. Purdy and Elethea Hunt Purdy of Croton Falls, New York, and wife of Hamilton C. Hoyt, died peacefully at St. John’s Hospital on May 29 at the age of 100. She was a longtime resident of Chappaqua, New York, but moved to Pacific Palisades in 1994 to be closer to her daughter, Susan Hoyt Holloway, and grandchildren Linda and John Holloway. Ruth will be missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in her name be sent to the Croton Falls Community Church, P.O. Box 25, Croton Falls, NY 10519. Longtime resident Beverly Jean Mischer passed away on May 30 in her Pacific Palisades home. She was 69. Beverly was born in Sandusky, Ohio to parents Rolland and Elsa Meyers. She spent her childhood playing on Lake Erie with her cousins and younger sister, Christine. She attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas where she received a degree in English, and met and married Don Mischer in 1960. She and Don traveled the world together, living in Saudi Arabia for a year, before starting a family in Washington, D.C. After living in Manhattan for six years (Don was an entertainment director and producer), they moved to the Palisades in 1977 where they raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Heather. Beverly loved making her home in the Palisades and was an active member of the community, serving as co-leader of two Girl Scout troops and president of AFS at Palisades High (which Jennifer attended). She frequently hiked the Temescal Canyon trails and always had a front row seat at the Fourth of July parade. Beverly went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and taught communications at Loyola Marymount University. She was a generous supporter of the arts, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles and the Democratic Party. She loved to travel and visited parts of the world she said as a little girl she never imagined she would see. Beverly has touched our lives deeply with her great sense of adventure, her wealth of knowledge and wit, and her abundant, effervescent spirit. She is survived by her two daughters and her former husband. A memorial will be held at the Bel- Air Bay Club on Friday, June 6 at 1 p.m.

Artist and photographer Justine May Saylors died on May 24 in Lake Oswego, Oregon. She was 46. Saylors (n’e Walters) was born in Santa Monica on October 25, 1961 and moved to Pacific Palisades at the age of 18 months with her mother Kathy Mellen, who had also been raised in the Palisades. After graduating from Palisades High School, Saylors got her first job at El Toro Air Force Base, working as an artist rendering jet planes. She had a jet cabin simulator in her office. She left this position when she married Dan Kowalski in 1986, and soon had a son, Lance. The family then moved to Lake Oswego. She married her current husband, Eric Saylors, in 2000. Sadly, her son Lance Kowalski passed away in October 2003 at age 13 from neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. During his illness, Saylors was her son’s caregiver and became involved with Angel Moms, a support organization providing solace to parents shepherding their children through cancer and other serious diseases. Saylors was featured in the Washington Post in 2006 for the haunting and popular musical playlists she created and shared online to commemorate Lance and to help other grieving parents. In addition to her husband, Saylors is survived by her mother, Kathy Mellen (stepfather Bob); grandmothers Larrain Barber and Doretta Andersen; stepdaughter Loren Saylors and various uncles, aunts and cousins. A memorial was held in Oregon in May.

Six Pacific Palisades boys made history two Saturdays ago at Cal State Dominguez Hills, as they led the Westlake Village Oaks Christian volleyball team to its fourth consecutive CIF Southern Section Division IV championship with a 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23 victory over Thousand Oaks Oak Park. The Lions’ final victory avenged a pair of Tri-Valley League defeats to their archrivals, who were seeded No. 1 in the playoffs. The Eagles were trying to wrest the title away from second-seeded Oaks Christian and make amends for a loss to the Lions in the 2006 final. Oaks Christian (22-4) lost only one game in five postseason matches. Senior Paul Peterson, one of the six local players on the squad, holds the unique distinction of ending his high school career having won four CIF titles while playing three different positions (outside hitter, libero and setter). Peterson ran the floor expertly in the finals, tallying 54 assists and eight digs against Oak Park. Two other returning seniors from Pacific Palisades, opposite hitters Blake Fol and Dalton Gerlach, were instrumental to the Lions’ triumph. Fol had 21 digs and 12 digs and Gerlach added 15 kills and 12 digs in the championship match. Local juniors Shaun Powers (a defensive specialist who five digs in the finals), Oliver MacPherson (back row) and Charlie Caldwell (outside hitter) also contributed mightily to Oaks Christian’s title run. Amazingly, all six players also played for and graduated eighth-grade from Calvary Christian School, winning the Delphic League volleyball title in 2004. In the finals grudge match, the Lions built a 18-13 lead in the third game only to see Oak Park (23-5) storm back to take a 24-21 lead. Fol’s three kills in a row put the Lions in front, 25-24, then Alani Fua and Dominic Denham combined for a stuff block on game point as Oaks Christian seized control of the match. The Lions roared to a 20-13 lead in the clinching game but Oak Park crept to within 24-23 before Denham’s kill ended the contest and started a wild celebration on court with fans and Oaks Christian Coach George Hees.

Summer camps at the Palisades Tennis Center start June 16 and run through August 28. In the following interview, Head Pro Jon Neeter talks about the variety of youth and adult clinics offered by the PTC. PP: Why is tennis a good option for children? JN: Tennis is one of the best gifts we can give kids. It’s an investment someone makes at age 8 that continues to pay dividends at 88. Most team sports are played until age 12 or so, after which 95 percent of participants never play again. Tennis, skiing and golf are traditionally thought of as the three lifetime sports. Golf is great except that it’s not as much fitness and skiing is a lot less accessible. PP: What changes are in store this summer at the PTC? JN: We’re going to be very protective about what’s made the camps great in the past. It’ll continue to be a positive learning and playing environment. Our goal is to have kids racing out of the car at drop off and not wanting to go home at the end of the day. Where we’re going to make changes is in a more structured pathway for those kids who want competition. There are going to be more options for kids to play tournaments and competitions locally outside of the camps, but here in Pacific Palisades. PP: Is it true you’ve upgraded your teaching aides? JN: Every year it seems like teaching aides just get better and better. We’ve added a ton of new things that make learning the game easier and more fun. PP: When are the kids’ camps offered? JN: They run Mondays through Thursdays and are broken up into three sections. Big Hitters (ages 4-6) and Junior Development (ages 7-13) camps are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the afternoons from 1-4 p.m. we have the same Junior Development camp as well as a camp for tournament players. Finally, from 3:30-6:30 p.m., we have a camp for our nationally-ranked kids. PP: What happens with the rest of the programming while camps are in session? JN: Everything is the same except the Monday-Thursday morning adult workout times, which change a little. There are still a considerable amount of adult workouts and we have capacity for hundreds of players. There are junior clinics and workouts as well on Fridays and on weekends. PP: Who will be teaching the camps this year? JN: Thomas Dawson and I will run the camps. Nearly all of the pros from the last few years will be there too but there will be some great additions. I’ve been to a lot of clubs but I’ve never seen a coaching staff as deep as at the PTC. PP: Since camps are offered on a week-to-week basis is there a right amount of tennis for kids? JN: That’s on a case-by-case basis, but in general we have little to no burnout from kids in our camps. We’ve had 6-year-old beginners do everyday, morning and afternoon sessions who couldn’t wait to sign up for the fall. Camps are great in that they can easily and economically be used as childcare for working parents. Heading into this week’s final rounds of the Palisades Pony Baseball Association playoffs, one team stood out as a potential juggernaut: the Mustang Cubs, coached by Mike DeSantis. The National League champion Cubs dominated during the regular season and continued their winning ways in the playoffs, beating the Phillies (14-2), the Yankees (10-7), the Tigers (6-4) and the Red Sox )11-5) to win the championship. The Cubs finished the season with an astounding 19-2 record. “What can I say? The kids practice a lot and played hard every game,” DeSantis said. “I’ve been coaching [PPBA] for 11 years and this is the best team I’ve had by far.” In the Bronco Division, the Dodgers beat the Tigers, 6-4, on Thursday on a last-inning home run by Nick Rivera. The Dodgers beat the Red Sox (15-2), the Tigers (4-1) and the Yankees (9-6) on their way to the finals. The Tigers, meanwhile, rebounded from their loss to the Dodgers by advancing through the loser’s bracket and winning Wednesday’s first game, 9-6. The Cubs won the Pinto Division with a 8-3 victory over the Orioles on Thursday. Coached by David Howard, the Orioles were the surprise of the playoffs. They finished second in the American League, yet three posteason wins landed them a spot in the finals against the Cubs, who won 10-0 on Wednesday to force a winner-take-all second game.
