Ray Ogden, Sr.; Founded the Cleaners on Sunset

Raymond Neal Ogden, Sr., founder of Ogden Cleaners in Pacific Palisades, passed away peacefully on December 15. His wife of 57 years, Laura Lee, was at his side. He was 75. Born on December 27, 1932, in Ashtabula, Ohio, Ray moved with his family to Chula Vista in 1945. He was personnel manager at Rohr Aircraft in Auburn, Washington, before moving with his own family to Pacific Palisades in 1963. After going into business for himself, Ray founded Ogden Cleaners on Sunset Boulevard in 1969. He retired in 1991 and proceeded to enjoy avocado farming and investing. From 1979 to 1984, Ray and Laura divided their time between the Palisades and their avocado/horse/tennis ranch in Valley Center, located in northern San Diego County. They had several get-togethers at their ranch barn for square dance parties and invited many friends from the Palisades. Among Ray’s favorite interests were his family and friends, horses and horseback riding, dogs, cats, boating, fishing and tennis. His wonderful humor and influence touched the hearts of many people and will forever be part of the Ogden family. Ray had a blessed life and a life well lived, and Laura was the love of his life as he was hers. He passed peacefully with integrity and dignity. Ray was preceded in death by his father and mother, J.L. and Lois, and three brothers, Jack, Evan and James.   In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons: Ray Jr. (wife Val), Dennis (wife Mako), Gary and Jeffrey; two brothers, William and Richard; seven grandchildren, Daniel (wife Sarah), Matthew (wife Andi), Andrew, Brittany (husband Jake), Steven, Christopher and Kevin; and a great-granddaughter, Raelynn. A celebration of Ray’s life will be announced after the holidays. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Cancer Association of California, San Diego Branch at http://californialung.org If you would like to share your favorite memories of Ray or express your condolences to the family, please go to http://rayogdensr.personalizedmemorial.com

Ralph H. Henkle, Jr., 75; 40-Year Palisades Resident

Ralph Harold Henkle, Jr., a longtime Huntington Palisades resident and one of the first developers in the Palisades Highlands, died on November 17. He was 75. Born on January 7, 1933 in San Francisco, Ralph graduated from Berkeley High School. He attended UC Berkeley for several semesters before joining the army (and serving mostly in Europe). After completing his service in 1956, he graduated from William and Mary University. He earned his MBA at Wharton Business School in 1961 and worked as a mortgage broker in San Francisco and New Orleans. Ralph married Dorothy Lee Benson Henkle on July 25, 1964, and they moved from New Orleans to the Palisades in 1969, whereupon he became a developer. The Palisades Tennis Estates on Michael Lane later emerged from Ralph’s vision. Ralph belonged to the Riviera Tennis Club and the Bel-Air Bay Club. His passions included playing tennis and basketball, painting, USC football, and attending all sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his former wife, Dorothy (longtime manager of Bentons Sports Shop on Swarthmore); two sons, Kurt of Santa Monica and Matt, who attends Penn University; three daughters, local acupuncturist Heidi Henkle of Santa Monica, Krista Hopkins (husband Dean) of Venice, and Gretchen Mallios (husband Seth) of San Diego; and grandchildren Calvin Ross, Tucker, Emma and Alli Hopkins, and Gaby Mallios. For more information, visit www.sympathytree.com and enter ‘Ralph Henkle.’ This will provide details about the planned wake.

Raymond Nasser, 61

Raymond Edward Nasser, a former longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away on December 1 in Oxnard. He was 61. Nasser was born on April 6, 1947 in Los Angeles. He proudly served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam War, for which he received a Purple Heart and an Air Medal. He later became an educator and a poet, working as a teacher for more than 20 years. He loved to travel, and had been making his way from Arizona to Northern California, looking for a place to settle, when he fell in love with Tehachapi. Because of his love for that area, his remains will be laid to rest at the Bakersfield National Cemetery when it opens in the spring or summer of 2009. Nasser was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Nasser. He is survived by his brother, George (wife Mary Nell); his sister, Yvonne; nephews Jeffrey, Jason, Jordan and Sam; niece Ren’e; and grandnephews Nicolas and Nathan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Association and the American Heart Association.

Top 10 Stories of 2008

Winner Alex Bogomolov (right) shakes hands with runner-up Phillip King after their epic match in the “Shotgun 21” final at the Palisades Tennis Center in August. Photo: Jared Rosen

With another exciting year of sports on the horizon, it’s time to look back at the games, events and athletes that made headlines over the last 12 months in Pacific Palisades. Counting down the Top 10 stories in 2008… 10. “Hoop Dreams” at Howland’s Camp For the third straight year, UCLA men’s basketball coach Ben Howland held his youth basketball camp at Palisades High July 21-25 and 210 kids signed up–70 more than the previous summer. Players were placed on teams in one of three divisions–the SEC (grades 1-2); the Pac-10 (grades 3-4) and the NBA (grades 5-7). Campers were taught the basics of dribbling, passing, rebounding, defensive stance free throw shooting and jump shooting. “We want the kids to have fun, but we also want them to learn the fundamentals of basketball,” Howland said. “I see a lot of future Bruins out here.” 9. Dolphins’ Football Wins Charter Bowl Coach Kelly Loftus made a statement by placing his team in the City Section’s upper division playoff bracket despite a 1-9 record the previous season. The Dolphins didn’t quite reach that goal but they did win five games. None was bigger than their emphatic 21-0 shutout of Granada Hills in Charter Bowl III’Palisades’ first victory in the growing rivalry between the City’s two charter schools. The Highlanders had won the first two contests by a combined score of 58-13. “Goose egg, fellas!” an elated defensive line coach Ron Evans told his players in the post-game huddle, holding the bronze Charter Bowl trophy aloft. “That’s the best defense I’ve seen over here in five years.” 8. New Winners in Will Rogers 5/10K It seemed fitting that in the same year the Palisades-Will Rogers Race entered its fourth decade, it produced four first-time winners–a subtle reminder that while a runner’s prime is short, the race itself has yet to reach its peak. The 31st chapter of Pacific Palisades’ hometown race went off shortly after 8:15 a.m. on July 4 thanks to official starters Ed Strange and Dayne Coyle of Fire Station 69. First to finish was Brian Duff of West Los Angeles, who ran the 5K in 16:49. The men’s 10K winner was 32-year-old Mar Vista resident Kevin Purcell, who runs for the “Fluffy Bunnies” Track Club. Not knowing the course mattered little to Cal State L.A. teammates Vivien Wadeck and Shawna Burger, who won the women’s 5 and 10Ks, respectively, on their first tries. 7. Mustang Cubs Have Dream Season Don’t call it coincidence that the Cubs wrapped up the Palisades Pony Baseball Association’s Mustang Division championship in June at the Field of Dreams. It was a dream season for Mike DeSantis’ team, to be remembered as one of the best in the league’s 54-year history. The Cubs beat the Red Sox, 11-5, to finish the season with an astounding 19-2 record. They outscored their opponents by an average of five runs a game. “The kids practiced hard and played hard every game,” DeSantis said. “I’ve coached [PPBA] for 11 years and this is the best team I’ve had by far.” In the Bronco Division, the Dodgers beat the Tigers, 6-4, on a walk-off home run by Nick Rivera. The Cubs won the Pinto Division by defeating the Orioles, 8-3, in the deciding game. 6. Globetrotters Visit Corpus Christi From the moment they strolled into the Corpus Christi gym in February twirling red, white and blue basketballs on their fingertips to the tune of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” Harlem Globetrotters “Sweet” Lou Dunbar and Eugene “Wildkat” Edgerson had their young audience captivated. The dynamic pair did more than demonstrate the wizardry and skills that have come to symbolize the world’s most famous basketball team for 82 years, they also introduced students to the Globetrotters’ C.H.E.E.R. Challenge program focusing on cooperation, healthy mind and body, effort, enthusiasm and responsibility. “In our long history we’ve won over 22,500 games and to do that we have to work well as a unit,” said Edgerson, a 6′ 7″ forward in his third year with the Globetrotters. “Every day we put on a uniform our job is to have fun and make people happy. It’s all about having positive energy.” 5. Blue Perfect on Road to Pony Title Quite often the Pony Division gets lost in the PPBA shuffle, playing many games at night and at other venues. This spring, though, it was hard to overlook the achievement of Pali Blue, a local 13- and 14-year-old squad, which went 20-0 on its way to winning the Pony Division championship. Piloted by veteran coach Clark Porter, Pali Blue overcame every obstacle, including tough semifinal and final playoff games, to establish itself as one of the best youth baseball teams Pacific Palisades has ever produced. Pali Blue saved one of its most exciting victories for last, plating three runs in the first inning before holding on to beat Santa Monica Red, 7-5, to clinch the championship. 4. Mickelson Triumphs at Riviera As great a golfer as Phil Mickelson is, he has spent much of his career chasing Tiger Woods for the world’s No. 1 ranking. On a Sunday afternoon in February, however, he did something his archrival hasn’t–win at historic Riviera Country Club. For the second year in a row, the player known as “Lefty” was the leader heading into the final round of the PGA Tour’s Los Angeles stop, now called the Northern Trust Open. This time, Mickelson was able to finish the deal, tapping in a short par putt on the 18th hole for a two-stroke victory over Jeff Quinney, who had made a hole in one at the par-3 sixth hole the day before. “The names on this trophy are pretty cool and bring some element of history to this tournament,” said Mickelson, who takes his place alongside legends like Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Arnold Palmer. “Riviera is a very special place, a fun, challenging golf course that’s withstood the test of time.” 3. PaliHi Squads Power to City Crowns Not having a pool to practice in only served to strengthen the resolve of Palisades High’s girls swim team, which captured its third straight section championship in May. Despite not winning one individual event, the Dolphins had enough to outscore runner-up Cleveland 291-246 in the finals. One week before, Palisades’ boys volleyball team rallied to beat El Camino Real in five games to win its first City title in 10 years. Setter Scott Vegas had 49 assists and hitter Kene Izuchukwu was 19-for-19 on kills as the Dolphins went 19-0 and ended the West Valley League’s streak of nine straight City titles. Coach Chris Forrest liked winning so much that he added another title with the girls team in November–its second straight section crown. Led by City MVP Laura Goldsmith, Palisades took out Granada Hills in four games in the finals. 2. Pali Blues Kick to League Championship It’s hard to imagine a franchise enjoying more success in its first year than the Pali Blues had in their inaugural W-League season. The team debuted in January on a cold and rainy night at Stadium by the Sea, the Blues played Beijing to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition game, giving local fans a glimpse of the high level of soccer they were to enjoy all season. Under Coach Charlie Naimo, the Blues capped a perfect 14-0-0 record with a 2-1 victory over FC Indiana in the W-League championship game in Virginia Beach on August 2. The Blues scored twice in the final eight minutes, on goals by Amy LePeilbet and Kandace Wilson. “We’re very proud to bring a championship back home to the Palisades,” Naimo said. “That was our goal right from the start and it feels good to have accomplished what we set out to do.” 1. PTC’s “Shotgun 21” Comes up Aces No sporting event in Pacific Palisades this year attracted more attention than the Palisades Tennis Center’s first-ever Shotgun 21 World Championships in August, a unisex tournament that pitted many of the best male and female players against each other in a drop-hit format designed to create longer, more strategic points. “Every year we want to do something special for the community that says thanks for supporting the tennis center,” PTC founder and tournament organizer Steve Bellamy said. “This was by far the best collection of tennis talent we’ve ever had on these courts. With the power in the game now you don’t see too many long rallies like there were today. There were some phenomenal points.” Players had to serve underhanded, switching sides and rotating servers every five points like in ping pong. No second serves or lets were allowed. The lone survivor at the end of the 32-player main draw was Alex Bogomolov, who shrugged off a furious comeback by fellow former USTA Junior No. 1 player, Phillip King, to win the final match, 21-20, in front of a packed crowd at the public courts off Alma real. Jill Craybas, ranked No. 50 on the WTA Tour as recently as May, advanced the furthest among the women, losing to top-seeded Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals.

Quarterback Shane Skelly led the Cowboys to the Palisades Recreation Center’s Majors Division flag football title last week.

Drew Daniele scored the two touchdowns, including the game-winner on the final play, as the Cowboys upset the undefeated Rams, 21-20, to win the Palisades Recreation Center’s Bantam Division flag football championship December 16 at the Field of Dreams. Daniele dove into the end zone for the decisive touchdown on a 12-yard sweep, his second rushing score of the game. Earlier, Cowboys’ quarterback Shane Skelly threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Mardirossian. All three were also key contributors on defense. The Cowboys, who had finished the regular season in second place, also got outstanding play from Nicholas Massey, Mac Brenner, Anthony Spencer, Riley Byington, Billy Howenstein and Jackson Rodeno. “I’ve been coaching baseball, basketball and now football for about three years and I’ve never witnessed a group of kids with that much determination,” said Cowboys Coach Mark Skelly, who was assisted throughout the season by Curt Massey. “They never quit and really believed, down to the last second, that they would win. I’m really proud of them.”
