Sara Jasper and Joel Epstein

Sara Jasper, daughter of Shirley and Neil Jasper of Pacific Palisades, married Josh Epstein, son of Dr. Joel and Geena Epstein of Chicago, on February 17.
The wedding took place at the Casa del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, where the happy couple exchanged vows and celebrated in the company of family and friends.
Jasper grew up in the Palisades and attended Marquez Elementary, Harvard-Westlake School, Stanford University and UCLA Law School. She is currently entering her fourth year of practice as a general commercial litigator at Bingham McCutchen LLP in Santa Monica.
Epstein grew up near Seattle, graduated from the University of Washington, and is completing a Ph.D in pharmaceutical economics at USC. He works as an economist in the Medical Outcomes Research and Economics group at Baxter Bioscience in Westlake Village.
The newlyweds honeymooned in New Zealand and Australia. They currently reside in Santa Monica, where they enjoy cooking, running, and relaxing with friends and family.

If its dominating victory in the Charter Bowl one week earlier was a sign that the Palisades High varsity football team is ready to bust out, then last Friday’s 44-6 blowout over Reseda at Stadium by the Sea was merely an affirmation. The Dolphins appear to be clicking on all cylinders heading into Friday’s Western League opener and now, halfway through the season, they are suddenly viable contenders for the league title. “You’re on the threshold of something huge here, fellas,” drenched Head Coach Kelly Loftus told his players after their most impressive victory thus far. “We haven’t won a conference championship around here in a long time. This year, it’s your turn.” There was no league title on the line Friday, no playoff berth at stake. Yet when Loftus was doused with a bucketful of ice water as the final seconds ticked off the clock it signified that from here on the Dolphins will have plenty to play for. “When you have a great running game like we do it really opens up everything else,” sophomore quarterback Conner Preston said. “They couldn’t really key on one thing. By the end of the game it was obvious that we had them guessing what we were going to do.” Even Loftus was satisfied with the Dolphins’ performance, so much so that he made Saturday morning’s film study “optional,” though a dozen or so players did show up to review the tape, which mostly showed Palisades’ defensive front pressuring Regents’ quarterback Jason Perez into hurried and erratic throws. “We missed the goose egg but we’ll trade that for two defensive scores,” Loftus said. “They scored on one long bomb but other than that they couldn’t move the ball on us at all.” Linebacker Chris Hanuscin and defensive back Tyquion Ballard were awarded game balls by the coaches after returning interceptions for touchdowns on back-to-back Reseda possessions, giving the Dolphins a commanding 25-0 lead early in the second quarter. Preon Morgan intercepted a long pass at the 11-yard line just before halftime. Preston had another efficient game, completing 11 of 22 passes for 252 yards and connecting with Khalid Stevens on a 43-yard scoring pass on the final play of the third quarter. Stevens ended Palisades’ first two drives with scoring runs of 3 and 4 yards. Joseph Hyman caught five passes for 158 yards and, for the third week in a row, had a touchdown nullified by a penalty’this time it was a 50-yard punt return called back because of holding. “With guys like Joe [Hyman] and Khalid [Stevens], you know if they have room to run they’re going to take it to the house,” Preston said. “So I just try to get them the ball in open space and let them do their thing.” Lineman Fred Carter punctuated Palisades’ defensive efforts when he anticipated the snap count and shot the gap to sack Reseda quarterback Jason Perez on fourth down, ending the Regents’ final possession. The lopsided score gave Loftus a rare opportunity to empty his bench early, resulting in 1-yard touchdown runs by reserve running backs Bladimir Martinez and Malcolm Creer. Darius Moore caught a 57-yard bomb from Perez for Reseda’s lone score with 9:16 left in the fourth quarter.

Though the recent success of the varsity program is stealing most of the headlines these days, Palisades’ frosh/soph football team is enjoying a fine season in its own right. And don’t think varsity head coach Kelly Loftus hasn’t noticed. “Rocky [Montz] and his staff have done a marvelous job down there,” Loftus said. “They’ve got plenty of jackrabbits.” Carrying much of the load in last Friday’s 41-0 shutout of visiting Reseda was Kemonta Reed, who rushed for approximately 75 yards and scored on a 60-yard punt return in the second quarter. Freshman Zach Hernandez caught two touchdown passes’the first from starting quarterback John Lemoine and the other from back-up Nathan Dodson. Lemoine also delivered a scoring strike to Kevin Mann and ran for a touchdown. “The opening kick-off set the tone when we saw they weren’t that physical,” Dolphins fullback/linebacker Hakeem Jawanza said. “It was all downhill from there. The goal was to build enough of a cushion for everyone to play and almost everyone did.” Noseguard Robert Swanson dove on a fumble in the end zone for a defensive score that gave Palisades a 27-0 halftime lead.

Huartes Fund Grant Fitness Center

Palisadian John Huarte and his wife Eileen, in conjunction with Sound Body Sound Mind, provided funding for a state-of-the-art fitness center at Grant High in Van Nuys and attended the grand opening last Tuesday morning on campus at the school’s McKee Gym. John won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback at the University of Notre Dame in 1964 and was a backup to Len Dawson when the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl IV in 1970. “Eileen and I had a wonderful time at the dedication ceremony,” said Huarte, who has lived in the Huntington Palisades since 1993. “The interesting addition that Grant High is doing is keeping the fitness room open after school and well into the evening. They would also like parents to make use of the facility. They now also have stadium lighting and are trying to help a neighborhood that is desperate to have a safe zone for students and their families.” Joining the Huartes at the ceremony were fellow Palisadians Bill and Cindy Simon, who established Sound Body Sound Mind in 1999–a comprehensive physical fitness program geared towards promoting self-confidence and healthy lifestyle choices among high school students in the greater Los Angeles area. In partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Sound Body Sound Mind provides each participating high school with state of the art exercise equipment, funding for professional development and the necessary tools to monitor student progress at each facility. “The Simons are hoping that with my name and support we may be able to attract additional pro athletes to adopt schools,” added Huarte, who said he chose Grant High as a tribute to legendary Notre Dame Coach Ara Parseghian because the school has a high percentage of Armenian students. On hand to share the moment with Huarte and his wife were their three daughters, Mariah, Bridget and Monica and granddaughter Coco. Also in attendance were Grant Principal Linda Ibach and LAUSD physical education specialist Chad Fenwick. After three uneventful seasons in South Bend, Huarte earned the starting job and passed for 2,062 yards and 16 touchdowns his senior year, setting 12 school records and leading the Fighting Irish to a 9-1 record and the national championship in several polls. “Our only loss was in the last game at USC,” Huarte told the Palisadian-Post in 2005. “We were up 17-0 at halftime but they came back to beat us, 20-17.” But there were no losers, only winners at last Tuesday’s dedication.

Pali Spikers Stay Hot

It won’t be this easy in the playoffs. At least that’s what Palisades High girls volleyball coach Chris Forrest keeps reminding himself with each easy win his team notches on its way to another Western League title. Defending a championship is supposed to be harder than winning it, but so far the Dolphins have looked unstoppable. They have yet to surrender a game in league play, sweeping their first five matches’the most impressive being a 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 triumph over beach rival Venice on October 2. On Monday, Palisades (7-1 overall, 5-0 in league) wrapped up the first round of league with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 victory over host Hamilton. Senior outside hitter Laura Goldsmith again led the Dolphins’ attack with 12 kills and junior middle blocker Hannah Fagerbakke added six. Tait Johnson, a junior libero, had 18 digs and Pali served 11 aces. Last Wednesday, the Dolphins barely broke a sweat against Westchester. In fact, the bus ride over took far longer than the match’a 25-2, 25-4, 25-9 whitewashing that was highlighted by junior Lauren Gustafson’s 10 service aces and freshman Meghan Middleton’s five kills in two games. Pali looks to keep its league mark perfect when it opens the second round of league with a home match this afternoon against University. Girls Tennis The Dolphins encountered their first bump in the road to a league title when they suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of visiting Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies last Tuesday at the Palisades Tennis Center. Palisades won all three doubles matches’dropping just three games in the process’but LACES swept all four singles pro sets to edge the Dolphins, 4-3, in the City’s head-to-head format. The next day, Pali righted the ship by knocking off host Hamilton, 5-2, with Anne Doyle and Jessie Corneli posting victories at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. A convincing win over Fairfax on Monday set the stage for today’s match at archrival Venice.

Opinion: Castellammare Disgraced

This marketing brochure was published in 1927, touting Castellammare (Italian for “castle by the sea”) as “truly an old-world gem in a new-world setting,” just west of Beverly Boulevard, before it was renamed Sunset Boulevard. The developers noted that the Castellammare mesa, ‘lying on a wide, smooth plateau that projects from the mountains to the sea, is situated almost identically as its prototype which occupies a spur of Monte Sant’ Angelo that slopes down into the Gulf of Naples.’ Brochure: Courtesy Castellammare Mesa Homeowners Association

By VINCE FLAHERTY Special to the Palisadian-Post Back in the early 1990s, I was president of the Pacific Palisades Historical Society and a member representing Castellammare on the Community Council. I tried hard to get through to Mayor Riordan (and later Mayor Hahn and Mayor Villaraigosa), or someone on staff, about the state of affairs along Pacific Coast Highway in our town, but I received nothing but lip service from interns or deputies. I will admit, what’s going on in the Palisades along the coast isn’t as intense as what’s happening along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border or other hotspots around the world. But still, you can go to so many third-world countries that are really poor, relative to the U.S., and you will nevertheless find pristine coastlines where someone has cared enough to preserve scenic and historical features. Take the Castellammare area of Pacific Palisades, for example. It was styled after the town of the same name on the Gold Coast of Italy where the original developer Frank Meline (and his wife) vacationed with Alphonzo Bell in 1925. Bell was the oilman and rancher who developed several key areas in Southern California such as Bell Gardens and Bel-Air. In Pacific Palisades he backed Meline and his company in their creation of the Riviera, Paseo Miramar, Bel-Air Bay Club and Castellammare tracts. They even had plans for a long pier and a Mediterranean-style shopping village with tile roofs at PCH and Sunset where Vons is now. Those plans went bust in 1929, and for many years the serpentine streets on the Castellammare mesa existed as hardly more than a gothic backdrop for Raymond Chandler novels, of a time-forgotten place where you could drive past countless overgrown vacant lots before the gates of the next lonely Spanish Colonial mansion loomed out of the ocean fog. The place sat, haunted by a builder’s dream that turned into a nightmare, through the ’30s and ’40s, and then was suddenly built out entirely with smaller ranch-style homes within only four years during the boom after World War II. One of the things that remained, however, was the wonderful promenade along Castellammare’s coast highway. Built of concrete and stone in 1928, when builders could afford men with the time and patience to make something worthwhile, it had been intended to serve as an elevated walkway, so that gentlemen and ladies with parasols could take leisurely strolls in the salty air by the sea. Most of the Castellammare promenade is still there and could be restored, and probably would have been restored, if instead of certain city officials and their counterparts in the state of California, the local populace was fortunate enough to have had an evil third-world dictator along the way, who at least realized the value of tourism and the meaning of pride in one’s coastline. You can travel anywhere along the world’s coastlines from Acapulco Bay to Bali and appreciate the beauty of the natural coastal environment. But come here to legendary California, in the proudest nation on earth, and experience a coastline where for liability reasons bureaucrats have been afraid to remove parts of fallen houses and plastic tarps from slipping hillsides. Then, to fix the sliding dirt, they implement engineering solutions that pay little consideration to aesthetics. It wouldn’t be that hard to build things that enhance the surroundings instead of insult them. But hey, why change? Over the past two years, I have to admit, taxpayer bucks have been spent repaving PCH from Santa Monica to Malibu, following expensive improvements to parking and facilities along Will Rogers State Beach. Thank you, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Caltrans and other government entities that cooperated in making this happen. Yet I still mourn the fact that years earlier, instead of restoring the Castellammare promenade when PCH was moved slightly, somebody at Caltrans thought it would be a great idea to use the space they created in front of the promenade to erect a long chain-link fence behind which to store their construction vehicles and debris–stuff that could have been easily stored out of sight on the state land off the mouth of nearby Topanga Canyon. And it has been an eyesore like that ever since.

The ABC’s of Contemporary Art

Palisades Elementary Offers Unique Art Cadre Program

Each student at Palisades Elementary was given a cut-out of a blue dog, a 9″ by 12″ canvas and acrylic paint and asked to make his or her own painting, based on New Orleans Cajun artist Rodrigue’s work. Once finished, the paintings were hung on a handball court wall and displayed during the school’s open house.

W henever public school budgets are cut, one of the first casualties is art because it is considered a ‘non-essential’ academic subject. Palisades Charter Elementary not only provides art classes on a sustaining basis, but also offers an additional program, Art Cadre, which began six years ago. ‘The students are exposed to artists they might not study in a regular curriculum,’ said parent and Art Cadre co-chair Saliann Kelly. ‘For example, Alexander Calder is not on the list of artists to study, but he invented the mobile.’ The theme for last year’s school’s auction was Cirque du Palisades, so Kelly and her co-chair, Evelyn Wendel, chose a circus theme for the mobile. To start the project, Wendel and Kelly took students to view a mural painted on the school’s kindergarten wall in 2007 by the famous children’s illustrator, Cooper Edens, who employs whimsical, magical figures. The pair also exposed them to illustrations from his many books including ‘If You’re Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow,’ ‘Caretakers of Wonders’ and ‘Santa Cows.’ From there, the children went into the ‘studio’ to create separate pieces that would ultimately become part of a mobile. First graders cut out, then decorated stars, moons and balls with sparkles and glitter. The second graders designed masks and crowns, and third graders learned how to make acrobats. All were strung together and then attached to antique wooden tire rims, creating a dangling ceiling of color. In addition to Calder and illustrator Edens, students in first through third grade modeled the art stylings of contemporary artists Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, George Rodrigue, Louise Nevelson and Robert Rauschenberg. Although there is no art studio on campus, an extra room off the cafeteria functions as a location where the children gather once a month. ‘The kids are so excited when they come to work with us,’ Kelly said. ‘The art project provides the structure, but there’s a freedom in it for individual creativity.’ The program was a brainchild of former Palisades Elementary parent Nancy Cassaro-Fracchiolla, who told the Palisadian-Post, ‘I felt the need for children to express themselves outside of the box. ‘Art is controlled in some classes. Children are taught, These are Monet’s lilies and this is how we draw them. I wanted students to do something without a right or wrong way to do it, just create,’ Cassaro-Fracchiolla said. ‘I wanted them to learn about artists ‘off the beaten path.” She took her ideas, which included all grade levels working collectively to make a piece of art, to the school’s curriculum committee. The committee approved it, as did the governing council. When Palisades Elementary was chosen as a California Distinguished School in 2006, the recommending visitation team wrote: ‘Support for student learning is evident in the amazing amount of parent participation and initiative to devise and implement enrichment programs of fine arts.’ ‘Art is problem-solving,’ Kelly said. ‘There are so many parts of the brain it works; it encourages students to look at the world in a different way.’ One example of that is using words in art, which is a specialty of artists Ruscha, Basquiat and Kruger. Using a vinyl billboard as their canvas, students chose one of six words’ courage, wisdom, honesty, trust, kindness and respect’and then wrote the word as many times and in as many ways as they chose. Kelly points out that being able to work on a large piece of art gives students a much different feel from being confined to a desk with a piece of paper. One of Kelly’s favorite projects last year was working with New Orleans Cajun artist Rodrigue, who is known for his paintings of a blue dog based on a long-deceased childhood pet Tiffany. The spaniel/terrier has a blue-hued ghostly look based on the Cajun legend of loup-garou (ghost dog). ‘I loved this blue dog and I thought it would be so much fun to have the kids do the loup-garou,’ Kelly said. The students were shown Rodrigue’s work and listened to a story about the artist as well as the legend of the ghost dog. They were then given paper copies of a blue dog and allowed to glue it anywhere they chose on a 9′ by 12′ canvas. They used acrylic paint to make a background of their choosing. ‘My dream was to have all of them hung together,’ Kelly said. At the school’s open house, the handball court became an art gallery wall featuring all of the students’ paintings.   A fourth project revolved around ‘green’ art, with artist Rauschenberg as a model. The artist uses non-traditional materials, like trash from the streets of New York City, which he places in innovative combinations. ‘We had students looking at objects in a different way, by using recycled objects to create art,’ said Kelly, who received her fine arts degree from the University of Arizona and teaches printmaking during the summer in Michigan. One of the final projects was an introduction to printing using wood stamps from India. Kelly explained to students that formerly only the wealthy could afford textiles with prints, because of the cost of having it woven on looms. Once people started using blocks, even peasants could afford prints. Incorporating patterns, shapes and repetition, students made 12 tablecloths and 36 napkins, which are used at the school for special occasions. This year, seven projects will revolve around Art Cadre’s theme ‘World Change.’ (Last year the theme was ‘Risk: Going Further Than You Think You Can.’). The first project is scheduled for the end of October, and has a green theme. A large installation will consist of plastic bottles hanging from a school fence. Cassaro-Fracchiolla has promised to come back and lead one of the art sessions and Kelly is planning a project revolving around artist Red Grooms, best-known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and enormous ‘sculpto-pictoramas’ from ‘The City of Chicago’ to ‘Ruckus Manhattan.’ ‘I read that ‘making art is a viable and valuable part of the education of the mind and the soul,” Kelly said. Students at Pali Elementary are fortunate to be part of a program like Art Cadre.

Students’ Walking ‘Car Pool’

Resident Kelly Williams wondered what would happen if parents in the Palisades arbitrarily selected a day, and on that day, instead of driving, walked or took a bicycle to school. Williams, who lives in the Alphabet streets, normally drives every day. Last Wednesday, she walked her kindergarten and third grade child to Palisades Elementary, a trip of about 15 minutes. She noticed that there were six other kids who lived on her route to school. ‘I decided to form a walk pool, sort of like a car pool, only walking,’ she said, and invited the other families to join her walking to school. Immediately there were benefits. ‘Three kids who didn’t know each other became friends,’ Williams said. ‘Since one parent was walking, the other parents got to stay home, which kept four cars off the road.’ Marquez Elementary Principal Phillip Hollis is also urging parents to become a weekly ‘school bus’ starting on Wednesday, October 22. Parents will pick up kids as they walk by the children’s houses and continue walking them all the way to school. Hollis is encouraging families to walk to school at least once a week. ‘It would reduce traffic congestion for our neighbors, help kids get more exercise, lower carbon emissions and help build community,’ Hollis said. A nationwide trend of walking to schools is happening because many school districts are cutting transportation costs by eliminating bus routes. A Newsweek article (‘Waving Goodbye to the Bus,’ September 15) told about Nia Parker, whose bus in Columbia, Missouri, had been discontinued and who now walks to school instead. She and her neighbors travel the half-mile in a ‘walking school bus.’ Nia’s mother in the Newsweek article said, ‘It’s healthier for them to walk.’ According to the 1969 National Household Travel Survey, nearly half of students walked or biked to school. In 2004, a University of Michigan researcher found that less than 13 percent did. For many in the Palisades, walking is an option, but they often they feel a car will be faster. ‘I had to pick up three kids after school and take them to the park,’ said Williams, who decided to drive. ‘The traffic was so bad that my friend, who walked instead, beat us.’ For other parents, who live in the Highlands, or those who have their children at Revere Middle School, biking and walking are not options. Williams would like to challenge other schools to implement walking pools at least one day a week. Moreover, she asks, ‘If it can work for schools, why wouldn’t it work for businesses?’ Williams envisions Wednesday as a day on which everyone in the Village could walk or ride their bike to work. ‘We have a tiny little town that has everything we need,’ Williams said. ‘Walking could even promote local shopping.’
