TV’s Melissa Rivers Sees ‘Red’ in New Book

Save your jokes! Melissa Rivers is well aware of the ridicule that often accompanies a second-generation entertainer’s career. ‘I still get it,’ says Rivers, the daughter of comedienne Joan Rivers. ‘It’s a struggle every day. You hear it and you just have to ignore it and let your work speak for itself.’ Rivers’ first book, ‘Red Carpet Ready: Secrets for Making the Most of Any Moment You’re in the Spotlight,’ is a breezy mix of blunt advice, life lessons, and anecdotal memoir. The longtime resident of Pacific Palisades will sign the just-released book at Village Books on Swarthmore on Friday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m. ‘I think they’re surprised finding out who I am,’ Rivers tells the Palisadian-Post regarding those who have already read ‘Red Carpet Ready.’ ‘It’s fun. I hope it’s an easy read.’ The Post caught up with Rivers last Friday, just prior to Valentine’s Day, as she was knee-deep in doing publicity, starting with a playful appearance on KTLA Morning News and ending with a signing at the Grove’s Barnes & Noble. You don’t have to work in entertainment to relate to her trials and tribulations, she says. ‘I’ve had my red-carpet moments, too,’ Rivers writes in ‘Red Carpet.’ ‘I’ve failed publicly. I’ve had a fairy-tale wedding. I’ve stood on camera in front of one-sixth of the world’s population and told ‘Brokeback Mountain’ jokes. ‘We’re all affected,’ Rivers, 42, tells the Post. ‘People are going to be really surprised how much we have in common. People think I live this fancy life. But my parents were very strict. I had jobs from the age of 12. My parents’ work ethic was beaten into me.’ Candid and unabashed, Rivers has no problem discussing the warts as well as the wonderful in her life. Even her book’s cover is revealing: if you’re wondering about the tattoo on her left shin (prominently on display in the dust jacket art), it’s a Celtic warrior with heart and flame. Rivers defines a ‘red-carpet moment’ as the big moments in one’s life ‘good, bad or indifferent. It’s all about how you handle it, whether it’s losing a job or running into an ex-boyfriend.’ After Rivers and her mother were unceremoniously let go from their red-carpet duties for TV Guide Channel in 2007, Rivers did some soul-searching: ‘It makes you take stock of your life, and it makes you look back and ask yourself, ‘What am I gonna do now? How could I’ve handle things differently?” Professionally, Rivers has often teamed up with her brash, tart-tongued mother. In 1994, the pair portrayed themselves in an autobiographical television movie. For 12 years, they conducted red-carpet interviews at various awards ceremonies for E! and TV Guide. The mother-and-daughter duo also appeared on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ in 2009. Independently, Rivers has appeared on ABC’s ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’ ‘We work in a business where you might get in the door once because of a connection,’ Rivers continues. ‘Then you have to prove yourself.’ Her answer to her critics accusing her of coat-tailing is: ‘If I’m as bad as they said I am, why am I still working today?’ She credits Cooper, 9, for helping her evolve her worldview. ’It’s kind of a clich’ when people say having kids changes everything but it really does,’ Rivers says. ‘It changes your priority what’s important, what matters.’ ‘Everyone was telling me I should write a book,’ says Rivers, whose book is a result of ‘my time away from the red carpet. I thought a lot about it. What did I learn?’ ‘Red Carpet Ready’ is brimming with personal moments. Such as the time she was at a dinner party, where guests were passionately discussing ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ only to realize that one of those fanatics was Al Pacino, great actor of his generation. They bonded over ‘Dancing’ and now ‘he’s my pal Al,’ Rivers writes. ‘The point is, he’s a normal person. He doesn’t act like a guy who’s won an Oscar, been nominated seven other times, and acted with Brando in ‘The Godfather.” Rivers cites Shoshanna Lonstein, who rose to fame as a teen when she dated Jerry Seinfeld, as a role model for moving on. (After splitting from the comedian, Lonstein created a fashion line, married, and started a family.) Rivers also labels the sense of entitlement embraced by young Hollywood as the ‘Divine Right of Bling’ and warns that attitude can end careers. With passages topped by such section headers as ‘Live With the Masses, Eat With the Classes’ and ‘When Your Nipple Shows, Smile,’ Rivers peppers her entertainment-industry experiences with humor to offer tips on staying grounded that transcend the show-biz superficial. Appreciating yourself, counting your blessings, and appreciating other people inform the book’s subtext. She credits her co-writer, Tim Vandehey, for helping to pull it all together. ‘I’m the one who insisted he be on the cover,’ she says. ‘He didn’t care.’ Rivers enjoyed the project and wants to author a follow-up about being a single parent. Melissa Rivers grew up in Bel-Air and attended high school in Sherman Oaks. In 1989, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. A decade later, she married horse breeder John Endicott. The couple had Cooper, who goes by his middle name (his first name is Edgar, after Rivers’ late father), and they divorced in 2003. Today, Rivers’ household includes Max, a border collie mix, and a Jack Russell named Lola (‘She’s got a bit of the devil in her!’). For a year, Rivers has been dating financial investor Jason Zimmermann. Among Rivers’ favorite local destinations: Elyse Walker, Mabyerry’s, Beech Street Caf’, and especially Taj Palace on Monument. Rivers enjoys playing tennis at Palisades Recreation Center and taking Cooper to the Malibu-Palisades YMCA Rivers moved to Pacific Palisades after college. ‘I came back to Los Angeles, and I really wanted to be near the beach,’ she says. ‘The Palisades was perfect. I love living here. I love the park, the restaurants, the community feel. It gives you that beach community vibe but you can get to work in time.’ Naturally, she appreciates Village Books. ‘They’re always looking for true-crime books for me,’ she says. ‘[Village Books] is the signing I’m most excited about, and I’m going to get all of my friends to show up.’ Rivers is currently producing the E! program ‘Fashion Police,’ hosted by her mother, with whom she enjoys working. ‘We have a shorthand,’ Rivers says. ‘I know her strengths and weaknesses and she knows mine. ‘We created a franchise,’ Rivers continues, regarding their red-carpet shows. ‘I guess it’s something I should be proud of. But I like looking and saying, ‘What can I do next?” Show-biz aside, is there anything in Rivers’ life in dire need of improvement? ‘My backhand volley is not so good right now,’ she says, laughing. Back to the park, Melissa!
‘The Emperor

Theatre Palisades Youth present the musical ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ starting Friday at Pierson Playhouse, 941 Temescal Canyon Rd. Directed by Dorothy Dillingham Blue, the play is based on the Hans Christian Anderson story of the same name. The cast consists of 17 children, who range in age from 8 to 14. The story revolves around a vain emperor (Jake Spivack), who insists on wearing only the most beautiful, most exquisite outfits. He meets a tailor (Jacob Pollack) and his assistant (Earl Israel) who promises him a suit stitched with gold thread, which will also allow only smart people to see it. The emperor commissions them to sew the suit and then showers them with jewels. Royal advisors overseeing the construction of the clothing refuse to tell the Emperor that they see nothing for fear of losing their jobs because they would be seen as fools. Mary (Emma Spivack) and Sarah (Anna Reger) play sisters in the mythical kingdom, and Mary becomes one of the swindler’s love interests. At last the great day arrives when the Emperor marches in his underwear in a parade through the town. One of the youngsters points out, ‘But he’s wearing no clothes,’ and the emperor realizes he’s been conned. Six shows will play over two weekends”February 19 through 21 and February 26 through 28”at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; Sunday shows start at 2 p.m. This production is suitable for the entire family, including children ages 4 and older. Reservations are suggested. Tickets are $12. Call: 310-454-1970.
Wong ‘Fun Raiser’ at PTC Feb. 27

Pacific Palisades residents are invited to participate in a charity “Fun-Raiser” event at the Palisades Tennis Center next Saturday, February 27, to raise money for Glenn Wong, owner of 1st String Pro Shop in Santa Monica, who is battling Stage 4 lung cancer. “Glenn has been stringing racquets at his tiny little shop for close to 20 years and he has so many longtime clients here in the Palisades,” said event organizer and Palisadian Bill Schwartz. “This is about a community rallying behind one of its own to help pay for some of his treatments and expenses. It’s a chance for those of us who know Glenn and his fiancee–or even folks who don’t–to show our love and support.” The event will feature a “Live Ball” doubles tournament, a raffle, and silent and live auctions in which $25,000 worth of services and merchandise will be up for bid. There will also be exhibition play by current and former touring pros, and many former collegiate All-Americans and NCAA champions, including Justin Gimelstob (former UCLA standout, ATP pro, and current tennis commentator), Derrick Rostagno (former No. 13 in the world); Zack Fleishman (current ATP pro); Lloyd Bourne (former No. 73 in singles; No. 43 in doubles); and the Palisades’ own Chris Schoop (top doubles player at UC Berkeley and former satellite touring pro), as well as many of the fine teaching pros at Palisades Tennis Center and other courts around town. “We welcome all tennis players to join in this fun and worthwhile event,” said organizer and Palisadian Joyce Ng, who added that people who want to register for the tournament can e-mail joyceng.springboard@verizon.net. “Glenn is a great guy and really deserves this.” Among the auction items will be two box seats to the upcoming Indian Wells pro tennis tournament (valued at $1,000 each); a two-night stay at La Quinta Resort & Spa; a limited-edition autographed tennis racquet autographed by Rod Laver (valued at $10,000); a tennis racquet signed by Maria Sharapova; three Head tennis racquets donated by the Malbu Racquet Club; three month-long training packages at the Spectrum Club (each valued at $1,900); a signed copy of Andre Agassi’s new autobiography ‘Open’; $2,000 worth of hand-crafted jewelry from Rock Star in Malibu; gift certificates to FrontRunners, Marmalade Restaurant, Michael’s Eyewear and Denton Jewelers; 10 DVD feature films from MGM; a luxury condo timeshare anywhere in the world; and USC varsity tennis memorabilia donated by assistant coach Eric Amend. A $75 dollar donation is requested for anyone wishing to play in the “Live Ball” tournament, for which 75 people have already signed up. The tournament will run from 2-5:30 p.m. while bidding for the auction will be from 2-4 p.m., with pick-up at 4:30 p.m. To offer auction items or make a tax-deductible gift, call Schwartz at 310-451-1220 or e-mail bill@schwartzcompany.com. To donate money, make checks payable to Talbert Family Foundation, a 501-C nonprofit organization, on behalf of Glenn Wong. “I know these are tough economic times,” Schwartz said, “so for people to put up $75 to play tennis we want to make sure that every player receives a gift bag full of coupons, tennis balls and special offers from local businesses. Our motto is ‘Think globally, act locally.’ We want everyone to feel like a winner.” For updates on the tournament, readers can check out “Glenn’s Benefit” page on the 1st String website at http://www.1ststringproshop.com/friends.html or his “Caring Bridge” site, where event announcements are posted periodically at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/glennwong.
Dolphins’ Quest: Conquer City!

Photo by Rich Schmitt, Staff Photographer
The postseason has begun for the winter season and all four Palisades High varsity teams were selected to the City Section’s upper division playoffs. Below is the breakdown of the brackets and first-round matchups: Girls’ Soccer Kim Smith’s squad was seeded fifth out of 16 teams in the City Section Division I tournament and opens with a first-round match Thursday against No. 12-seeded Granada Hills Kennedy. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Stadium by the Sea. The Dolphins (15-5-2 overall, 11-0-1 in Western League) will be heavy favorites against the Cougars (15-6-1, 8-1-1), who finished second behind Sylmar in the Valley Mission League. Palisades has scored 76 goals and allowed only 16 this season, led by junior co-captain Kathryn Gaskin (25 goals, 11 assists), sophomore Katie Van Daalen Wetters (10 goals, 9 assists), freshman Jacklyn Bamberger (8 goals, nine assists), junior Samantha Elander (8 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Lily McGuire (6 goals, 10 assists). Six different players tallied goals and junior goalie Kiki Bailey made four saves to record her 12th shutout of the season in the Dolphins’ final tune-up, an 8-0 league drubbing of University last Friday. Kennedy scored 56 goals and allowed 28 this season, led by Soraya Ziarati (20 goals, 6 assists), Delaney Enriquez (13 goals, 2 assists) and Tiara Fuentes (10 goals, 5 assists). The Cougars share three common opponents with Palisades: Sylmar, Chatsworth and Taft, going a combined 2-2-1 against those schools. Palisades last reached the City finals in 2005 and this might be the year the Dolphins return to the championship game. If they get past Kennedy they will either host 13th-seeded Chatsworth or travel to No. 4 San Pedro next Thursday at 3 p.m. The semifinals are Tuesday, March 2, and the finals are March 6 at Contreras High. Boys’ Soccer Thanks to a dramatic penalty kick goal by top-scorer Max Ledesma with five minutes remaining, Palisades tied University 1-1 last Friday and wound up in first place in the Western League standings. The Dolphins (8-1-5 overall, 6-1-5 in league) were seeded No. 7 in the 32-team City Championship draw and blanked 26th-seeded Lincoln (5-7-1, 5-4-1) in the first round Wednesday, 2-0, on an own goal and a turnaround shot by Jesse Vasquez. Ledesma began the playoffs with 9 goals and Shane Centkowski had 5 for the Dolphins, who took a five-game unbeaten streak into their game against the Tigers, who finished third in the Northern League behind Marshall and Belmont. Palisades scored 29 goals and allowed 8 in the regular season. In the second round the Dolphins will host 10th-seeded Fremont of the Coliseum League at 3 p.m. on Friday. Fremont (11-2-4) eliminated No. 23 Venice 2-0 in the first round. The quarterfinals are next Wednesday, the semifinals are March 1 and the finals are March 6 at Contreras High. Girls’ Basketball Ten years ago and Palisades vs. Narbonne was more like a finals matchup. This year, they will meet in Thursday’s first round of the City Division I playoffs, with the 13th-seeded Dolphins in the role of underdogs against the No. 4 Gauchos in Harbor City. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. It has been a topsy-turvy year for the Dolphins (6-20 overall, 5-7 in Western League), who had to forfeit nine games prior to the playoffs but closed the regular season with victories over Westchester and Hamilton to finish fourth in league. Sophomore center Donae Moguel leads the squad in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game, and point guard Ashlie Bruner is averaging 13.2 points and 3.8 assists. Narbonne (19-9, 9-3) finished third in the Marine League behind Washington and Carson. The Gauchos are led by junior guard Tailor Butler (12.4 points per game) and junior forward Atoe’ Jackson (points and 7.6 rebounds per game). Both teams played Carson this season. The Dolphins lost to the Colts in the finals of their own Palisades Beach Invitational while Narbonne split a pair of league games with Carson. Should Palisades pull off the upset Thursday it would travel to either No. 12 San Pedro or fifth-seeded Chatsworth in the quarterfinals next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The semifinals are next Thursday night and the City finals are March 6 at USC. Boys’ Basketball James Paleno’s squad again played one of the toughest schedules in the City and was rewarded with the No. 6 seed out of 16 teams in Division I. The Dolphins (19-8 overall, 8-4 in Western League) begin their quest for the title on their home court Friday against No. 11 Lake Balboa Birmingham (14-11, 4-5 West Valley League). Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Each team finished third in its respective league. The Patriots split two league games against second-place Cleveland while Palisades won at Cleveland in a nonleague contest. Birmingham is paced by seniors Angel Gutierrez (16.7 points per game) and Sahdi Odu (15.7) while the Dolphins counter with senior wing Garrett Nevels (20.7), sophomore guard Donovan Johnson (13.1) and senior forward Kenneth Towner (11.1). If the Dolphins win Friday night they will likely travel to third-seeded Crenshaw (19-3) for the quarterfinals next Wednesday at 7 p.m. If the Cougars are upset by 14th-seeded South Gate, the Dolphins will host South Gate on Wednesday. The semifinals are next Friday at USC and the Division I championship game is March 6 at USC. sports@palipost.com
Blues Announce Contest Finalists

The finalists are: “GIGI THE GAZELLE” from Pacific Palisades resident Joannie Burstein Besser, “LIGHTNING THE BLUE DRAGON” from Pali Blues summer camper Emily Citron and “POLLY THE PORPOISE” from Post staff writer Michael Aushenker. Check the Palisadian-Post over the next several weeks for the latest developments in the Blues’ search for a new mascot, including your chance to design the mascot’s costume! In other news… next Sunday, February 28, the Pali Blues, along with Hollywood United of the local men’s Professional Development League, will be hosting free soccer clinics for both girls and boys from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Palisades High’s Stadium by the Sea to celebrate their upcoming 2010 seasons. Falcons Fly to Hoops Final

The St. Matthew’s 6th & 7th-grade boys’ basketball team reached the championship game of the Pacific Basin League B-Division playoffs last week, coached by John Gould and John Caravella. In the quarterfinals, the Falcons clipped Wildwood 37-36 and in the semifinals they defeated Crossroads 36-26 to improve their season record to 10-0. In the championship game against Westchester Lutheran, Nick Moreno scored 12 points, Matt Kaufman had 8, Matt Douglas had 6 and Dylan Cotter and Chase Aldridge each added 2. St. Matthew’s led 11-9 after the first quarter but was outscored 32-8 in the second and third quarters and could not recover. Rounding out the St. Matthew’s squad were Nicky Baron, Colin Enzer, Caleb Garbuio, James Mann, Pablo Mendez, A.J. Peyrot, Kia Torab and Marko Trapani. Boys’ Soccer The 6th-8th grade boys’ soccer squad, coached by Rob Risely and Gerardo Martinez, has advanced to the Pacific Basin League finals, where it will play Windward next Monday. In the quarterfinals, St. Matthew’s outscored Wildwood 11-1 as Matthew Koh netted six first-half goals. Other scorers were Jeffrey Elhers, Brandon Kupfer, Jack Newman, Quinn McGinley and Kieran Sheridan and goalie Cameron Schiffer made four saves in the win. In the semifinals St. Matthew’s beat Brentwood 7-2. Koh again led the way with 4 first-half goals as the Falcons scored two minutes into the contest and never looked back. Kupfer, McGinley and Tyler Newman provided the rest of the scoring while Schiffer had 3 saves in goal and was aided by the defense of Hunter Price and Eric Roosendahl. Rounding out the team were Ryan Bostick, Alec Graham, Andrew Radbel, Peter St. John, Hank Algert, Lachlan Montgomery, Henry Prentice and Brendan Sanderson.
Palisadians Kick to Perfect Season

Four Palisadians were key contributors to a perfect 9-0-0 season for the Harvard-Westlake middle school girls’ black soccer team, which won the Delphic League A Division championship. Defenders Mikaela Hong (8th grade) and Maddie Oswald (7th grade) were rock solid on the back line all season long while 7th grade strikers Courtney O’Brien and Quinn Frankel led a nearly unstoppable offensive attack that scored 49 goals in 9 games. Last Tuesday, the Wolverines beat St. Matthew’s 4-1 in the semifinals. Two days later they outscored Oaks Christian 6-3 in the championship game. Frankel had a hat trick in the finals and O’Brien also scored. Harvard-Westlake ran the table in a league which also included Marlborough, Viewpoint, Chaminade, Brentwood, Immaculate Heart and Sierra Canyon.
Sraberg Prevails at SCTA Satellite

Juniors from the Palisades Tennis Center continue to impress at USTA events across the country, further proof that the public facility off Alma Real is home to many of the top players in California. Adam Sraberg joined the PTC’s long list of tournament winners last week when he prevailed in the boys’ 10-and-under age division at the year-end SCTA Satellite Masters at Home Depot Center in Carson. Sraberg was nothing short of flawless throughout the tournament, winning all five of his matches in straight sets and volleying like a young Pete Sampras. He began his remarkable run by beating Eric Han of Fullerton, 6-1, 6-4, in his first match. In the second round he beat Ivan Smith of Tulare, 6-2, 6-0 before making short work of Allen Sokolov of Woodland Hills, 6-0, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Sraberg beat Gavin Spencer of San Juan Capistrano, 6-2, 6-3, and in the finals he ousted David Howren of San Clemente, 6-0, 6-4. On his way to the title he won three sets at love-an almost unheard-of feat at the Masters because the competition is so tough. Sraberg trains regularly at the PTC and is one of the most popular kids there. “It was a great feeling to play on a court that many pros have played on as well as having my own chair umpire in the finals,” said Sraberg, a fifth-grade honors student at Carlthorp School in Santa Monica. In addition to tennis, Sraberg plays basketball year-round on two teams and is an all-star baseball player for the West Los Angeles Little League. Meanwhile, Cristobal Rivera has advanced to the finals of the Gene Jung Tournament in Orange County, one of the largest junior events of the season. Rivera survived six matches and will play Gage Brymer for the championship. Although he is only 15, Rivera is among the PTC’s most gifted young players. Rivera first outlasted Xavier Saavedra, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in the first round, then beat fellow PTC junior Blake Anthony, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round. In the third round he beat Adam Bagdy, 6-0, 6-2 and in the round of 16 he eliminated James Boyd, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Rivera defeated Stefan Menichella and in the semifinals he made short work of Daymon Johnson, 6-1, 6-4. The final was rained out and will be made up at a later date. sports@palipost.com
