Katie Osterholt and Nickolas Ehret Exchange Vows at Tucson Guest Ranch

Katherine Ruth Osterholt and Nickolas Ehret were married on November 7 at Tanque Verde Guest Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Officiating at the afternoon ceremony was the bride’s uncle, UC Davis geology professor Jeffrey Mount.   The bride’s attendants included maids of honor Ellen Caldwell and Nicole Moler and bridesmaid Daya Wolterstorff, all of whom graduated from Brentwood School with the bride. Katie is the daughter of Jim and Debbie Osterholt, longtime Palisades residents temporarily in exile in Santa Fe, New Mexico.   Katie graduated from the University of Arizona and is a paralegal for a Tucson law firm. Nick manages sales and marketing for his family’s jewelry design and manufacturing business. The couple honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico, and reside in Tucson.

Five Cell Towers Proposed for Highlands

When Highlands resident Joseph Brown discovered that Verizon Wireless planned to install a cell tower on the median strip in front of his home on Palisades Drive, he called the city and discovered Verizon actually plans to install five cell towers along the four-lane road.   ’That corridor has no Verizon reception,’ said Jeff LaDou, a management analyst administrator for the L.A. Bureau of Engineering. ‘The company wants to plug the gap, where they have customers.’   LaDou, who oversees the cell-tower applications for the public rights-of-way through the city’s Above Ground Facilities Ordinance, explained that the five towers would be evenly spaced along Palisades Drive, and two of them would be located on median strips.   The first tower will be .6 miles north of Sunset Boulevard, the second 1.2 miles north of Sunset, the third near the south-end of Palisades Circle, the fourth on a median strip between the north-end of Palisades Circle and Palisades Court (adjacent to Brown’s home), and the fifth near Chastain Parkway.   When questioned which other cell tower would be located on a median strip, LaDou could not say. ‘I am short staffed and do not have the time to research your request,’ he told the Palisadian-Post.   There are median strips from Sunset until about the .6-mile mark and from Avenida Santa Ynez to Palisades Court.   Brown, an attorney with a law office in Sherman Oaks, thinks the city should do a better job of notifying the community about these cell towers.   ’Only a select group of people are informed of where these cell towers are placed,’ Brown said. ‘It’s pretty sneaky and unconscionable.’   By law, cell companies only have to notify those residents living within a certain radius of the proposed cell tower. Only residents living near the proposed tower have the ability to appeal the installation. Brown would have never known about the other towers if he hadn’t called the city.   Brown received a notice from Verizon, through a company called SureSite, on October 28 about the cell tower near his home between Palisades Circle and Palisades Drive. Then, the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering sent him a letter on November 27, saying that Verizon’s application met the requirements of Los Angeles Municipal Code, and the cell tower would be installed unless the city received an appeal within 14 days.   He paid the $100 fee to file an appeal for the cell tower. He and his neighbors will present their case at a hearing before Board of Public Works Commissioner Valerie Lynne Shaw in early 2010. Shaw will make a recommendation to the five-member Board of Public Works, which will make the final decision.   Brown does not oppose Verizon’s desire to provide cellular service to its Palisades Highlands’ customers, but he objects to the location and design of the tower near his home.   ’One of the draws of the neighborhood is the trees in the center median,’ Brown continued. ‘It’s aesthetically appealing, and a cell tower seems like an unnecessary intrusion.’   Brown pointed out that AT&T and Sprint managed to find places that were aesthetically pleasing.   His neighbor, Kent Tobiska, president of Space Environment Technologies, contends that the cell tower, which will be a 30-foot by 6-inches tall steel pole with antennas mounted on top, could also be a traffic hazard.   ’Traffic safety on Palisades Drive has been a rising concern in recent years following several fatal accidents, and a large tower placed in the center of the street on a major curve and a steep hill, is inviting a major accident and potential lawsuits,’ Tobiska said. In addition, Tobiska argues that the tower would be located above an underground stream that runs beneath Palisades Drive. In the late 1990s, the asphalt on Palisades Drive erupted resulting in a flood that damaged several cars near that location.   The neighbors are also concerned the tower will deplete the value of their homes.   LaDou explained that residents wanting to oppose the other four cell tower installations can speak before the Board of Public Works when the item appears on the agenda at an upcoming meeting. The board will have to give final approval for each of the five applications.   Tobiska and Brown have contacted Councilman Bill Rosendahl’s office, Palisades #4 Homeowners Association and the Highlands Presidents Council to seek support in opposing the cell tower near their home.   Brown is also asking for residents to voice their opposition against installing cell towers on median strips along Palisades Drive by signing a petition. He can be contacted at joebrownlaw@gmail.com or by fax: 818-907-1918.   ’I am trying to arouse community opposition,’ Brown said. ‘If people don’t stand up and have their wishes heard, this kind of thing will happen.’   Barbara Kohn and Chris Spitz, representing the Pacific Palisades Residents Association, are busy advocating for the city to pass a new comprehensive ordinance to better regulate cell-tower installations in the City of Los Angeles. They are asking for an ordinance that has clear and consistent standards and that provides better protections for communities and residential neighborhoods.   Spitz reported that as of December 8, 14 community organizations citywide have either passed motions or have written letters to the city to express their concerns about cell-tower proliferation and ask for regulatory reform. The Pacific Palisades Community Council passed such a motion in August.

Patrick’s Roadhouse, a longtime eatery located at Pacific Coast Highway and Entrada Drive, continues to face an uncertain future in the aftermath of receiving an eviction notice in November. The restaurant, which had been ordered to close by December 17, is still open, at least temporarily. ‘It will remain open until we go to court, which should be within the next 30 days,’ Roadhouse owner Anthony Fischler said in an e-mail to the Palisadian-Post on Monday. ‘I was served legal papers on Saturday.’ Ironically, the impending closure has nothing to do with business, which was good and is now booming following a December 21 L.A.Times story (‘Famed Patrick’s Roadhouse Is Facing Closure’), but rather is due to a tenent/landlord dispute.   The Roadhouse was established in 1974 by Anthony’s father, William Fischler, who leased the space from M & M investments in Santa Monica. After his death in 1997, the restaurant stayed in the family, but according to the Times story, three of the four siblings (Anthony, Clinton and Tracey) have had disagreements about its operation and ownership.   Five years ago, Silvio Moreira, who had worked in the restaurant for 19 years, took over operation of the Roadhouse and sublet from Anthony Fischler, paying him rent. (The family has continued to lease the space from M&M on a month-to-month basis.)   Moreira told the Post that he has always paid his rent on time and was surprised when an eviction notice was placed on the door.   ’I’m caught between two parties,’ said Moreira, a native of Portugal who was originally hired by the elder Fischler. In a December 3, Santa Monica Daily Press story, a reporter quoted Lee Benchay, a partner in M&M, who said, ‘I can only tell you a restaurant is open, and it’s going to be open and it’s going to be remodeled.’   If the building owner’s intention is to keep Patrick’s Roadhouse in that space, many wonder why M&M would suddenly give an eviction notice to Anthony Fischler and then serve him with legal papers.   Sculptor Tom Van Sant, who has a studio half a block from Patrick’s and rents from M&M, said he’s been on a month-to-month lease with them for the past 25 years.   ’I have great confidence in our landlord, who’s been good to us,’ Van Sant said. ‘Perhaps he [the owner] hasn’t had as good as relations with Fischler.’   The Post called M&M on Tuesday and asked if Fischler had paid the rent on time or if they would describe the tenant/landlord relationship. A spokesperson at M&M said, ‘I’m sorry I can’t comment, it’s in the hands of our lawyers and they’ve told us not to say anything.’ Moreira told the Post on Tuesday, that he has started to look at other locations, as well as investigating work for longtime employees in case the restaurant must close down. ‘I’m not attached to any ill feelings toward anyone involved in this ‘drama,” he said. ‘I’m also committed to creating something beautiful out of this situation … even if I honestly sometimes do not know how and what.’   (The Post published a previous story about the restaurant on December 10, titled ‘Patrick’s Roadhouse Faces Possible Eviction Dec. 17.)
