This summer has been awash in lackluster sequels: ‘Iron Man 2,’ ‘Sex and the City 2’ and ‘Shrek Forever After’ to name a few. But one good sequel took place at the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club last Tuesday: the return of Chef Giuseppe Barravecchia and his Italian cooking lessons, which segued into the Club’s installation luncheon. For the second year in a row, the club welcomed the amiable Barravecchia, head cook and partner of Pinocchio’s, the popular Italian restaurant and delicatessen at 970 Monument, near Sunset. Barravecchia returned with a different menu and, by most anecdotal accounts, his Sicilian handiwork exceeded last year’s luncheon, where he served two styles of pasta (rigatoni with eggplant and bow tie pasta with Bolognaise sauce). This time, Chef Barravecchia created trays of rotolo, a lasagne filled with ricotta and spinach, mushrooms and baked peas, covered in a creamy white besciamella sauce made with milk to give it a lighter consistency. With the pasta servings came slices of roast chicken basted in a vegetable pesto and covered in a white wine sauce, topped with hearty gourmet mushrooms. The Pinocchio salad, consisting of a tasty bed of baby spinach leaves topped with crumbled ch’vre, roasted tomatoes and diced almonds, preceded the entr’e. Squares of soft airy bread accompanied this appetizer. ‘Everything is baked,’ the chef told the Palisadian-Post, referring to the chicken and the pasta entrees. ‘I prepared everything last night here [in the clubhouse kitchen]. We’re slicing the chicken for presentation. It looks nicer.’ Palisadian-Post publisher Roberta Donohue and Cheryel Kanan, the Post’s business manager, were among the women taking part in this year’s cooking lesson, as did Jane DuBovy, Phyllis Genovese, and Ariane Sawyer, president of the Junior Women’s Club. Diligently, they rolled sheets of pasta dough pasted with a pur’e of ricotta and spinach, and peas. Donning white Pinocchio chef hats, the ladies valiantly pressed on ”in the face of the rapturous scent of the pre-made lasagna-style entr’e”to create the rolls unto which the besciamella sauce would be poured onto. The group employed fresh ingredients”saut’ed spinach and mushrooms, salt and pepper, olive oil, butter”and later served the food to some 50 guests in the clubhouse’s main room. By Barravecchia’s account, these local lasses earned their pointy chapeaus. In the kitchen, Sawyer said she was looking forward to trying ‘all of it! I’m excited to try the chicken. I want to try doing that for my dinner parties. This is an exciting way to learn how to do it.’ She added that this is a big year for the Junior Women, which will have a float in the local Americanism parade on July 4 and will celebrate its 75th anniversary at a gala event in September. ‘All of the proceeds from our events go to charitable events,’ she said. At the lunch tables, Sally Byun and Ruth White”guests of Alice Beagles, a member of three years”offered opinions during their meal in progress. ‘He’s a good chef, Byun said, taking a bite of her chicken. ‘I think it’s fabulous.’ ‘Delicious!’ said White upon finishing her pasta. ‘It was very tasty and it seemed like it was all vegetarian.’ Byun wisely withheld judgment on which course she enjoyed the most because ‘we haven’t eaten the dessert yet!’ Dessert arrived in the form of a mousse-like chocolate cake (not made from scratch at Pinocchio but savory nevertheless) that complemented the coffee. (All of the items served at the Woman’s Club event are sold at Pinocchio, save for chicken cooked in this fashion.) Wrapping up the meal, Linda Vitale Jackson introduced the new president and board members of the Woman’s Club. Co-president Trish Bowe looked forward to taking over the club’s lead position on this day. The energetic owner a State Farm Insurance business on Via de la Paz said, ‘I had a good co-president. So I hope I’m ready. And if I’m not, I’ll call Jean!’ Bowe was referring to Jean Aroste, who will now serve the club as secretary. She has been a member of the club since 1982. When all was said and eaten, Chef Barravecchia had crafted another delicious meal a la Pinocchio in Cucina”and that’s no lie!

Barnard Blazes to Record Victory

Palisadian Wins Her Hometown Fourth of July Race for Ninth Time

She’s been there and done that many times over, yet Sunday’s stroll through Huntington streets and up and down those switchbacks at Will Rogers State Historic Park was extra special for Kara Barnard, who won on her hometown course for the ninth time, more than anyone else in the 33-year history of the Palisades-Will Rogers Run. Leaving the field behind by the halfway point of the 6.2-mile course, Barnard coasted to her fourth 10K victory in 36 minutes, 56 seconds, moving her one champion’s medal ahead of fellow Palisadian Peter Gilmore, who won the 5K eight times from 1995 to 2006. “It’s sort of nostalgic at this point,” said Barnard, who turned 32 Wednesday. “I hadn’t run this in a few years so there were lots of new faces, but I saw a few people I know and everyone is always so fabulous.” Barnard now resides in Durango, Colorado, but was back home to celebrate her father’s birthday and “decided to do it since I’m out here.” She has won the 5K race five times, including her fastest time of 16:50 in 2000. The last time Barnard ran the 10K was in 2006 when she was runner-up to Erika Aklufi. Her previous 10K victory came in 2004 when she blazed to a personal-best 35:24–the fourth fastest women’s time ever. She needs two more 10K triumphs to equal Katie Dunsmuir’s six victories over a 14-year span from 1982 to 1995. “I’m a California girl but I’ve gotten used to trail running up in the hills and in the snow,” said Barnard, who paced Palisades High’s cross country team to the City Section championship in 1994 and went on to run both cross country and track at UCLA. “I’m going back [to Colorado] in a few days but I’m glad I was able to do this.” Shawna Burger, a 25-year-old from Santa Monica, had won the previous two 10Ks and finished second this year in 39:33. She won in 38:02 last year and clocked 37:56 when she ran it for the first time in 2008. After back-to-back 10K wins Burger hinted that she might try the 5K this year but she chose to try for the three-peat instead. Perhaps no one is more familiar with the 5K route than lifelong Huntington resident Lauren Aspell, who made her debut as a 10-year-old in 1995. On Sunday, exactly 15 years later, she shocked even herself when she made that last turn on Toyopa and realized she would break the tape. “I just got back into running a few months ago so I didn’t expect to win,” said Aspell, who works for Bounce Marketing, an affiliate of AEG at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. “I also just set a huge PR, which is an even bigger surprise. The last time I ran it was three or four years ago and my best time before this was 21:35.” Aspell covered the 3.1-mile neighborhood trek in 20:42, nine seconds ahead of second-place finisher Emily Berkin, a 15-year-old from Santa Monica. After matriculating through St. Matthew’s, Aspell ran cross country and track at Brentwood School, making the CIF finals in the 800 meters her senior year. Then, while earning her psychology degree from UCLA, she coached the girls cross country and track teams at Brentwood and Marymount. The first time was a charm for the men’s 5K winner Jeremy Doherty, a former miler at Illinois State University. The 26-year-old Santa Monica resident had been training with the Fluffy Bunnies Track Club and was encouraged to try the Palisades-Will Rogers Run. “I’ve run 14:20 in the past and my goal is to get back up to that same fitness level,” Doherty said. “I moved out here [to Los Angeles] a year and a half ago to work with Easton Sports. I’ve been running six days a week, 40 to 50 miles a week.” A veteran of the “dreaded” Will Rogers switchbacks, 34-year-old Kevin Purcell won his second 10K in 33:39, a 31-second improvement over his winning time two years ago. “I’ve run a few marathons the last few years but I prefer these shorter, faster distances because it’s over quicker,” said Purcell, who likes to run with Fluffy Bunnies teammates and two-time winners David Olds and Tyson Sacco. “We were all running together until the fourth mile. Then [runner-up] Mike Davies caught us on the switchbacks so I had to accelerate from there. Hearing the crowd cheering really helped me coming up that last hill on Sunset.” Davies finished 10 seconds behind Purcell in 33:49, Olds was third in 34:30 and Sacco finished fourth in 34:50. Purcell, Olds and Sacco are all training hard for the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, Minnesota in October. “I’ve run the 10K every year since ’96 or ’97 so yeah, I like it,” said Sacco, a 36-year-old from Venice who won in 32:23 in 1999 and in 33:45 in 2001. “We had perfect running conditions today. There was a good marine layer and it’s not too humid. Unfortunately, every year I get a little bit older but the course doesn’t get any shorter.” In the four months leading up to Sunday’s race, Jennifer Levi, a 36-year-old fitness instructor, offered a training program for local moms called CARDIO CORE and she was ecstatic with the results. “I’m happy to report that my entire CARDIO CORE group completed the 10K,” Levi said. “One of the women, Lindsay Hubbard, even shaved two and a half minutes off last year’s time! The other girls all ran it for the first time and they all did great.” Through the years, Levi has engaged in a spirited “Battle of the Sexes” with fellow Palisadians David Houston (the owner of Barney’s Beanery) and Scott Denham, who have yet to beat her in their hometown race. Once again, Levi was up to the challenge, finishing exactly one minute ahead of Denham and taking top honors in her age group for the second straight year with a time of 41:58. Houston finished in 48:19. “All three of us ran much faster than last year, so it’s good to know that age hasn’t slowed us down quite yet,” Levi added. “David wore a hilarious t-shirt questioning if I’d been surgically altered to run faster. My husband Dan even got into the competitive spirit, finishing in 49:46, and our kids Adelle, 5, and Braun, 3, participated in the Kids’ Fun Run. We enjoy the Palisades way of celebrating the Fourth of July!” David Grinsfelder, an eighth-grader at Calvary Christian School, won the 12-and-under age division in the 5K with a time of 19:20 while his mother, Vicky Collison, won the women’s 45-49 age group in 21:40. Palisadian Andrew Bland won the men’s 16-18 division in 16:40–the second fastest 5K posting overall and a significant improvement over 2009, when he won the 13-15 division in 17:34. Chris Milner won the men’s 35-39 division in 18:16 and local mixed martial arts and kickboxing champion Baxter Humby was second in 18:27. Brent Forrester won the 40-44 division in 18:53; Ronald Graham won the 50-54 division in 18:38; Brendan Gallaher won the 55-59 division in 18:08; Bob Gold won the 75-79 division in 28:42 and 81-year-olds Ted Mackie and Ralph Wilcox were the top two finishers in their age group. Nicole Jackson won the girls’ 12-and-under division in 22:21 while Samantha Elander won the 16-18 division in 21:54. Eleanor Keare won the 40-44 division in 21:00; Sue Kohl won the 60-64 division in 29:09; Judith Collas won the 70-74 division in 36:53 and Margie Werker won the 75-79 division in 40:12. Bev Lowe took first place in the women’s 55-59 age group in 23:09 while her husband John Riley, his new hip and all, was second in the men’s 60-64 age group in 22:07. Their daughter, Ali Riley, is a regular participant but missed Sunday’s race because she is in the middle of her first season with FC Gold Pride of the Women’s Professional Soccer league. The most impressive 5K female runner might have been Jean Shargo, by far the oldest person in either race, who crossed the finish line in 1:07:53 at the age of 90. In the 10K, Gregory Dunn won the men’s 13-15 division in 48:23 and 82-year-old Tom McKiernan finished in 1:17:58 to top his age division. Grant Stromberg, fresh off a breakthrough sophomore year at Palisades High, won the men’s 16-18 division in 35:34. In May, Stromberg set a 10th-grader City finals record in the 3200 with a time of 9:38.9 and just missed qualifying for the state meet. “Grant’s really going to be awesome by the time he’s a senior,” said longtime Palisades High track and cross country coach Ron Brumel, who showed up Sunday to cheer for his past and present Dolphins. “He loves to run, he just keeps improving and he always runs negative splits, meaning he’s got a lot left at the end of races.” Sophia Stone won the women’s 16-18 division in 43:21. She was a sophomore at Palisades High in the spring, placing 10th in the 1600 at City finals, helping the girls’ varsity capture its first section track and field championship. Michaela Keefe took the women’s 12-and-under division in 54:27 and Helga Jessen was first in the 65-69 division in 1:07:32. The field of 2,480 runners (1,422 in the 5K; 1,058 in the 10K) included 1,156 patriotic Palisadians. The theme at last week’s fifth annual Ben Howland Youth Basketball Camp was simple: work hard, play hard have fun. That’s what 195 kids who participated did, and players and coaches alike left the Palisades High gym satisfied. “This might be the best camp we’ve had here yet because you all have such good attitudes and are very coachable,” Howland told his campers at the awards ceremony Friday. “That’s the kind of player we like to recruit at UCLA because those are the players who keep getting better every day, every week, every month and every year. You have to spend time to be a good player, it doesn’t just happen.” That was one of the many messages kids took from the five-day camp, which included 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games and drills geared towards the basic fundamentals–shooting, passing, dribbling and defense. Arkansas won the SEC Division (grade 1-2) after a convincing 29-19 win over Florida in the final. Coached by recent PaliHi graduate Brice Williams, who played both football and basketball for the Dolphins, Arkansas’ roster consisted of Isaac Akin, Alex Amster, Aaron Frey, Jackson Gelbard, Rebecca Gould, Jack North, Benjamin Tannenbaum and Leigh Wooster. The Razorbacks went 8-1 on their way to the title. North, Tannenbaum and Wooster also won the 3-on-3 competition. Eli Nickoll of Mississippi won the “Hot Shot” contest, Cameron MacDonald of Florida was named Best Defensive Player and Kentucky’s Augie Byers won the Best Attitude Award. The Most Valuable Player honor went to Aaron Goldstein of Mississippi State. The pressure was on PaliHi boys’ coach James Paleno, who traditionally coaches UCLA in the PAC-10 Division (grades 3-4). The Bruins lost to Cal in the semifinals in sudden death overtime. Cal went on to beat Stanford, 28-20, in Friday’s championship game and compiling an impressive 8-1 record under coach Austin Bly. “It was a tough way to lose,” Paleno admitted. In the 3-on-3 competition, Everett Graves, Akosh Davani and Ramteen Rastegar of Oregon took first place. Daniel Niv of USC won the “Hot Shot” competition and Stanford’s Jake Lyon was named Best Defensive Player. The Attitude Award went to Maya Schneider of Cal and the Bears’ Brett Polson was selected Most Valuable Player. The Spurs went 9-1 and wound up winning the NBA Division (grades 5-7) on Adam Stryer’s go-ahead free throw with four seconds left in a 41-40 victory over the Celtics in the championship game. Coached by former Palisades High player Isaiah Sago, the Spurs roster consisted of Stryer, Jack Weiner, Brendan Sharpe, Scott Polson, Jeremiah Fountain, Luke Bennett and Joshua Baruch. Holden Thomas of the Celtics was named Most Valuable Player. He also teamed up with Wiener and the Lakers’ Joshua Miller to win the 3-on-3 competition. Charlie Ellis of the Pacers won the “Hot Shot” competition in which players had one minute to make as many baskets as possible from designated spots on the court. Jack Elias of the Lakers got the award for Best Attitude and Stryer was named Best Defensive Player. Besides Sago and Williams, four other ex-Dolphins were coaches at the camp. Paul Davis (Class of 2007) coached Mississippi State; Zaiid Leflore (Class of 1995) coached Washington; Tyree Williams (Class of 1997) coached Stanford and Brian Barner (Class of 2007) coached Auburn. “It was a lot of fun coaching these kids,” Williams said. “I’d like to come back and do it again if I can.”

Grace Cohen Ices Interclub Open

Nine-year-old Grace Cohen, who will be a fifth-grader at Marquez Elementary in the fall, has competed in and won three recent figure skating competitions’the South Bay Open, the Southern California Open and last weekend the Interclub Open in Paramount. Cohen now competes at the pre-juvenile level, where she has five double jumps, including a double Lutz and two doubles in combination. She is coached by Heather McLaughlin and Sondra Holmes and trains at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. * * * * * * Vaulter Rolls ‘Lucky 11′ in Las Vegas Palisades High sophomore pole vaulter Jamie Greenberg cleared 11 feet, one quarter inch to win the intermediate girls event last Sunday at the Western Region Junior Track & Field Championships in Las Vegas. She also qualified for the National Junior Olympics later this month in Sacramento. Greenberg won the City pole vault in May with a personal-high 10′ 6″ and qualified automatically for the state meet in Clovis, where she cleared 11’ 3″ on her third attempt, tying for 11th place in Division I and placing third among underclassmen.

Brian Shea Is Parade Marshal

Tall and lean, Brian Shea is the picture of a runner. And while he has never run the Palisades-Will Rogers 10K race on the Fourth of July, he has run the course countless times, and co-founded the race with the late Chris Carlson in 1978.   Honoring Shea’s support and hands-on attention to the Will Rogers 5/10K races as director for the past 32 years, the PAPA committee has named him the 2010 parade marshal and he will ride with his family down the parade route on Sunday.   Shea recalls the day in 1977, the moment even, when he and Carlson conceived of the idea of a race. They had just completed the Brentwood 10K and were sitting on the grass on San Vicente waiting for the Brentwood Memorial Day parade to begin.   ’We thought, why not have a race in the Palisades?’   With their running buddy Bill Klein, the Palisades neighbors set about making the race a reality and mapping out the route, which turned out to follow the same route the three men ran every morning’up to Will Rogers State Historic Park and back. At the time, Klein protested, suggesting that the course would be too difficult, but he was overruled, which turned out to be a good thing. Over the decades, the race has attracted between 2,500 to 3,000 runners yearly, while contributing over $1 million in profits to the Optimist Youth Homes and Family Services.   ’I think that one of the draws of this race, apart from its difficulty [a 1,000-ft. gain with multiple switchbacks], is that it’s the only race that still allows runners to register on the day of the race,’ Shea says. The registration fee jumps from $35 for pre-registration to $45 on Sunday.   Shea is one of those rare residents of Pacific Palisades who grew up here (his family moved to Ocampo Drive in 1950) and found a way to return early in his career.   One of three children (sister Karen and brother Bill), Brian attended St. Martin of Tours and Villanova High School in Ojai. After graduating from Whittier College, he studied for a master’s degree in business at UCLA, but was drafted. The year was 1969, and a cataclysm of events collided at once.   ’I was going to be married in June, and I received my notice to report to basic training,’ Shea recalls. ‘I called one army office after another and found little sympathy. So I called Alphonso Bell’s office, talked to the Congressman and told him that I’d go anywhere, anytime for basic training if I could please delay it just for a couple of days. Well, I ended up at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in the heat of the summer.’   But Brian and Pam (nee Ross), who graduated with the first class at Palisades High School, were able to celebrate their wedding as scheduled. Pam is now a retired nurse and active in the Angels Program,’a team of’highly trained’volunteers who assist patients and families that are receiving emergency care at Saint John’s Hospital. The couple has three grown daughters: Stacy and Katie Shea and Kelly Taylor.   After beginning his banking career with Security Pacific Bank (he was able to serve in the Army Reserve for six years), Shea was hired by Santa Monica Bank as assistant manager of its Palisades branch in 1972. He became manager in 1978.   A people person, Shea thrived in branch banking and excelled in building the customer base, which depends on establishing relationships, which often evolve into friendships.   A case in point is the assistance provided by several of the Palisades physicians at the Santa Monica Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group, who have provided medical aid (and sponsorship support) for the Will Rogers races every year since 1978.   Once again, Shea has a strong race committee, many of whom are Ridge Runners, a local running club that used to meet in front of Bay Pharmacy at 5:30 in the morning. With 32 years of experience, Shea admits that a lot of the details are in his head, but he would like to see younger people take more leadership, especially in coordinating the half-mile Kids Run, which regularly attracts scores of boys and girls.   Shea has served the community not only in his professional capacity but as a volunteer, including the Optimist Club, PAPA (the Palisades Americanism Parade Association), PRIDE and Chamber of Commerce.   Indeed, he is respected by a great number of Palisadians. When Shea assumed the presidency of PRIDE (the community beautification group) in 1998, outgoing president Ron Dean was confident. ‘Brian’s a leader. He not only handles meetings well, but when he says he’ll do something, he actually does it, and gets it done well.’   Officially retired in January from East-West Bank (he left Santa Monica Bank in 1994), Shea nurtures several board positions, including the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation, which seems natural for a man who for years enjoyed running up to this treasured property from his home in the Huntington Palisades. His aim now is to solve the parking dilemma at the state park, which pivots on the $12 entry fee. Park visitors who don’t wish to pay the fee are parking on streets in the adjacent neighborhood.   Shea and the Foundation board are planning to host a town hall meeting at the ranch where they can discuss the issue with neighbors and brainstorm other ideas to encourage more park participation.   With a lifetime of running behind him (he ran 15 marathons), Shea has switched from running to yoga, which he does twice a week with a group of friends. On the Fourth of July, he’ll be monitoring the early- morning races and then settling down that afternoon in a horse-drawn carriage with his whole family. He is especially looking forward to sharing the ride with his 18-month-old granddaughter, appropriately named Shea.

Meet the New Council President: Janet Turner

Every day, Marquez Knolls resident Janet Turner looks out her window at the neighbors’ third-story addition blocking her view of the ocean and is reminded of how she became involved in the community.   ’You might think that something unpleasant has happened to you, but it is really a blessing in disguise,’ Turner said of her neighbors’ decision to expand their home in 2005, which led Turner to become a community activist. ‘I found that I love helping to build my community and make it the place it is.’   On July 8, Turner will oversee her first meeting of the Pacific Palisades Community Council. She is taking over the helm from Richard G. Cohen, a senior vice president with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, who served two years.   In a recent interview, Turner explained that when she first learned about her neighbors’ plans, she invited the other neighbors over to her house on the 600 block of Lachman Lane and asked them to help her launch a campaign against the project.    ‘Almost all my neighbors showed up. I was impressed because they were all busy people,’ Turner said. ‘That was my first sense of that inner joy of being so much a part of the community.’   After filing two appeals with the city, Turner and the other homeowners lost their case. Turner told the Palisadian-Post in a recent interview that her block on Lachman Lane falls under the city’s general municipal building code, which doesn’t protect views. Her street also does not have any CC&Rs (covenants, conditions and restrictions).   Despite losing, Turner discovered the importance of the Community Council during the process.    ‘It was pretty difficult to be noticed, but once the Community Council was willing to hear us, the city finally began to take us seriously,’ said Turner, a television and movie producer. ‘It shows how important a community council can be. The Council sifts through complaints and lets the city know what might be legitimate.’   Recognizing that the Council has the power to help change city codes, Turner ran for representative of Area 3 (the Marquez Knolls and Bel-Air Bay Club neighborhoods) and was elected in October 2006. She now looks forward to the L.A. City Council passing the Baseline Hillside Ordinance, which is currently being developed.   She recalls L.A. City Councilman Bill Rosendahl promising that after this anti-mansionization ordinance is approved, he will propose a view-protection ordinance, so she is hopeful that it comes to fruition.   In 2006, Turner also joined the Marquez Knolls Property Owners Association (MKPOA), and has been a board member ever since.   Over the past four years, Turner has advocated that a Palisades High School police officer, who pepper-sprayed several community students, be temporarily removed until after the investigation. When her neighbors complained about traffic flow and safety, she encouraged Marquez Elementary School Principal Phillip Hollis to rework the school’s traffic plan.   Turner has also helped residents of Charmel Place successfully keep a T-Mobile cell tower out of their residential neighborhood. ‘I feel that neighbors should have a say to what’s going on,’ she said. ‘The mobile companies do have more than one location to choose from.’   As Council chair, Turner imagines that she will continue to face cell-tower issues. She also anticipates that the city’s budget crisis will be ongoing, so she would like to form a budget committee comprising Council members who can make recommendations to the city.   ’It will be important for us to ring in on where we stand on what is being cut and not,’ Turner said. ‘Fire and police are our biggest concerns.’   She would also like to improve communication with the community about the Council’s activities.   ’I would like to make myself available to organizations, churches and schools to tell them about the work of the Council. I would really like people to get involved.’   As Turner works to accomplish these goals, she will also be busy producing movies and television shows.   A graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, Turner started her career working for talk shows. She pre-interviewed guests, selected visuals and props and wrote interview questions for the hosts. She worked for ‘The Merv Griffin Show,’ ‘The John Davidson Show’ and ‘The Home Show,’ interviewing celebrities such as Barry Manilow and Sean Connery.   Turner made her first movie about Geraldine Jensen, founder of the Association for Children and Enforcement of Support (ACES), a child-support advocacy organization. She came up with the idea while working on ‘The Home Show.’   ’Geraldine was going to be a guest on the show, and after I read her life story, I thought, there’s a movie here,’ Turner said.   In 1994, Turner produced the movie, ‘Abandoned and Deceived,’ which aired on ABC in March 1995. Lori Loughlin of ‘Full House’ played Jensen.   ’Thousands of women have called ACES as a result of the movie,’ Turner said ‘It’s very gratifying.’   Today, Turner owns a production company, Helfgott-Turner Productions, with her husband, Daniel Helfgott, a television and movie writer, producer and director who she met in college.   They have just created a pet series with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that will be launched in syndication in January 2011 by Associated Television International.’   Turner and Helfgott are also working on a movie about how the U.S. government hid the fact that Americans were sent to Nazi concentration camps as prisoners of war. The movie, ‘The Last Untold Story of World War II,’ is based on Mitchell Bard’s book ‘Forgotten Victims: The Abandonment of Americans in Hitler’s Camps.’   Turner said she makes movies based on real life because she believes it is important to fight for justice.   ’I have internal optimism that you can get things changed,’ she said.

Palisades Charter High School graduated 543 seniors during a 90-minute ceremony at the Stadium by the Sea last Thursday evening. More than 3,000 people sat in the bleachers and lined the fences as the school’s orchestra and concert band, under the direction of Josh Elson and Arwen Hernandez, played the traditional ‘Pomp and Circumstance.’   Noisemakers, blast horns, balloons and large signs were prohibited this year so that everybody could hear the name of each student being called and see them them receive their diplomas. ‘This was about respect and courtesy for the graduates, their friends and family,’ said Richard Thomas, PaliHi’s director of instruction.   Student Body President Ramin Badiyan led the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by the National Anthem, sung by senior Elena Loper. The appreciative response for Loper when she hit high B flat was deafening. ‘She has an amazing voice,’ choir director Elson said after the ceremony.   Senior class president Bianca Bernardi welcomed everyone in English, followed by the the same welcome in Armenian. Students welcomed the crowd in 16 other languages, including Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, Bengali, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Nigerian.   ’We looked at the home languages of our students,’ Thomas said, ‘and then asked students if they wanted to try out to speak at graduation.’ This multi-lingual welcome was a way of involving the entire school community, he added, and represents the diversity of the school.   This year, also after auditions, three student speakers gave short speeches, and Chelsea Cobbs wrote a poem titled ‘Dear Palisades’ that was selected for the inside the front cover of the program.   Kareasia Dunbar-Jones, a cheerleader and traveling student who will attend the University of Arizona, spoke about how the graduation marked personal successes for students the past four years. These successes included waking up at 5 a.m. to get to school, taking extra night classes or summer school, and on a lighter note, still having their original cell phones from freshman year. She thanked the faculty and administration for ‘letting us express who we are, while molding us to successfully meet our challenges.’   ’Self is not something one finds, but that one creates,’ said Sparkle Hodge, who was prom queen and participated in choir. ‘The moments we have spent here have created who we are today.’ Hodge, who will attend Agnes Scott College, a liberal arts women’s college in Decatur, Georgia, urged her classmates to ‘continue to thrive as you create the new you.’    Julian Schwartzman, who was active in leadership and drama, took a more humorous tact, breaking his tie with PaliHi (a school founded in 1961), much like one might break up with a girlfriend. ‘It’s time to start seeing other schools,’ said Schwartzman, who is headed to Cal State Northridge. ‘Baby, baby, don’t give me that poker face, you’re almost 50! I have to go to college because I’m not going to stay with you forever.’   For a musical interlude, Elson arranged a medley of ‘Songs for Moving On’ that featured solos by senior choir members Mia Canter, Tasha Solomita, Wyn Delano, Angelyn Suh and Sparkle Hodge. The senior instrumentalists were Andrew Dennett, Pilar Garcia-Brown, Brooke Greenberg, Chauncey Hicks, Jackie Rosen and Heeju Yang. Valedictorian Alexandra Khitun, who had a 4.413 GPA after completing 13 advanced placement (AP) classes and will attend Dartmouth, addressed her peers with a quote from an American-born essayist Logan Smith. ‘There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.’ She said that ever since her graduation from Paul Revere, she had hoped she would be valedictorian, but once she arrived at this point she had writer’s block, making it hard to enjoy the moment.   ’Speeches always talk about how this day is not the end but a new beginning and how it’s all about the journey and not the destination,’ said Khitun, a Playa Del Rey resident.”But to me this day is nothing if not a destination and I hope that we will all have the wisdom to thoroughly enjoy it.’   Salutatorian was Pacific Palisades resident Brooke Greenberg, who will attend UC Berkeley and had a 4.3 GPA, having also taken 13 AP classes.   Principal Marcia Haskin told the students that two years ago when she was serving as an interim principal, she never imagined that she would be principal for their graduation.   ’You’ve made me proud that you took advantage of the excellent education offered here,’ Haskin said quoting novelist John Grisham. ‘Each of you is an original. Each of you has a distinctive voice. When you find it, your story will be told. Your voice will be heard.’   PaliHi graduates will attend colleges ranging from UCLA, Washington, Michigan and Wisconsin to Brown, Yale, Vassar and Wellesley, and abroad to Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Aberystwyth University in Wales.
