Suzanne Northrop McPherson, 69; Passionate, Athletic, Outspoken

Suzanne McPherson and her husband, Douglas
Suzanne McPherson and her husband, Douglas

Suzanne Northrop McPherson, a social worker and therapist for more than 40 years, died at home on December 4 after living with cancer for three years. She was 69. Born on April 2, 1941, Sue was the third child of John ‘Chappie’ and Joyce Northrop of Enosburg Falls, Vermont. She graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1959, from Keuka College in 1963, and received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Hawaii. Sue and Doug McPherson married in 1967 and moved to Hawaii that year. They lived and raised their daughters there until 1987, when they returned to the mainland, living first in Colorado and then Utah. They loved the mountains, skiing in winter and hiking and camping at Moab and Zion in the summer. In July this year, Sue and Doug moved to Pacific Palisades to be nearer their daughters and to once again enjoy the ocean. Sue is survived by her husband of 43 years, Douglas McPherson; two daughters, Errin of Pacific Palisades and Christina of Captain Cook, Hawaii; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Donna Northrop of Lisbon, New Hampshire; and two sisters, Sally Pederson of Boston, Massachusetts, and Mary Northrop of Littleton, New Hampshire. Sue was a gifted athlete, an outspoken proponent for peace and justice, and a passionate liberal well-known to newspaper editors far and wide. Her strength and spirit live on in her two beautiful daughters.

David M. Clement, 70; Physicist, Teacher, Democratic Club Leader

David Manion Clement, beloved husband of Alice Clement and father of Elizabeth Clement and Alexandra Clement Wanigatunga, died December 15 at his home in Pacific Palisades, 23 months after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He was 70 years old.   Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, David graduated from Central Catholic High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University on a full scholarship in physics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in theoretical nuclear physics in 1967. An active learner all his life, he earned certificates in archeology, engineering, humanities and ancient history at UCLA.   After David and Alice moved to California, he held post-docs at UC Davis and UCLA. They moved to Pacific Palisades in 1970 and, in 1974, bought a home on Swarthmore Avenue, where they lived ever since.   In 1973, David went to work as a systems engineer at TRW. He published numerous papers and won several awards in physics and engineering. In 1993, he left TRW and taught physics and math at Santa Monica, Long Beach, El Camino and Cerritos community colleges until his retirement in 2007. He loved teaching, particularly at the community college level, because he felt that California’s diverse working-class communities needed help working toward their family and individual American dreams.   Always interested in politics and appalled by the Holocaust, David believed that citizens of all religions and races needed to organize locally and take responsibility for the actions of their government. As a result, he served on the board of the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club and was elected president for 9 years in the 1990s. He followed high politics like a true partisan sports fan, and worked hard all his life to encourage his fellow citizens to find progressive and humane responses to the pressing issues that confront our democracy.   David’s interests ranged from hiking and camping, to archeology, ancient and medieval history, modern politics and, of course, his beloved physics. He adored California because of its liberal politics and beautiful and diverse landscapes. He and his family vacationed in the National Parks most of his life, hiking and biking and attending ranger shows. He loved to travel with his family, especially to anywhere that had ancient Greek and Roman ruins.   A truly cerebral guy, David could often be found sitting in the midst of children and adults (his ‘bunnies’), with a pencil in hand, calculating the equations that explained gravity and quantum field theory, or reading ‘Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces.’   David is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alice; his daughter Elizabeth and her partner Kellie Custin and their three-year-old daughter Rosalie May Clement; his daughter Alexandra and her husband Rhush Wanigatunga and their daughters Araliya, age three, and Amaya, age twelve weeks; his sister Marian Clement and her sons Brian and Daniel Wright; and his sister Audrey Clement.   Donations can be made on his behalf to Move On, the Sierra Club or the L.A. Food Bank.   A memorial service is being planned; date, time and place to be announced.

Herb Allen, 90; Longtime Tennis Stalwart at Riviera

Herb Allen, a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades and avid tennis player, passed away on December 14 at the ripe old age of 90.   He was born in Bethany, Missouri, on July 13, 1920, and from an early age his unique sharp intelligence and sense of humor were obvious and would remain part of his persona for the rest of his life.   After an adventurous road trip across the country in a 1938 Buick convertible coupe, Herb landed in Los Angeles and enrolled in Glendale Junior College, later transferring to UCLA, where he graduated in 1943.   After entering the Navy in 1944 and completing officer training, Lieutenant S.G. Herb Allen was assigned to the USS Isherwood. During battle in the South Pacific, his ship was attacked by a kamikaze suicide bomber, and he was severely injured. He then spent several years recovering in a U.S. Naval Hospital in Corona, California, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.   Herb’s innate optimism moved him on, and he married Anne Gillespie Allen (who preceded him in death), started an insurance career and had three daughters, Corie, Anne and Laurel.   He married Helen Reis Nielsen in 1973 and embraced her three children, Joan, Bill and Peter, with his very large heart over the past 37 years. He will also be sorely missed by his grandchildren, Reis, Tara, Steven, Hector, Ali and Joy.   All through his 40-year career as an insurance broker, Herb charmed clients and cultivated a multitude of friends, with a comical story behind many. He was a charter member of the Riviera Tennis Club and became a fixture at the courts, entertaining all with his love of the game.   Services were held at the Riviera on December 21. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Women’s All American Tennis Championships, hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club every October.

Violinist Joseph Gold Performs at Paul Revere

Former Santa Monica Canyon resident and Paul Revere student Joe Gold.
Former Santa Monica Canyon resident and Paul Revere student Joe Gold.

Violinist Joseph Gold returned to the Paul Revere Middle School stage in late October for an encore, albeit about 40 years later. The Paul Revere graduate, who was principal violinist in the school’s orchestra in 1960, gave a special free performance, accompanied by Debbie Dare (viola) and composer Jaume Torrent (guitarist).   After graduating from Palisades High in 1964, Gold received a degree in music and literature at USC, and then taught in the San Francisco public school system for 30 years. He now lives in Piedmont and performs internationally.   Two years ago, Gold, who still has friends and commercial property in Santa Monica Canyon, was driving by Revere and noticed that there was an upcoming concert. He attended, and afterwards introduced himself to Revere orchestra teacher Lara Jacques. He told her, ‘I used to be a student at Revere. I’m a violinist and would love to do something for the school.’ Jacques asked if he would play for the students; he agreed, came back and performed for the entire student body.   Returning this year with Dare and Torrent, Gold performed three shows for the music students at Revere. ‘He spoke to them about the history of the school, and how things were when he was here,’ Jacques told the Palisadian-Post.   Gold talked about his passion and the violinist Paganini, who invented and made famous techniques that are now known to every violinist, like pizzicato (plucking the strings with one’s fingers). The famed 18th-century violinist, who also played guitar, used his left hand for pizzicato.   Torrent and Gold performed, and eighth grader Matthew Stockman reported in the school’s newspaper, ‘The notes just flowed off the strings like water. It was quite spectacular.’   The feeling of admiration between performer and students was mutual. Gold told the Post, ‘The audiences were great and the kids asked good questions. If we can inspire them, we do a good job.’   The combination of guitar and violin seemed unlikely, but ‘is almost as good as violin and piano,’ Gold explained. ‘Since Paganini played both instruments, there is music composed specifically for those two instruments.’   A Barcelona violin shop owner introduced Gold to Torrent, who was director of the Barcelona Conservatory.   ’I picked up a piece of music that Torrent had composed, and I conducted and played it, while he played the guitar.’ Now fast friends, the two have since toured many times in the United States and Europe. One problem that Gold sees with current conservatory students is the sameness with which they play their music. ‘Everything is homogenized,’ he said. ‘You have to learn certain principles of art, but then you have to be encouraged to develop your own personality. Right now there is a sameness of interpretation.’   Jacques, who has 60 students in beginning orchestra, 70 in advanced orchestra, 74 in senior orchestra, 71 in beginning strings, 68 in symphony orchestra and 24 in chamber orchestra, is working to instill her students with the principles.   ’Revere’s reputation as a serious music school is increasing,’ Jacques said. ‘More parents want their kids to come here for the music program.’   Jacques also believes that the subject is important on a broader level because musicians must use both sides of their brains, making them more mentally flexible. Additionally, she stresses the team aspect of an orchestra: ‘A team is only as good as the weakest player. What a student does matters, even if you’re only one person in a big group.’ Praising Gold, Jacques said, ‘He’s been able to travel, tell stories and is really quite wonderful. I hope he comes back.’ Equally impressed, Gold told the Post in November, ‘I went to school in the heyday of public education, but it is impressive what is going on down there now. The quality of teaching is high.’

PaliHi Band Finishes Strong

Palisades Charter High School Band placed first in the visual category (individual excellence in marching) and second overall in the LAUSD Championship Marching Band Competition on December 11. Van Nuys High School took first at the event held at East Los Angeles College.   ’Van Nuys is the perennial winner in 2A division (51 to 70 members) at LAUSD Championships,’ said PaliHi marching band instructor Arwen Hernandez. ‘We beat them at Granada, but knew that they would be working hard going into championships. In the end, their maturity and experience won out.’   The PaliHi band has nine graduating seniors and 25 freshmen. Hernandez started the program four years ago, and this was the third year the band competed, winning the Sweepstakes Crown title at the Highlander Marching Band Competitions in Granada Hills in November. This was also the first year that the band featured a color guard.   ’This year’s seniors were freshmen when I started at Pali,’ Hernandez said. ‘I am sorry to see our last marching season together end. They have proven to be amazing leaders and examples. They are outnumbered by lower classmen and work very hard to help provide the structure our many sophomores and freshmen need.’   Paul Revere Middle School band director Yosuki Miyoshi prepares his students for the PaliHi music program and Hernandez expects that the incoming freshman will push the band into the 3A division (71 to 90).   Hernandez noted that she was happy with Pali’s finish this year and pleased with her students.   ’They understand that an excellent live performance is the end goal, and they certainly achieved that,’ she said. ‘I am especially proud of how supportive they are of one another and of their self-discipline. We had two fire drills during class last week [students are evacuated to the football field], and the band and guard did not waste a second of rehearsal time. They cleaned the trash off the field and were back at it within minutes.’   The design team of Hernandez, Miyoshi, PaliHI percussion instructor Jeremy Miller and marching instructor Sean McDermott is working to finalize the spring drum-line show, titled ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms,’ which will feature Chinese drums and flute. The backdrops and floor are being designed and painted by PaliHi AP studio art students. The musicians will perform in a series of shows throughout Southern California.   Donations are still sought to purchase additional instruments. Checks can be made out to Palisades Charter High School (write ‘marching band’ in the memo) and mailed to the school c/o Arwen Hernandez, 15777 Bowdoin St. Pacific Palisades, CA. 90272.

Boys Soccer Beats University

By JAYANT SUBRAHMANYAM Special to the Palisadian-Post Two weeks into the season the Palisades High boys’ varsity soccer team is undefeated and showing signs that it could advance deep into the City Section playoffs. After eight games the Dolphins are 5-0-3 but head coach Dave Suarez thinks there is room for improvement. “I feel we can be a very good team with some adjustments,” Suarez said. “Mentally we need to be more responsible and we need to possess the ball more, but we definitely have talent.” Palisades put its undefeated record on the line against L.A. University last Friday night at Stadium by the Sea. Tempers flared throughout the game but the Dolphins prevailed over their Western League rivals, 3-1. Captain Shane Centkowski scored within the first five minutes to put Palisades ahead, 1-0. Several minutes later, forward Steve Diaz had a chance to pad the Dolphins’ lead but got his feet tangled on a breakaway. Palisades continued to threaten University’s defense and, after a well-placed through ball from Centkowski, midfielder Kyle Warner shot the ball just over the crossbar from outside the penalty area. Then, in the span of approximately a minute, both teams scored. Palisades struck first when right fullback David Joy curled a free kick into the bottom left corner of the goal from 30 yards out with 20 minutes left in the first half. However, shortly after University’s subsequent kickoff, midfielder Jason Rustrian took a similar identical shot from almost the same distance and found the bottom right corner of the goal to pull the Wildcats back within a goal, 2-1. Five minutes later Palisades’ ever-threatening front line struck again, as Diaz calmly converted a breakaway, and the Dolphins took a 3-1 lead into halftime. Instead of cooling off during the 10-minute rest period, Palisades players appeared to get more heated, as several received yellow cards and warnings from the referee for dangerous tackles and unsportsmanlike conduct. In a five-minute span two Dolphins were sent off for straight red cards. First, Warner was ejected for fighting with a Uni player after it appeared he was stepped on. Shortly thereafter, defender Brian Escalona was also sent off for cursing in front of the referee. There was very little in the way of goal scoring opportunities and shots on goal in the second half as the two teams continued to battle in a physical affair. Another fight nearly broke out before intervention by the referee and it seemed that every other minute, right up until the end of the match, players on both teams were being whistled for fouls and written in the referee’s book. The Dolphins were at least able to come away with a victory in a tough league contest, but Suarez had mixed feelings about his team’s performance: “I thought we played well in the first half, but in the second half we got caught up trying to prove ourselves as men instead of trying to win the game.” Nevertheless, Suarez recognized the importance of racking up victories at home, because the Stadium by the Sea’s smooth, artificial turf is conducive to slick passing and build-up play that isn’t as easy on dirt fields like all of Palisades’ league opponents have. “Uni was our biggest challenge, but we still have to face them at their place,” Suarez said. “Venice and Hamilton will be tests also.” Palisades played at LACES on Wednesday (result undetermined at press time) and now takes a month -long hiatus for winter break before returning to action January 12 at Venice. “We have some maturing to do,” Suarez said. “Defensively we’re good, but we’re picking up too many cards because we’re not mentally focused.”

Pali Hoops Squads Hit Road

Playing as tough a schedule as any team in Southern California has its pros and cons. The positive side is that the Palisades High boys’ basketball team is toughening up for the Western League, where it will twice have to play against perennial City Section powers Westchester and Fairfax as well as a seemingly much-improved University squad. The negative side is that the Dolphins are off to a 3-5 start, despite the first four of their being by a combined 13 points. After opening the season 1-3 at the Redondo Tournament the team went 2-2 at last week’s Santa Monica Tournament, losing to Rialto Eisenhower and Torrance Bishop Montgomery but beating Reseda Cleveland and Gardena Serra convincingly. Donovan Johnson had 28 points in the Dolphins’ 91-88 loss to Rialto Eisenhower and he leads the team with an average of almost 16 points per game while Ilya Ilyayev is averaging almost nine rebounds. Palisades begins league play today at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, then travels south for the San Diego Lincoln Tournament, where it opens Saturday against Golden of Colorado. A tough schedule is also benefiting the girls’ varsity team, which is off to a 6-2 start after going 2-2 at last week’s Mater Dei Tournament. The Dolphins suffered their first defeat last Monday at the hands of Santa Ana Mater Dei, one of the top-ranked teams in the nation. They bounced back to beat Ontario Colony and Mayfair, but their fourth-quarter rally fell one point short against Warren last Friday. Donae Moguel is averaging over 14 points per game and Asia Smith is averaging over 10 rebounds. Palisades leaves Friday for the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, where it will open against Fairfield Vanden on Saturday.

At Their Best in Prime Time

Palisades High football players could have been slept in last weekend, resting on their laurels after completing a Cinderella season in which the Dolphins reached the City Section Division II semifinals. So why did running back Malcolm Creer, center Jeffrey Gaskin and five other players rise early and travel to Palms Middle School? It is because they are members of the local high school’s Team Prime Time Club. The football players, along with eight other PaliHi athletes, were coaching kids with developmental disabilities at the ‘Prime Time Games.’ On the field at Stadium by the Sea, Creer may be one of the stars, but at Palms on Saturday he was shining the spotlight on the developmentally disabled athletes who were participating in the competition. Trading the turf for the hardwood, Creer and teammates Hakeem Jawanza, Elmer Garcia, Kolmus Iheanacho, Mylz Blake and Eusibio Hoskins made crisp passes to athletes with Autism and Down syndrome, setting them up for breakaway shots or three-pointers. Putting his blocking talents to good use, Gaskin blocked while a TPT athlete slid in successfully for a layup, then gave him a high-five. Not to be outdone by the football team, volleyball players Jayenth Subrahmanyam and Jack Scharf, varsity soccer captain Kathryn Gaskin and junior varsity soccer players Elizabeth and Emma Seaman were also sharing laughs and encouragement with the Prime Time Game athletes. Also participating were Danny Escalante, Nick Jaffe and Rico Matheney representing respectively the track, lacrosse, and basketball teams. Since sixth grade, the Gaskin siblings have been volunteering and recruiting others for Team Prime, a nonprofit after-school program operating at four middle schools on the Westside offering athletic, academic and artistic programs. The organization serves approximately 700 at risk 6th- through 8th-graders per day and pairs them as mentors with young athletes with developmental disabilities. Jeff Gaskin, President and founder of the Team Prime Time Club, which was organized to support Team Prime Time with student volunteers, had no trouble convincing his teammates and friends to participate. Several times a year the program holds the Prime Time Games for athletes with Developmental Disabilities. Middle school students enrolled in the Team Prime Time after-school program coach and mentor the developmentally disabled youth in a morning of basketball, soccer and other athletic games. In June, the games are held at UCLA, where UCLA football players lend their talents to the Games. Donations to Team Prime Time can be made at www.teamprimetime.org.

Elander Paces Pali Soccer

Senior Samantha Elander scored four goals as the Palisades High girls’ soccer team routed host L.A. University last Friday in a Western League game. Marika Lundeberg scored the other goal for the Dolphins. Two days earlier the Dolphins blanked visiting Westchester 10-0 in the league opener for both schools. Goalie Kiki Bailey got the shutout and netted a goal herself. Katie Van Daalan Wetters scored three goals, Meredith Kornfeind had two and Elander, Jacklyn Bamberger, Deborah Abber and Grady Gitlin each added one for the Dolphins. Elander had a three-goal game and Bailey did not allow a goal in three games during Palisades’ Holiday Winter December 3-4. Palisades suffered its first loss, 1-0, to Woodland Hills Taft on Monday night at Stadium by the Sea, but bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. Eve Babcock scored the only goal of the first half but the Dolphins (6-1-1) exploded for five goals after intermission en route to a 6-1 victory. Elander scored twice, Lily McGuire and Zoie Aliado added one apiece and Babcock scored her second goal to round out the scoring.
