Pali Hoops Squads Hit Road

Playing as tough a schedule as any team in Southern California has its pros and cons. The positive side is that the Palisades High boys’ basketball team is toughening up for the Western League, where it will twice have to play against perennial City Section powers Westchester and Fairfax as well as a seemingly much-improved University squad. The negative side is that the Dolphins are off to a 3-5 start, despite the first four of their being by a combined 13 points. After opening the season 1-3 at the Redondo Tournament the team went 2-2 at last week’s Santa Monica Tournament, losing to Rialto Eisenhower and Torrance Bishop Montgomery but beating Reseda Cleveland and Gardena Serra convincingly. Donovan Johnson had 28 points in the Dolphins’ 91-88 loss to Rialto Eisenhower and he leads the team with an average of almost 16 points per game while Ilya Ilyayev is averaging almost nine rebounds. Palisades begins league play today at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, then travels south for the San Diego Lincoln Tournament, where it opens Saturday against Golden of Colorado. A tough schedule is also benefiting the girls’ varsity team, which is off to a 6-2 start after going 2-2 at last week’s Mater Dei Tournament. The Dolphins suffered their first defeat last Monday at the hands of Santa Ana Mater Dei, one of the top-ranked teams in the nation. They bounced back to beat Ontario Colony and Mayfair, but their fourth-quarter rally fell one point short against Warren last Friday. Donae Moguel is averaging over 14 points per game and Asia Smith is averaging over 10 rebounds. Palisades leaves Friday for the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, where it will open against Fairfield Vanden on Saturday.

At Their Best in Prime Time

Palisades High football players could have been slept in last weekend, resting on their laurels after completing a Cinderella season in which the Dolphins reached the City Section Division II semifinals. So why did running back Malcolm Creer, center Jeffrey Gaskin and five other players rise early and travel to Palms Middle School? It is because they are members of the local high school’s Team Prime Time Club. The football players, along with eight other PaliHi athletes, were coaching kids with developmental disabilities at the ‘Prime Time Games.’ On the field at Stadium by the Sea, Creer may be one of the stars, but at Palms on Saturday he was shining the spotlight on the developmentally disabled athletes who were participating in the competition. Trading the turf for the hardwood, Creer and teammates Hakeem Jawanza, Elmer Garcia, Kolmus Iheanacho, Mylz Blake and Eusibio Hoskins made crisp passes to athletes with Autism and Down syndrome, setting them up for breakaway shots or three-pointers. Putting his blocking talents to good use, Gaskin blocked while a TPT athlete slid in successfully for a layup, then gave him a high-five. Not to be outdone by the football team, volleyball players Jayenth Subrahmanyam and Jack Scharf, varsity soccer captain Kathryn Gaskin and junior varsity soccer players Elizabeth and Emma Seaman were also sharing laughs and encouragement with the Prime Time Game athletes. Also participating were Danny Escalante, Nick Jaffe and Rico Matheney representing respectively the track, lacrosse, and basketball teams. Since sixth grade, the Gaskin siblings have been volunteering and recruiting others for Team Prime, a nonprofit after-school program operating at four middle schools on the Westside offering athletic, academic and artistic programs. The organization serves approximately 700 at risk 6th- through 8th-graders per day and pairs them as mentors with young athletes with developmental disabilities. Jeff Gaskin, President and founder of the Team Prime Time Club, which was organized to support Team Prime Time with student volunteers, had no trouble convincing his teammates and friends to participate. Several times a year the program holds the Prime Time Games for athletes with Developmental Disabilities. Middle school students enrolled in the Team Prime Time after-school program coach and mentor the developmentally disabled youth in a morning of basketball, soccer and other athletic games. In June, the games are held at UCLA, where UCLA football players lend their talents to the Games. Donations to Team Prime Time can be made at www.teamprimetime.org.

Elander Paces Pali Soccer

Senior Samantha Elander scored four goals as the Palisades High girls’ soccer team routed host L.A. University last Friday in a Western League game. Marika Lundeberg scored the other goal for the Dolphins. Two days earlier the Dolphins blanked visiting Westchester 10-0 in the league opener for both schools. Goalie Kiki Bailey got the shutout and netted a goal herself. Katie Van Daalan Wetters scored three goals, Meredith Kornfeind had two and Elander, Jacklyn Bamberger, Deborah Abber and Grady Gitlin each added one for the Dolphins. Elander had a three-goal game and Bailey did not allow a goal in three games during Palisades’ Holiday Winter December 3-4. Palisades suffered its first loss, 1-0, to Woodland Hills Taft on Monday night at Stadium by the Sea, but bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. Eve Babcock scored the only goal of the first half but the Dolphins (6-1-1) exploded for five goals after intermission en route to a 6-1 victory. Elander scored twice, Lily McGuire and Zoie Aliado added one apiece and Babcock scored her second goal to round out the scoring.

Palisades Charter High School will turn 50 years old in 2011, and various festivities are planned from July 2011 to June 2012.   ’There is a lot to love and to remember about Pali,’ said Rich Wilken, a 1964 graduate who is co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee with PaliHi parent Pati Vining.   The committee, comprising alumni, teachers, classified staff, students and parents, formed last spring to plan the anniversary events.   Wilken, a lifelong Pacific Palisades resident, said the committee has established a tentative schedule of celebrations that kick off at the town’s annual Fourth of July parade. The school will have a float in the parade and a carnival on campus before the evening fireworks show.   In September, PaliHi will host ‘Rose Remembers,’ an evening with legendary English teacher Rose Gilbert, who has worked at the school since it opened in 1961.   At the end of October, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating PaliHi’s 1961 dedication ceremony. The time capsule that was sealed behind a plaque at Mercer Hall during that dedication ceremony will be removed. Among the items sealed in the capsule are the names of the 1961 students, a copy of the student handbook and graduation requirements, and two copies of the Palisadian-Post, containing articles that record the first couple of weeks of the high school’s existence.   ’We will add items to the capsule throughout the school year,’ Wilken said, noting that the capsule will be resealed in June 2012.   The current students will make a 15-minute video on the history of the high school for the capsule. The leadership class is also compiling historical data such as the names of all the school’s former teachers, elected student officials and team captains.   During the month of January 2012, the school will host a ’60s decade alumni event, inviting Michael Medved and David Wallechinsky to present selected readings from their book, ‘What Really Happened to the Class of ’65.’ The book, which is a series of interviews with their classmates 10 years after graduation, was adapted into a television series of the same name that aired on NBC in 1977-78.   There will also be a car show and dance for current students and alumni. In addition, the current students will be encouraged to dress up in clothing from the ’60s as part of a fashion day.   From February to May, there will be alumni events for the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s that all include a fashion day, car show, dance and featured speakers. Those events will be followed by a ‘super-reunion’ in June 2012 for all alumni.   ’We want to highlight the achievements of the school over each decade and the accomplishments of the alumni, whether it be in the world of science, education, entertainment, creative arts or industry,’ Wilken said.   Some famous PaliHi graduates include rapper Will.i.am (William James Adams), actor Forest Whitaker, retired NBA player Steve Kerr, professional golfer Amy Alcott and ‘the Zone diet’ creator Dr. Barry Sears. Wilken said that the goal is to reconnect graduates to the school. ‘We hope they will share their talents by visiting a classroom or becoming mentors to students,’ Wilken said, noting that financial contributions would also be appreciated.   The committee wanted a logo to use on printed material and apparel to publicize the 50th anniversary, so in June it hosted a contest and received 30 submissions.   PaliHi parent Gerry Wallace won for his logo of a dolphin diving through the numeral 50. The logo reads, ‘Pali, 1961-2011, Celebrating Fifty Years of Pali Pride.’   ’We had a lot of really terrific entries, so it was difficult to choose,’ said Jill Barker, a 50th-anniversary committee member, PaliHi counselor and 1978 alumna.   Wallace, who lives in Mar Vista Hills, has worked as a self-employed graphic designer since retiring from a 30-year career in broadcast journalism in 1998. He is the art director for the Wisconsin Energy Corporation, laying out its magazine and maintaining three Web sites.   He learned graphic design while working as a weather forecaster at KOVR in Sacramento in the early 1980s, when the television station was starting to use digital graphics to present the weather.   ’I was flying by the seat of my pants, learning to design maps,’ Wallace said. ‘I got hooked on it, and I knew it was something I wanted to do.’   Wallace and his wife, Teri-Rae Elmer, have two children who attend PaliHi, Julia (a senior), and Christian (a sophomore). He received an e-mail from PaliHi soliciting entries for the contest and decided to submit four slightly different designs.   ’I based it on their previous logos and updated it,’ Wallace said.   His logo is featured on T-shirts, a hoodie and basic tote bag, which can be purchased at www.b1selfshop.com/pchs/pali-50th. Twenty percent of the sales will support the events planned. Committee members are also contacting local organizations and businesses to help defray expenses.   The PaliHi Web site (palihigh.enschool.org) has a direct link to ‘Pali 50th’ where people can find updated information about the events planned. Information is also available on the Pali High 50th Anniversary Facebook page.   Donations to underwrite the costs of ‘Pali 50th’ events should be sent to Palisades Charter High School, Pali 50th Committee, 15777 Bowdoin St., Pacific Palisades, CA 90272. Councilman Rosendahl Hires Two New Aides

Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl recently hired Joaquin Macias to serve as his new field deputy and Tony Arranaga as his communications director.   Macias replaces Jessyca Avalos, who began training with the Los Angeles Police Academy last month. Avalos told the Palisadian-Post that she has enjoyed working for Rosendahl for the past two years, but she wanted to pursue a different career path.   As field deputy, Macias, 36, will serve as Rosendahl’s liaison with the residents and organizations in Pacific Palisades, Brentwood and Santa Monica Canyon in District 11. Before accepting the position, Macias worked in Council District 2 as a field deputy under Wendy Greuel and Paul Krekorian.   ’Joaquin is extremely professional and engaged in the community, and I’m delighted to have him join the team,’ Rosendahl said.   Arranaga, 40, will assume Nate Kaplan’s former role of interfacing with print and broadcast media. Kaplan is now a field deputy, serving as an intermediary between Rosendahl and residents of Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista.   Most recently, Arranaga worked for Tony Felice PR & Marketing in Phoenix, Arizona as a new media advisor, where he helped businesses with online branding.   ’One of my responsibilities as an elected official is to communicate with my constituents in multifaceted ways,’ Rosendahl said. ‘Tony is perfect for the role of communications director. He brings decade-plus experience as a multimedia journalist.’   Arranaga graduated from Miraleste High School in Palos Verdes and earned his degree in journalism and political science from the University of Arizona. He has worked as a television reporter for Six News Now in Sarasota, Florida; Bay News 9 in Tampa, Florida; Cox Broadcasting in Washington, D.C.; and ABC affiliate KNXV in Phoenix. He has also written a blog about the Phoenix light rail and car-free experience.   Born and raised in L.A., Arranaga said he applied for the job because he wanted to return to the area.   '[Rosendahl] is great. He is the same person behind the scenes as he is in public. The whole office has been welcoming,’ Arranaga said. ‘It’s been fun, interesting and fast-paced.’ As field deputy for Council District 2, Macias spent five years working on residents’ issues in North Hollywood and Sun Valley. He dealt with public safety and quality-of-life issues such as illegal dumping and graffiti. Macias helped organize community events, set up neighborhood watches and started programs at local schools.   He believes the skills he gained from that job will be advantageous in his current position. For one, ‘I can help residents navigate through the city bureaucracy.’   Macias plans to educate residents on the appropriate city departments to contact for assistance. He will encourage them to follow up on their complaints with those departments and to engage their neighbors because their issue could affect the entire neighborhood.   While Macias intends to make sure city departments are not ignoring residents’ complaints, he said the public should be aware that the city has laid off thousands of employees, which has affected basic services.   ’The response time may be longer than what people would like,’ Macias said. ‘What might have taken two to three days may now take two to three weeks.’   A graduate of Loyola High School, Macias earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cal State Northridge. After graduation, he worked as a researcher for the UCLA Center for Culture & Health and as a childcare worker in group-homes.   He decided to take the field deputy job in Council District 2 after serving on the Reseda Neighborhood Council. He owns a home in Reseda with his wife, LeiLani Lemle-Macias, and they have four children.   ’I have always been interested in politics and government,’ Macias said. In college, he served as the associate student body president and interned for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was then speaker of the state assembly.   Since joining Rosendahl’s staff, Macias has already started to work on expediting a traffic signal at Los Liones Drive and Sunset Boulevard near the Waldorf School and the realignment of the traffic light at nearby Vons at Castellammare Drive.   ’I have hit the ground running,’ Macias said. ‘There is plenty to work on.’   Community members can contact Macias with their concerns or issues at Joaquin.Macias@lacity.org.

Council Honors Andy Frew, Hofers at Year-End Meeting

The Pacific Palisades Community Council held its annual holiday potluck dinner meeting last Thursday the historic dining hall in Temescal Gateway Park.   Community Service Awards (given out since 1996) were presented to Andrew Frew and Sigrid and Arnold Hofer, after which more than 55 Council members, family members and friends were entertained by actor/singer Michael Dunn, who portrayed Charles Dickens. PPCC Chair Janet Turner presented the awards to Frew and the Hofers.   ’He [Frew] spends most weekends behind the light and sound board at Pierson Playhouse,’ Turner said. ‘He works on all the Theatre Palisades plays and the Chamber’s Teen Pageant each year. He also loves movies and was one of the founders of Movies in the Park.   ’In television where I work, when people start to take it too seriously we often say, ‘It’s not brain surgery.’ Well, in Andy’s case it is brain surgery, because he’s a neuroscientist at UCLA and in his lab he makes three-dimensional maps of the brain that guide surgeons when removing brain tumors.’   Turner noted that the Hofers have tackled 30 years of tedious chores at Palisades Symphony and Theatre Palisades, like mailings with announcements, requests for donations and thank-you cards.   ’Sigrid sings with the Brentwood-Palisades Chorale, like the Brahms ‘Requiem’ and Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ and always played classical music at the family’s home in the Alphabet Streets, leading her son Manfred to confide that he didn’t know what rock-and-roll was until he was in seventh grade.’   Turner called Arnold Hofer the ‘stealth fixer’ because whenever something needs to be repaired at Pierson Playhouse, the retired tool-and-die maker ‘slips in to fix what needs to be fixed and then slips out.’   Norm Kulla, Councilman Bill Rosendahl’s senior deputy, presented special certificates to the Hofers and Frew.   ’They make Pacific Palisades a better place,’ Kulla said. ‘Ordinary residents like these are also extraordinary because without their volunteer efforts, towns like this don’t exist.’   Michael Dunn amused the audience, inquiring ‘How many of you came to a complete cessation of movement at the stop sign?’ He told them if they received a $175 ticket at the camera-enforced intersection inside Temescal Gateway Park, there was a bright side. ‘Congratulations, you are now in the movies’a straight-to-video release starring you is now making its way to a big-screen TV.’   Dunn made several 2011 predictions for the Council and its members.   ’Traffic congestion on Pacific Coast Highway from the new sewer project and [later] the California Incline replacement will be so horrific that George Wolfberg will propose that the highway be closed permanently and converted into a world-class six-lane bike path.’   Dunn also prophesized that Barbara Kohn will become a local hero after being arrested for vandalizing the massive new statute of Joe Edmiston in Temescal Park upon learning that it had been secretly converted into a cell-phone tower.   He predicted the Council would issue an appeal to the City requesting a special fund to treat the carpal tunnel syndrome suffered by new Council member Jennifer Malaret after endless hours of typing Jack Allen’s PDFs into Word format.   Dunn closed his performance with a song performed to ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ including the stanza ‘Bel-Air can boast of wealthy folks/Safe behind their iron gates/But friendly hearts and shady oaks/Fill the peaceful Palisades.’

Janet Salaff, 69; Author, Sociologist

By DEBBIE PARDUCCI Special to the Palisadian-Post Last February 19 at Village Books, professor Janet Salaff was honored at a crowded signing for her latest book, ‘Movers and Stayers: Narratives of Hong Kong Migration,’ written in collaboration with her Norwegian husband, Arent Greve, and Siu-lun Wong.   The affair was arranged by Janet’s 94-year-old mother, revered Palisadian Lillian Weitzner, a child analyst and longtime active participant in water aerobics at the once and future pool in Temescal Canyon.   Janet returned in July for her mother’s 95th birthday after she and her husband traveled to Argentina to study and practice the tango. Like her mother, who danced in her youth with Martha Graham, Janet was a gifted dancer. She was due to return in mid-December to celebrate her own 70th birthday. Instead, there will be a memorial for Janet, celebrating her rich life, on Sunday, December 19, at 12:30 p.m. in Pacific Palisades.   On November 12, Janet met with sociologist friends and colleagues for a postretirement reunion near the University of Toronto, where she had been a professor for 35 years. Amidst gaiety and good cheer, Janet suddenly stood up, silent, alerting people to a problem. She was choking on a piece of meat. Neither Heimlich maneuvers nor efforts by paramedics could save her life. Her husband, her mother Lillian, her daughter Shana, her brother Chip and his wife Eileen were with her at the end.   Professor Salaff was a sociologist specializing in China. She divided her time between the University of Toronto and Hong Kong University. The best-known of her many published works is ‘The Working Girls of Hong Kong,’ a classic in its field. Another book, ‘Cowboys and Cultivators,’ received this praise from Myron Cohen of Columbia University: ‘At long last, a book that does credit to the formidable management skills of ordinary Chinese’that provides a corrective to the image of the tradition bound and primordial peasant which continues to dominate much of the current literature.’   Metta Spence, a friend and colleague, said of Janet, ‘She was one of the liveliest, most curious, and open-minded people I’ve ever known.’ Like mother, like daughter.   Sunday’s memorial will be held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Allen Parducci, 335 Beirut Ave. Lillian Weitzner’s friends are organizing a potluck. For more information, please call Cindy Kelly at (310) 454-2517.
