Crayon Collection, founded by Highlands resident Sheila Morovati, recently hosted its sixth annual Arts Education for All Luncheon at Nobu in Malibu after a two-year hiatus, raising more than $100,000. The sold-out event honored Christine Simmons, COO of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Keishia Gu, director of education for Getty Museum.
“Crayon Collection is a nonprofit that works with restaurants, hotels and community groups to collect gently used and new crayons, and redistributes them to children in need, along with art education curriculum that meets national school standards,” according to a statement about the event. “Proceeds from the luncheon will help provide arts programming to students in Title 1 schools and community centers in underserved neighborhoods in Los Angeles and beyond.”

The Sons of the American Legion – Squadron 283 hosted a meeting at Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church as part of its Living History Series.
The evening featured 97-year-old Karl Wozniak, a German Jew who left Germany for Poland, escaped Poland and fought with the Soviets against Nazi Germany, member Richard Lombari explained: “After the war, he made it to Israel, helped to liberate Israel and was a paratrooper for the Israeli Army.”

Maryam Zar has taken on the role of Palisades-Malibu YMCA board chair.
“I undertake this role with great humility as I look back at chairs before me and their considerable impact on the board and community,” Zar shared in a statement.
Looking to the future, Zar said she hopes to “build our formidable board by bringing on new people with various interests in our diverse Y programming, and a commitment to bringing new ideas forward for discussion and implementation.”
