Since the week before Thanksgiving, Los Angeles residents have had the chance to spend their weekends searching for various books hidden at locations across the City of Angels—including some in Pacific Palisades.
The idea behind the LA Book Scavenger Hunt by Morphkey, a website where users chat with others about books, music and film over audio and video calls, was to provide a fun, outdoor activity to keep people of all ages engaged during the pandemic when much of the city has been closed and people need to maintain social distance. It was especially geared toward college students forced to pursue their studies from home during COVID-19.
Many families and individuals have looked forward to the scavenger hunt on weekends. Organizers have changed locations every week in order to introduce participants to a wide array of LA neighborhoods.
Novels by well-known authors such as Argentine essayist Jorge Luis Borges, American philosopher Susan Sontag, Swiss writer Robert Walser, Japanese playwright KĹŤbĹŤ Abe, Brazilian poet Machado de Assis, Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann, Italian journalist Italo Calvino, Japanese writer Haruki Murakami and American poet George Oppen have been placed for discovery.
Among the spots in the Palisades where books were found so far were the El Medio Bluffs and local parks. Other areas where books have been hidden include Hollywood, Santa Monica, Echo Park, West LA, Mar Vista, Century City, Los Feliz, Westwood, Silver Lake, Brentwood, Hancock Park, Venice, Mid City, Atwater Village and downtown.
The books have been free for whoever found them during scavenger hunts that took place Saturday mornings.
Scavenger hunts are slated to resume throughout LA, weather permitting, as soon as this weekend.
