Palisades High soccer assistant coach Dave Suarez has given many inspiring halftime speeches, but none have resonated like the one he recited on behalf of former All-City player Shane Thomas at last Friday’s Senior Awards Banquet.
Thomas collapsed and died after a club team practice in August 2020. His parents John and Valerie subsequently established the Shane Thomas Character, Determination and Leadership Award in his memory and with it is a $500 scholarship. The first winner is senior midfielder Oliver Nelson.
“Oliver was chosen over many others because of his love and passion for the game, his ability to unite players together, his determination to return from an injury and his work with fellow players and coaches even though he was sidelined,” Suarez said. “He’s someone who cares more about the success of the program than himself.”
