Springtime means that the Santa Monica Oceanaires are back with their annual spring performance at 2 p.m. this Saturday, April 27, at Paul Revere Middle School’s auditorium, 1450 Allenford.
Under the direction of new leader Ben Lowe, the Oceanaires will perform a selection of the greatest songs from 75 years of barbershop music in the United States, which began in April 1938. Another high note for barbershop was when the Buffalo Bills quartet performed in the musical comedy and subsequent movie “The Music Man.”
The set list will include “Who Will Buy?” from the musical “Oliver,” the ballad “Daddy’s Little Girl,” “Old Cape Cod” and “Bye Bye Blackbird,” which was included on Paul McCartney’s 2012 album, “Kisses on the Bottom.”
Wally Mees, pastor of the Lutheran Church since 1982, is a member of the Oceanaires, as are Palisadians Alan Hanson (costumer for the group), Nick Allis, Bill Finlan and Frank DaVanzo.
Entertaining audiences for over 25 years, the Santa Monica Oceanaires men’s a capella chorus meets weekly to sing barbershop harmonies. The nonprofit group raises money for charities and community activities and is an official chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society and The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.
In addition to the chorus, the Oceanaires will present special guests “Tenacious Q,” a quartet that was voted “crowd pleaser” at a recent barbershop gathering. There will also be a raffle with prizes.
For tickets ($15), call (323) 247-SING or visit oceanaires.org. Tickets will also be available at the door.
