Newcomers and Friends of Pacific Palisades is a social group that helps neighbors to become friends through social gatherings and outings. You need not be a “newcomer” in town in order to join.
“Non-members are invited to join us when we tour Homeboy Industries on Friday, September 25,” said Jen Huntzicker, publicity chairman.
Homeboy Industries, founded in 1991 by Father Gregory Boyle, provides job training and social services for high-risk former gang members. Homeboy also offers a variety of services that include tattoo removal, mental health counseling, anger management, legal services and GED preparation.
The nonprofit’s most distinctive feature is its small business endeavors that give hard-to-place individuals an opportunity for employment in a safe and supportive environment. Homeboy has restaurants at City Hall and LAX as well as several additional businesses; its salsa and tortilla chips are now sold in Ralphs markets. Homeboy Industries has become the role model for similar groups across the country.
The Newcomers/Friends group will carpool from the Presbyterian Church parking lot (Sunset and El Medio) at 9:30 a.m. for the trip to the downtown headquarters of Homeboy.
The tour will be followed by lunch at its attached Homegirl Cafe. RSVP by September 22 to newcomersandfriendspp@gmail.com.
