The sun was bright, the sand was sandy, the waves were big, the water was cold, a perfect day for a swim. It was January 1st, NEW YEARS DAY!
A crowd of people (and many dogs) had gathered to partake in the 61st annual Venice Penguin Plunge. A swim organization known as SCAQ was sponsoring the event and their Penguin mascot Norky was there giving hugs and posing for photos.
The event began with a fun dip, where everyone ran into the water, splashed around and swam 50 yards. 4 young members of the Westside Aquatics swim club braved the icy waters.
Gabbie Brito and Lilly Gatto swam the 50 yard fun dip and Bella Brito and Izzy Montgomery swam the 400 yard open ocean competition. There were Lifeguards and volunteer surfers on hand to help the competitors if needed. Someone even brought hot chocolate and donuts as a reward for the hardworking swimmers when they passed through the finish line.
As we look forward to the coming year all in all, everyone had a fresh start and fun that morning on Venice beach. Happy New Year 2020!
