Rat Poison Found in Mountain Lions | Santa Monica Mountains
Two mountain lions found dead in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area show a trend of rat poisoning that is affecting wildlife in the area.
P-30, formerly a healthy 6-year-old male, became the fifth mountain lion to die from anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, according to National Park Service biologists in a statement.
Although P-53’s carcass was too decomposed to determine the cause of death, four different compounds of anticoagulant rodenticide were found in its liver.
“Just about every mountain lion we’ve tested throughout our study has had exposure to these poisons, generally multiple compounds and often at high levels,” said Seth Riley, an ecologist and wildlife branch chief for SMMNRA.
Since 2002, 23 out of 24 local mountains have tested positive for rat poison compounds, including a 3-month-old kitten.
