Gallery 169 Exhibition “Chromasketch” | Pacific Palisades
Gallery 169 will be hosting an artist opening reception for photographer Jonathan Bensimon’s show, “Chromasketch.”
Bensimon, who shot his last roll on film 10 years ago, was inspired by shooting on digital due to its capability of “endless shooting,” as well as the ability to edit one’s shots. “The Chromasketch project started as a way to explore my creative process and rekindle the passion I once had for the art,” Bensimon expressed. “The thrill of searching the world with a curious eye. In May 2015, I decided to go back to the twin-lens Rolleiflex, I learned on, as a teenager. In addition, I’d add some restrictions, or a framework to the process.”
Accumulating over 600 images each year, Bensimon, initially decided that when he had completed a shoot, he would share the images in “one giant backlit contact sheet,” thus displaying the good with the bad shots.
“I began to realize, what I felt made a powerful impression was juxtaposition. In the first year, it was something that I aspired to,” Bensimon shared. “but could only manage to do so by setting two images side by side. When I started to zone in on how to create that juxtaposition within a single frame the process started to become much more focused and inspired.”
The show’s opening reception will be showcased on Saturday, January 29, from 5 to 8 p.m.
