Palisades Montessori preschool students learned about King Tut, Cleopatra, the Sphinx and the Pyramids as part of the Yellow Room curriculum for two- and three-year-olds that also included learning about the United States and Australia. After a month-long study, the students performed for parents on March 22.
Parent Cori Cross described the day. “The decorations and costumes are so much fun and after the children’s show the parents sponsor belly dancers. Afterwards, all the families gather on the lawn with blankets for a picnic of wonderful Egyptian dishes such as couscous, hummus and baklava.
“It is amazing what the kids retain and understand, but through all the songs they learn and art projects they do they really get a sense of the culture and how it is different from ours,” Cross said. “Just the other day when I was at the park with my daughter Reagan, I asked her if she was making a sand castle. She said, ‘No, mommy, I am making a pyramid; we’re in Africa.’”
At the end of the school year, students take a “Trip Around the World.” Each family chooses a country and makes a poster of famous sites. The children then walk around to each country poster with a passport book and get it stamped.
The school is located at 16706 Marquez Ave.
