Pacific Palisades’ zip code, 90272, has one of the highest concentrations of non-profit organizations with revoked exempt statuses in Los Angeles County, according to data from the IRS.
The Palisadian-Post found more than 90 non-profit organizations in the 90272 zip code that were formed with Palisadian addresses but had their tax exempt status revoked by the IRS for failure to file Form 990-series returns or notices for three consecutive years.
Form 990 returns, which federal tax exempt organizations must file, provide information on the organizations’ mission, programs and finances, according to the IRS.
While the IRS data showed the historical date of each organization’s automatic revocation, it did not necessarily reflect the groups’ current tax-exempt or non-exempt statuses.
Groups may have filed for recognition exemption and may have been recognized by the IRS after the automatic revocation date was posted for the public.
The Pacific Palisades Garden Club, for instance, had its tax exempt status revoked on Nov. 15, 2010 but automatically applied for reinstatement and is currently recognized as a tax-exempt organization by the IRS.
Such organizations are eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions from the public.
Groups that have had their statuses revoked and have not filed for reinstatement include the Pacific Palisades Land Owners, revoked on Dec. 15, 2010; the Sage Foundation, revoked on May 15, 2010; Save the Coast Foundation, revoked on May 15, 2010; No Oil Inc., revoked on May 15, 2010 and many more.
However, the Palisades also had a large concentration of non-profit groups with recognized tax exemptions. Nearly 360 groups with listed Pacific Palisades addresses had tax-exemption statuses recognized by the IRS.
