On Wednesday, Sept. 7, fourth-grade students from Canyon Charter Elementary School visited La Señora Research Institute on Dryad Road in Santa Monica Canyon.
At the institute, we learned about the Marquez family land grant and their relationship to our school. We met Ernie Marquez and his son, who told us what life was like back when Canyon was a single-room schoolhouse. We also toured the grounds of the adobe house that was once a post office stagecoach stop.
We learned about GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and how it is being used to detect graves of the descendants of the Marquez family. We then visited the Marquez Family Cemetery on San Lorenzo and saw how they were trying to preserve the past.
We also got some wonderful Rancho Boca yellow caps.
It was great to learn about all the history in our backyard.
