One of the games within the game when Palisades played Harvard-Westlake on Thursday night was that between senior kickers Ethan Erickson and Matthew Glick. The two seniors played “Can you top this?” as they took turns booming kicks through the end zone for touchbacks for their respective football teams.
“I used to be right-footed, but Matt taught me how to kick left-footed in soccer,” said Erickson, regarded as the best kicker and punter in the City Section. “I really owe a lot to him.”
They attended Village School together growing up and met at midfield for a brief talk before Thursday’s game at Stadium by the Sea. Once it started, their childhood friendship was put on hold for a couple of hours.
Erickson, who has converted three of his six field goal tries this season and 17 of 18 extra points, made a career-best 43-yard field goal in Palisades’ 45-18 upset at Harvard-Westlake last season, but Glick came out the winner this time, booting a 40-yard field goal to give the Wolverines a 17-0 lead in the first quarter of their 37-21 victory.
Glick also plays soccer for Harvard-Westlake, where he started as a freshman, and in April he committed to play that sport at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, next year. He also plays club soccer for Santa Monica United.
