One of the highlights of Steve Kerr’s pro basketball career was playing on the 1996-96 Chicago Bulls team that set an NBA record with 72 regular season victories.

Kerr is now the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, who matched that feat Sunday by dealing San Antonio its first home loss and tried for win No. 73 in their season finale Wednesday against Memphis.
Although his team reeled off 24 consecutive victories to begin the season – the best start in NBA history – Kerr was recovering from two back surgeries. Since returning to the bench, the 1983 Palisades High graduate has guided Golden State to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, meaning the Warriors will enjoy homecourt advantage as they seek to defend their title.
Last season, Kerr became the NBA’s first rookie head coach to win 21 of his first 23 games and led Golden State to 67 regular-season wins (most all-time by a rookie coach). He grew up in the Palisades and played baseball and basketball at Pali High.
