The Palisades High junior varsity football team fought hard for four quarters in Friday afternoon’s Western League showdown against Fairfax and in the end the Dolphins fell one second short of victory.
Quarterback Paul Jacobs snuck across the goal line with one second left on the clock, Miguel Perez added the ensuing extra point and the visiting Lions held on to win 7-3 and stay in first place in league.

Tommy Meek kicked an 18-yard field goal just before halftime for the Dolphins’ only points.
“That team started 15 juniors and has given up one touchdown all season and we hung right with them,” Pali High coach Ray Marsden said. “The defense played awesome and the guys will be able to draw from this experience moving forward. We had a fumble at their 40 which cost us and they fumbled twice but recovered both. One bad punt and good field position, aided by a penalty, were the difference.”
Palisades had one last chance for a miracle after a kickoff out of bounds, but quarterback Jake Nadley couldn’t find an open receiver downfield and settled for a pass in the flat that the Lions stopped for a short gain.
Palisades (5-3, 2-1) stopped Fairfax inches from the goal line to win last year’s game, 18-16.
