Harvard-Westlake lost Thursday afternoon’s junior varsity football game 40-12 to Palisades, but a bright spot for the Wolverines was the play of Palisades resident James Kanoff, a sophomore receiver and defensive back.
If the last name rings a bell it’s because James’ older brother Chad was an All-CIF quarterback at Harvard-Westlake, throwing for 3,400 yards and 38 touchdowns his senior season.
Chad is now a sophomore quarterback at Princeton University, where he received the Donold B. Lourie Award as the school’s top offensive freshman. While his brother is mastering the art of throwing the ball, James’ specialty is catching it.
“I’ve always played receiver because I have gotten lots of practice catching my brother’s passes,” James said after Thursday’s game, in which he made several receptions — including a 15-yarder for the Wolverines’ first touchdown. “He’d throw to me all the time so that became my thing.”
James attended St. Matthew’s and grew up playing AYSO soccer, basketball at the Palisades Recreation Center, flag football and Pop Warner football in Santa Monica. He knows several Pali High players, including varsity backup quarterback Gabe Galef.
Four other Palisadians are on the Wolverines’ JV squad: freshman center Chance Washburn, junior running back/linebacker Andreas Werner, freshman offensive lineman Alex Reiner and freshman nose tackle Harry Garvey.
