The weather for the Brentwood School Cross Country Invitational last Saturday morning was hot and dry but Palisadian James Kahn took no notice.
When the race began, the Eagles’ junior sprinted to the front of the 200+ runner field and settled in with the lead group.

At the end of the first loop, the lead pack had been whittled down to five runners.
With one more loop to go on the hilly course, Kahn surged to the lead and crossed the finish line first in 16:32, six seconds ahead of runner-up James Smathers from Viewpoint.
“I didn’t expect that!” Brentwood School cross country coach David Foote said.
Summer track workouts with the Cal Coast Club, led by fellow Palisadian John Holcomb, and countless sunrise runs in the hills of Will Rogers State Historic Park paid dividends for Kahn, who topped a field of teams from Crossroads, Windward, Sage Hill, LACES, St. Monica, Pacifica Christian, Garey, Dorsey, Edgewood and Bellflower.
