Highlands residents are concerned that an area off of Palisades Drive is being used as an illegal dumping ground.
There have been multiple trucks coming in and using the site, according to a Highlands resident who asked not to be named. The trucks were seen as recently as Friday, Nov. 14.
One resident told the Palisadian-Post he confronted one of the truck drivers, who was acting strangely.
Photos obtained by the Post show at least two trucks using the location, which is just past Calvary Church on the west side of Palisades Drive.
Residents told the Post that the trucks they’ve seen are hard to identify. One truck appeared to have a logo including the words “Rock and Roll,” but they were partially worn off, a resident said.
Jolly Gissell, a Palisades resident who had heard about the problem, said he was concerned that the situation could get worse if it continues.
“Once one truck knows about it, the others follow,” Gissell said.
Property records show that the dumpsite is located on property belonging to the state. State agencies did not immediately comment on the situation.
According to state law, the penalty for illegal dumping on public and private property can be punishable by a fine up to a $10,000 and/or jail for up to six months.
Some neighbors said they have reported the situation, but the trucks have continued their nighttime runs.
Police say that for illegal dumping on vacant lots or “enforcement of dumping laws on lots or private property” residents can call the Bureau of Street Service Enforcement Division at (213) 847-6000 or after hours at (877) ASK-LAPD.
