Hidden Caf’ Displays Work by Russian Artists The community is invited to a reception to meet two Russian artists, view their work, and have the opportunity to make a purchase in time for the holiday season. The event takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 at the Hidden Cafe, 1515 Palisades Ave. in the Highlands. Among the artists featured is Igor Tolmachev, a Siberian photographer who has been praised by numerous European professional photographer associations. Living in modest conditions, Igor has no access to computers, so his art is created the old-fashioned way, without digital modification. Works on silk by St. Petersburg-native Tatiana Khmilinina will also be on view. These colorful pieces are an homage to her hometown. All the proceeds from the sale are going to support the Siberian artists who live under duress in a country that has undergone fundamental change. In the former Soviet Union, everyone made a meager but stable salary. Now, that the system has collapsed, everyone is expected to provide for himself, and artists, having few survival skills, are living in dire conditions. This exhibit is sponsored by musician and teacher Yuliya Barsky of Yuliyard Aesthetic Center. Barsky’s own watercolors, oils and pastels will be on view. During the reception, background music will be provided by her piano students.
