
Harvey Eugene Smith Sr., a former resident and business owner in Pacific Palisades, died peacefully at his home in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 11. He was 89. Harvey was born April 6, 1923 in Springdale, Arkansas, to Benjamin Franklin and Nora Etta Harp Smith. He lettered in football, basketball and track at Springdale High School and was captain of the 1940-1941 basketball team. Harvey graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in education and served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II. Stationed in Ellice Islands, Nanumea in the South Pacific and aboard the U.S.S Auburn (AGC-10), he served as a radar operator. The Auburn was involved in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In 1948, Harvey married Patricia A. Ware in Springdale. They moved to California and spent several years in the nursery and garden supply business at Palisades Garden Supply (founded in 1954). Harvey sold the business to employee Ray Logue in 1962 and returned with his wife to northwest Arkansas, where they raised their four children at Springbrook Farm in Fayetteville. Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, in 2003, as well as his two sisters (Ruby Smith and Maxine Smith Hill) and two brothers (Vernon Howard Smith and Richard F. Smith). He is survived by his daughter Cheryl K. Maples (husband Richard) of Heber Springs, his daughter Linda C. Smith of Fayetteville, his son Harvey E. Smith Jr. (Amy) of Fayetteville, his daughter Cynthia ‘Cindy’ McAnarney of Fayetteville, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services were held May 15 in Springdale with Rev. Nathan Mattox officiating, and Harvey was buried in Bluff Cemetery next to his beloved wife. His grandsons, Greg Smith, Darin Monroe, Ben Davis, Ryan McAnarney, Matt Davis and Ben Smith served as pallbearers.
