Chelsey Gipson ended her 2020-21 college basketball season with a shooting display reminiscent of her days at Palisades High when she was one of the top-three point makers in the nation. The senior at Loyola Marymount University powered the Lions to the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference Championships in Las Vegas as the team won two games before being eliminated by Santa Clara, 83-68, last Saturday.
It was the first time since 2003 that LMU won its first two games at the WCC Championships and Gipson tied for the tournament record in three-pointers made with eight. Gipson scored 15 points and added two assists in the season finale. LMU finished 7-19 overall and 4-13 in conference play, but the Lions will return everyone on the roster, Gipson included.
At the time of her graduation in 2017, Gipson was the only prep player in California to win three CIF Open Division I titles. She was ranked No. 53 by ESPN Hoopgurlz in 2015-17 when she won the Post Cup Award as the outstanding senior athlete at Pali High. She led Windward School to an upset over then-No. 1 Mater Dei in the first Southern Section Open Division final as a freshman before transferring to Palisades.
