Gallery 169 will open an exhibit by local artist Judi Jensen, entitled ‘The Berlin Wall,’ with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, at 169 W. Channel Rd. in Santa Monica Canyon. Jensen went to West Berlin after graduating from UCLA in 1985. ‘The city was like an island, so totally different from the Santa Monica Canyon area where I had lived since 1968,’ Jensen says. ‘ In Berlin, everything stopped at the end of the street. In Santa Monica, the ocean at the end of the street presented chances, hope for the future.’ Her Berlin apartment was only six blocks from the wall. Jensen, who had majored in art at Santa Monica College, created 83 pen-and-ink drawings, working in the streets to detail each end point where the cities of East and West Berlin were divided by the wall. Moving from the street to her studio, she continued with a second series of colored oil pastel and ink works. Jensen’s art was widely exhibited in West Berlin, where she stayed until 1990. About 100 of her drawings will be on display at Gallery 169 until October 29. Contact: Frank Langen, (310) 963-3891.
