Life moves pretty fast in the National Football League and nobody knows that better than former Highlands resident Kai Forbath. Competition is always fierce and the veteran placekicker is in a heated battle for the starting job with the Minnesota Vikings.
In November, Forbath signed a one-year, $760,000 contract with the Vikings and was a perfect 15-for-15 in place of Blair Walsh. He worked out back home in Southern California in the offseason, trying to increase his yardage on kickoffs, and now the former Lou Groza Award winner at UCLA is trying to beat out 24-year-old former Iowa Hawkeyes kicker Marshall Koehn at training camp.
Forbath, who turns 30 on Sept. 2, is with his third NFL team. He spent his first three seasons in Washington, then was traded to New Orleans during the 2015 season, played his last 10 games with the Saints. He played seven games for Minnesota last fall.
Forbath has made 84 of his 97 field goal attempts (with a career-long of 57 yards) and 135 of 141 extra points in 58 NFL games.
