A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) presents Art in the Afternoon: It’s All in Your Hands, the organization’s annual family-fun festival from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at the Venice Skills Center, 611 5th Ave. All proceeds benefit the organization’s shelter-based art programs for women and children survivors of domestic violence.
The event features the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Aquarium on Wheels, Color Me Mine ceramic painting, art workshops, a DJ, live and silent auctions, Disney celebrity autograph signing, Whole Foods, Hansen’s Cakes, Nitro Dreams Ice Cream, a bounce house and face painting.
A Window Between Worlds, founded by Palisadian Cathy Salser, is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the emotional wounds of domestic violence through art, says advisory board member Ninkey Dalton, also a Palisadian.
For children, witnessing domestic violence is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior to the next generation. Sixty-three percent of boys age 11 to 20 who commit murder kill the man who was abusing their mother (according to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and FBI Crime Statistics).
“Windows works with women, men and children who are coming from an abusive relationship to find their own voice through art, become self-confident and realize their own strength to work through their abuse,” Dalton says. “It’s a powerful service that has spread across the United States.”
A $1,000 grant from the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club has made it possible to have an Art for Healing group in Pacific Palisades. Those interested can e-mail Pam at artforhealing@awbw.org.
