Early in the second half of last Wednesday’s City girls soccer semifinal, Palisades High junior Sadie Stein boomed a direct free kick from 30 yards away towards the El Camino Real net. The ball had the goalkeeper beat but it sailed inches over the crossbar. Five minutes later Erin Lee scored off a corner kick to give the host Royals a 2-1 lead and they added an insurance goal seven minutes later en route to a 3-1 win.
“Sadie struck a great ball and I really believe if that goes in, we win,” Pali High Coach Christian Chambers said. “The girls gave it their all for the full 80 minutes.”
The Dolphins were energized by Cami Fishman’s tying goal just before the first half whistle blew.
“This gives us motivation to come back next year and beat them,” said sophomore forward Erica Hamilton, who ended the year with a team-best 15 goals.
Goalie Jacinda Hevesy-Rodriguez was tested in the first half, thwarting 11 El Camino Real corner kicks but the Dolphins (15-3) were unable to avenge a 2-0 nonleague loss Jan. 8.
ECR fell to West Valley League rival Cleveland 4-2 in the final.
