Will the high-waisted craze survive in 2017? What will the “it color” of spring be? What’s all this talk about exposed shoulders on the runways?
As a tumultuous year comes to a close and 2017 rears its head of unknowns, there’s solace in knowing that certain processes, like the ebb and flow of fashion, persist. Indulging the hyperpersonal politics of style can be an effective and immediate way of making a grander political or aesthetic statement. Or simply just a means to feel good and “be you.”
For our 2017 Style Guide, we’ve tapped Palisadian fashionistas Elyse Walker of the eponymous high-fashion store and Wendy Plumb of consignment store The Cottage—as well as our staff—to bring you informed predictions and “faves” for the new year.
Hang on to your Vivienne Westwood hat—it’s going to be an exhilarating peak into near-future fashion.

Q&A with Elyse Walker
PP: What are the top five trends you see on the horizon for 2017?
EW: Metallics, embroidery, chokers, velvets, South American designer influence
PP: What are five 2016 trends you think will be retired in the new year?
EW: Shredded denim is slowing down, now it’s more about patchwork. Low-rise is slowing down, while high-rise is up. The boho vibe is slowing down and embellished, off-the-shoulder silhouettes are moving in. And, finally, store your big bags because small bags are in!
PP: Specifically, what colors will be big in 2017?
EW: For the first half of 2017, we are seeing a lot of white and cream, shades of pink, charcoals and black. Gingham on the rise, while stripes are still going strong (ex: Johanna Ortiz top).
PP: What materials and textures?
EW: Crushed velvet, poplin stripes, metallic leathers, denim embroidery/patchwork
PP: What body part(s) do you think will
accentuated?
EW: Shoulders
PP: Who are your favorite designers right now?
EW: Johanna Ortiz, MONSE
PP: Any up-and-comers you think will explode in 2017?
EW: Caroline Constance, Miriam Nassar shoes
PP: Are there any specifically Palisadian trends? If so, what are they?
EW: Because we are in a warm and friendly, family-oriented community, the clientele has a similar outlook. You can find her in a great pair of denim and a chic cashmere sweater, like the Blondie, Robertson or Varsity by ThePerfext.
PP: What do you predict will be big specifically in the Palisades in 2017?
EW: Gucci slides, Mother denim, and Fendi handbags, Spinelli Kilcollin rings, Piper chokers and a Hermes watch.
PP: If you had to describe Palisadian
fashion in three words, what would
they be?
EW: Casual by day, laid-back-chic at night and skinny jeans, blazer with a high heel. Effortless, never trying too hard, chicly understated.
PP: What clothing piece and/or accessory do you think is a must-have for this holiday season?
EW: Anything red—Red McQueen suit, Alexis red lace jumpsuit, Gianvito Rossi Porto frayed shoe.
PP: What is your current fave item in your closet?
EW: A pair of polka dot Saint Laurent platform shoes.
PP: How does your personal style influence what you offer in the store?
EW: I always like mixing styles and designers and giving my customers the confidence to do the same. With that in mind, our store carries a diverse mix of over 250 vendors. Our in-store stylists are pros at putting together looks incorporating casual, contemporary and designer.
