There were several reasons for first-year St. Matthew’s coach Josh Osswald to be happy about his players’ performances in the Pacific Basin League Co-Ed Tennis Championships last Saturday at Brentwood School. One was the steadiness of singles players Will Winbach and Sophie Globe, each of whom advanced to the semifinals.
Winbach, an 8th-grader who was seeded third in the tournament and posted a 5-1 regular season record, won his first-round match 6-0 against Crossroads, won his quarterfinal match against Windward 6-4 and lost a tough 7-5 set against Crossroads in the semifinals.
Globe, only a 6th-grader, was seeded fourth overall after also going 5-1 in league play. She took her firs-round match 6-0 against a player from Archer School for Girls, then rallied from 5-1 down to beat an 8th-grade boy from Windward 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

The Falcons’ top doubles team of 6th-grader Geoffrey Belden and 7th-grader Chloe Donovan beat Windward 6-1 in the first round and beat a Crossroads duo 6-4 in the quarterfinals before faling 6-1 to another Crossroads pair. The No. 2 St. Matthew’s duo, 7th-grader Catherine Jones and 6th-grader Kate Harrington, lost its opener 6-2 to Crossroads.
The PBL team playoffs started Monday and St. Matthew’s hosted Wildwood at Rustic Canyon Recreation Center.
