Down to Earth at Canyon

Canyon Elementary celebrated Earth Day by creating a Shady Native Plant Habitat.
Children, teachers and parents teamed with biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to create a unique habitat under the tree canopy in the center of the school by planting over 200 native plants, including the beautiful and rare Stream Orchid. Parents, Lisa Onodera-Spence and Beth Preminger, led the school-wide effort.
This project was made possible by a generous grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and supported by generous grants from the Pacific Palisades Garden Club.
All of these native plant habitats are teaching sites as well as demonstration gardens for the many beautiful and sustainable native plants available to local gardeners.
By creating these habitats, Canyon School and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service aim to create a deep sense of stewardship of the natural world in Canyon students and their community.
