Dear Vany,
I’m thinking about being part of an upcoming school play but I am nervous.
How do you get over your nerves?
—Scared
Dear Scared,
I love this question! Even though I’m a Musical Theatre lover myself, I’ve definitely dealt with stage-nerves and they are a super common emotion.
I recommend looking at your part in the bigger picture. You have a whole cast of others supporting you on and off stage. Shows are so so so fun and an amazing experience. Don’t let nerves hold you back!
If you’re worried about being onstage, maybe ask your director for a part with less lines for this show and then next year go out for a bigger part. Start working on some breathing exercises for when you’re backstage during the performance.
Just know that this is NOT impossible. You can do this with ease and when you do I’m sure you will absolutely crush it.
Go For It!

Dear Vany,
My mom’s birthday is coming up soon and I don’t know what to get her! What are some ideas of nice gifts? I like art, so I was hoping to make her something.
—Stumped Daughter
Dear Stumped Daughter,
Gift ideas can be really hard to think of! I think writing a poem and printing it onto a phone case or mug for your mom is a really cute idea. I also love making things out of clay and painting them to give as gifts.
If you’re into origami, you could make an important animal or symbol in your mom’s life and give it to her like that, or write a note on it. You could make her a necklace with wire and crystals, or even just draw her a picture of you and your family.
I hope your mom has a very happy birthday!
Good Luck!
—Vany
