David S. Manning, a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away after a long illness at home on March 16. He was 93. Born on the Fourth of July 1918 in New York City, David was the first of three children born to Jenny and Alexander Moskowitz. He grew up in New York City, graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. During World War II, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. David then headed west, working his way through college and graduating from Arizona State University. He later became both a Mason and a Shriner. David had a colorful career that included stints in agriculture (he was an expert in melons), hospital administration and retail clothing. Ultimately, he owned two successful dress shops, named M’Ladye Fashions, for nearly 40 years: one in Los Angeles on Beverly Boulevard, the other in Tarzana. His longtime customers appreciated his eye for detail and quality, and also enjoyed the warmth and sense of humor of his top sales associate, wife Leah. David moved to the Marquez Knolls neighborhood in 1977 when he married Leah, also a former New Yorker, who had lived here since the late 1960’s. Though their business was in Los Angeles and the Valley, and though they had many opportunities to move, they could never bring themselves to leave the beautiful climate and close-knit community. Since David was born on July 4, the family’s running joke was that it was amazing that Pacific Palisades threw such a large party for him every year, complete with a parade in his honor and fireworks! He enjoyed celebrating this special day in the Palisades year after year. David was an avid gardener, enjoyed studying and investing in the stock market, and enjoyed reading about health and wellness. While he worked hard to achieve professional success, nothing was more important to David than his family. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Leah; stepson and daughter-in-law Michael and Suzanne Goldstein; and the lights of his life, grandchildren Natalie, Alex and Nicholas Goldstein. He is also survived by sister-in-law Barbara Manning, brother-in-law Don Newman, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brother Edwin and sister Audrey. David’s funeral and interment took place at Long Island, New York, on March 20. Friends and family in the Los Angeles area will gather for a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1 at the Palisades Highlands home of Michael and Suzanne Goldstein (for details, e-mail suzanne@wishcharter.org). In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to WISH Charter Elementary School (www.wishcharter.org), a nonprofit school serving children with special needs, including David’s grandson Alex, who is autistic, or Kehillat Israel (www.kehillatisrael.org).
