The Diane Davisson Dancers present “Stop Time: A Song and Dance SpecTAPular” on June 1 and 2 at the Morgan Wixson Theater, 2627 Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica.
“While ‘Stop Time’ celebrates classic American music, thematically the show is about living in the moment and exploring creative instincts that are with us since childhood,” Artistic Director/Choreographer Davisson says. “Company members will share personal, dance-related stories with the audience, revealing early experiences that led them to shuffle onstage as adults. I want people to leave the show eager to dance or pursue whatever creative activity they have always imagined—and not to allow technology to steal so much of their time. I’ve even sprinkled ringtones and voicemail greetings between numbers to suggest that we often miss what is going on around us because our heads are buried in our cell phones.”
Guest stars include world-renowned dancer-choreographers Jordi Caballero (“Dancing with the Stars”), Zita Gonzalez (Broadway’s “Forever Tango”) and Gonzalez’s daughter Giovanna Dan (Ballet Folklorico Juvenil AALA), who will turn up the heat with classic Argentine tangos.
The spirited show opens with Scott Joplin’s “Stop-Time Rag,” and features full-company tap renditions of “Anything Goes,” “Stomping at the Savoy” and “Night and Day.”
In addition to mounting shows for her tap company, Davisson has starred in theatrical productions including “Stepping Out” and “Anything Goes.” The Diane Davisson Dancers have toured coast-to-coast and in Brazil. Members are in their 30s through 70s, and include a college statistician, accountant, nurse, voiceover artist, teacher and real estate agent.
Performances are at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. For tickets ($20), call (310) 474-1639.
