As part of its community service outreach, the Pacific Palisades Optimist Club is offering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) classes throughout 2013. The next one will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the Aldersgate Retreat Center.
Spring De Haviland, who was in the Coast Guard for 30 years and is a certified CPR and first aid instructor, is teaching the course.
According to Optimist member Bill Skinner, a CPR class at the Red Cross normally costs $75 to $105 and non-Red Cross classes cost $45 to $50, but this class is $10.
At the beginning of the year, the Optimists set a goal of training 150 people in the Palisades in CPR. After two classes, 75 have been trained.
“One of the biggest obstacles in cardiac arrest is inaction,” said Optimist president Stu Kaiser. “Seventy-five percent of cardiac arrests take place in the home and we feel this training will prove helpful.”
The course will cover CPR, AED (automatic external defibrillator) and the Heimlich maneuver to help someone who is choking. The certification is good for two years. Contact: Bill Skinner at (310) 459-8286.
