The Rustic Canyon Park Advisory Board will hold a Rustic Night Party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Saturday, June 1 to benefit improvements at the recreation center, 601 Latimer Rd.
All proceeds from the cocktail and buffet event will help pay for the renovation of three tennis courts ($18,000) at the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center. Other future projects include refinishing the basketball court ($30,000), modernizing the theater lighting and electrical grid, and continuing to enhance the historic eucalyptus grove, said Steve Slavkin, president of the Park Advisory Board.
During the party, the board will also honor longtime park supporters George Wolfberg, Randy Young and Randy’s mother, the late Betty Lou Young. Over the years, the Youngs have dedicated time, money and physical effort to improve the park and renovate the historic grove, Slavkin said.
“More than 20 hard-working and creative people helped plan this event, and the team has been led by Veslemoey Zwart, a tireless cheerleader, volunteer and fundraiser for Rustic Canyon Park,” Slavkin said.
The evening festivities will feature a cocktail party atmosphere, where guests will be able to enjoy drinks and a delicious buffet provided by Elisabet Spaulding, Tara Amiel and Chris Lombardi, and desserts by Scarlett’s Cupcakes. This party will also showcase live music by Doug Suisman and Jill Hobert, and performances by Mike Dignum and DJ Digs.
“One of the night’s highlights will be the world premiere presentation of our signature Rustic Night Cocktail, a unique drink made with quality Blackwell Rum,” Slavkin said. “Using a top secret recipe, this drink will be offered at this special event only.”
The park is vital to the Santa Monica Canyon neighborhood and provides a special place to enjoy all sorts of recreational activities including tennis, swimming and basketball, Slavkin said. The recreation center also provides a great “venue for picnics, classes and theater programs, while the recently beautified Grove allows guests to wander and admire the towering eucalyptus trees.”
Efforts to improve the tennis courts have been ongoing for the past two years, Slavkin added.
“Through Movies in the Park, speed-tennis tournaments and private donations, we have successfully worked hard to raise money to transform three of six courts to date. The renovations have jump-started our youth and adult tennis teaching programs which now have record level enrollments.”
