Last Friday, 50 elementary school children from the Las Familias Del Pueblo program visited St. Matthew’s Parish School for a summer picnic and a day filled with outdoor activities. After a pizza lunch, the children enjoyed soccer, a slip and slide, yoga, and swim
ming.
“This day is amazing for the children, especially the swimming,” after-school director Anna Sanchez said. “All of their parents work long hours in sweatshops downtown and they don’t have the opportunity to take them to pools.”
The second annual Las Familias Day was sponsored by the St. Matthew’s Thrift Shop. It was sometimes hard to tell who had more fun: the kids or the volunteers who made the day happen.
Former Palisades High volleyball player Molly Kornfeind, now a senior at Dartmouth, said: “When I got up this morning I was so tired, but once I got here I had lots of energy because I love these kids.”
Las Familias is one of the ten non-profit agencies that the Thrift Shop helps support with the proceeds from its store. The Thrift Shop is planning to invite the children back for a hiking day later in the year.
