Los Angeles and Scottsdale based artist Michael Gorman is slated to present his latest series “Tour de Force” at Bruce Lurie Gallery in Pacific Palisades on Sunday, March 5.
Gorman is a mixed media artist whose background as a cryptologist in the US Navy and as a set designer for major motion pictures led him to an “exuberant” career creating art. He is a three-time recipient of the Presidential Seal of Approval for Artist of the Year.
“Gorman uses vibrant colors and iconic images to create riveting works that fuse unexpected, abstract elements with masterful and unusual forms,” according to the gallery. “Filled with a sense of motion, exuding a whirling energy, these images use fresh and contrasting layered colors in paintings ripe with gestural qualities.
“The artist describes his work as a ‘voyeuristic’ experience, in which the viewer peers at the canvas as if through a window, allowing a unique and personal view of recognizable subjects.”
Recurring subjects in Gorman’s works are ballerinas, gunslinger cowboys and the Statue of Liberty. His works are bold in shape and color.
“Working primarily in mixed media, Gorman often combines bright, electric colors with earth tones and more muted shades,” according to Bruce Lurie Gallery. “He uses foil, alcohol-based paints, resin and a variety of almost alchemic techniques.”
Most works in this new exhibition are large-in-scale, ranging from 72×60 to 6×48.
“Introducing new elements and new approaches to the classic subjects that intrigue him, Gorman recreates a world we think we understand and invites us to take a new, deeper, dreamier and unconventional view,” the gallery shared. “His latest works offer a powerful message of emotion in motion, purpose through voyeuristic dreamscape.”
The solo show will be on view from March 5 through March 29 at Bruce Lurie Gallery, located at 873 Via de la Paz.
