If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate the long weekend this Labor Day, The Broad Stage, established by Palisadian opera singer Dale Franzen, is hosting Broad Fest on Sunday, Sept. 2, from 2 to 7 p.m.
This year’s festivities include music and dance, activities for kids and adults, snacks, sweets and other food available for purchase.
KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez, voted Best DJ in LA by the LA Weekly Readers Poll in 2016, will play sets between performances by Afro-Caribbean funk band Jungle Fire—all presented with the support of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl.
Element Band & Ara Babandjian will perform contemporary Armenian tunes, and the Los Angeles-based, all-female percussion and vocal group Adaawe will blend African, R&B, jazz, Latin and reggae.

After an interactive drum circle led by Anindo Marshall and Adaawe, the 100-seat black box theater Edye Second Space will feature an assortment of family-friendly films from Hollywood Shorts.
SMC Global Motion dancers, led by faculty member Bernard Keali’l Ceballos, will also perform throughout the day.
Hit + Run Live Screen Printing will return to this year’s fest and offer original T-shirt designs. Art-making booths will be hosted by Crayon Collection (founded by Palisadian Sheila Morovati), the SMC Art Department and The Broad Stage Education & Community Programs.
The event, which is open to members and subscribers, local families, college students and art enthusiasts of all ages, is free to attend. Broad Fest takes place at The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, located at 1310 11th Street.
