A new era begins when Palisades High’s boys varsity basketball team tips off the season Monday at 8 p.m. against Santa Monica in the first round of pool play at the Santa Monica tournament.
Vejas Anaya makes his coaching debut for the Dolphins against a team that won the Southern Section Division 1A title and reached the state finals, defeating Palisades 76-53 in the second round of the state tournament.
“I know it’s a tough opponent, but we’re looking forward to our first game,” said Anaya, who is replacing James Paleno, winner of 416 games in 22 seasons. “I’m very excited and I’m looking forward to my first season.”
Anaya played at Palisades (Class of ‘97) and was Paleno’s assistant and the frosh-soph coach.
On Tuesday at 5 p.m. the Dolphins play Harvard-Westlake, which lost to Bishop Montgomery in the quarterfinals of the SS-Division 4AA playoffs.
