With African American Heritage Month quickly approaching, Palisadian art collectors Shirley and Bernard Kinsey will be presenting various parts of their extensive historical collection around Los Angeles and farther afield, culminating at the Epcot Center at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in March. The couple’s collection and accompanying book include original art, historical artifacts and other documents illustrating many overlooked and untold stories of African-American achievement and contributions. The schedule kicks off with the fourth annual ‘An Evening with Bernard and Shirley Kinsey,’ hosted by CBS Evening News anchor Pat Harvey at 7:30 p.m. on February 2 at the Ebony Repertory Theater at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center downtown. The evening will provide insight into the Kinseys’ 46-year partnership and passion for African-American history and culture. On February 8, Los Angeles City Hall will showcase select images from the collection in the over-bridge corridor. Sponsored by 10th District Councilman and Council President Herb Wesson, the exhibit will be on view until March. The three-museum tour of the Kinsey Collection begins at the San Francisco Museum of the African Diaspora on February 8, moves to the Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and ends at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore on May 19. A small exhibit, ‘African American Treasures,’ opens on February 16 at the Barrett Art Gallery in the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th St. The exhibit will be on display until March 9. The Kinseys will present an evening of ‘enlightenment and inspiration’ as they take audience members on a virtual tour of the objects in the Kinsey Collection at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28 at the Broad Stage at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center. The couple will offer many untold stories of African-American accomplishments and contributions to the world. A reception, book signing and personal tour of the Kinsey exhibit at the Barrett Art Gallery will follow directly after the presentation.
