The leading ladies of fifth- grade Junior Girl Scout Troop 6105 from Corpus Christi School are taking action to educate the community and protect the environment. On Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. they will be posted at the Palisades Branch Library to collect old batteries for recycling.
“We want to let people in the Palisades know that they can recycle their batteries at the library,” Keely Ford said. “They can’t go in the trash or regular soil because it is bad for the soil and bad to breath.”
The five troop members – Ford, Maia Heisel, Sofia Prestine, Denali Masi and Sydney Diaz – hope to collect 25 pounds of used batteries for proper disposal while earning their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.
While earning their gardening badge, the girls learned about toxic chemicals in soil and how batteries can dangerously contaminate the ground and the air if they are not properly disposed.
“A lot of people throw their old batteries in the trash and that is really bad for the environment,” Heisel said. “We want to help keep the earth clean.”
Types of batteries being accepted include AA, AAA, C and D cells; 9-volt; button batteries from watches and hearing aids; and rechargeable batteries of the same sizes.
The library will continue to accept old batteries for disposal during regular business hours. A battery collection bucket will remain near the information desk. Batteries can also be taken to Radio Shack, Best Buy, Target and the UCLA recycling center.
