Dr. Jonathan Foyle, chief executive of World Monuments Fund Britain, will be the guest speaker for Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club members and guests on Wednesday, May 22 at the clubhouse, 901 Haverford. Cocktails and light bites will be available at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:30 p.m.
Since 1965, the World Monuments Fund had been the leading independent organization devoted to saving the world’s most treasured places. Foyle will explore the cultural heritage of some of the world’s most significant historic sites and what makes them important and relevant to us today.
Trained as an architect and art historian, Foyle holds a doctorate in archaeology, specializing in early Renaissance architecture in Britain. He developed a practical knowledge of British historical monuments as an assistant surveyor of Canterbury Cathedral and then as buildings curator at Hampton Court Palace and Kew Palace.
Foyle’s architectural illustrations and reconstructions have been widely featured in broadcasts, exhibitions and publications, and his award-winning writing has been regularly published in The Sunday Times. He is the author of “Architecture of Canterbury Cathedral.” Foyle formerly taught a broad curriculum of cultural history for University of Cambridge International schools and he lectures widely from Britain to Australia.
Foyle is perhaps best known for presenting broadcasts on architectural topics, including BBC1s “The One Show,” BBC4s “Henry VIII: Patron and Plunderer” and the History Channel’s “Lost Worlds.”
