After being interested in a career involving writing for as long as I could remember, my sights were broadened to journalism at the beginning of sophomore year. From there, I wasted no time in involving myself through joining the Crossroads newspaper class and applying for summer internships.
Because I have lived in Pacific Palisades for the majority of my life, the Palisadian-Post seemed like the ideal publication to pursue. To my surprise, I was fortunate enough to score an internship for the duration of summer.
Throughout my internship, I did things like proofing sections of the newspaper set to come out the following Thursday and even writing articles of my own. The experience I gained through interviewing people via phone call and in person is incomparable to anything else I’ve done. To have had this opportunity, I believe that I gained much more confidence in these frightening situations.
Nearing the end of my time at the Post, I worked among the other staff at the 2018 Speaker Series featuring Father Gregory Boyle that took place at Corpus Christi across from the park.
The logistical work of cleaning up and ushering people in again allowed me to gain experience of what events may be like if I continued in journalism. Observing everyone’s specific roles and how they came together to create a wonderfully planned event set an incredible standard of teamwork and cooperation.
Above all, it’s safe to say that my time at the Post showed me that I truly do want to work within the realm of journalism as a career. Even though I have much more to learn and practice in order to create work I’m truly proud of, I’m extremely grateful for the foundation I built at the Post this summer.
