Alvin Feinberg (known as “Al”), who had lived in Pacific Palisades with his wife Mavis since 1965, passed away on August 7 at age 88.
Al served during World War II in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific. Afterward, he had his own insurance business before branching out into real estate, all centered in West Los Angeles.
Al and Mavis raised their four children, Irwin, Ron, Steve and Linda, in the Palisades and they all graduated from Palisades High. He was very active with his kids in Indian Guides and Cub Scouts, and regularly followed their exploits in academic, sports, musical and ballet events.
In addition to serving as treasurer of the Yetta Maizlish Chapter of the City of Hope for many years, Al was treasurer of the Cure FD Foundation, which he and Mavis established here in 2001.
Al’s favorite ways to enjoy life were to be with his family; to bike for long distances along the Coast Highway; to sail his boat, with family aboard, in the Marina and the ocean; and to read books about history and biographies of interesting, thoughtful people. He also found joy in his later years by creating art, using charcoal and watercolors. He volunteered as a tutor at Palisades Elementary for years, and enjoyed teaching third graders how to succeed at reading.
Al and Mavis had seven grandchildren, age 15 to 28. Family was always Al’s greatest treasure in life, and they were gathered around him to say their loving goodbyes.
All who knew Al loved him for his loving kindness toward all, for his good humor, for his courage in the face of his last 23 years of serious health problems, and for the way he had of making everyone feel special and appreciated.
He will be greatly missed by those who were lucky enough to know him.
